Chapter 1

Frankle was dying, and no one worthy had come to take his cane. He knew it the way he knew rain, deep in his crooked bones. The cane looked like plain wood, but inside it held everything he had spent his life protecting. He needed to hand it to a good heir before his heart quit. That morning he found tobacco ash on his doorstep that he had not dropped. Someone had watched the old house all night. He crouched behind a broken fence at the edge of the trees and waited. A boy played alone in the clearing below. The kid built a little kingdom from sticks and stones, talking to soldiers only he could see. He never once looked up. He never once had anyone to look up for. Frankle watched him and felt a strange pull. Maybe. Maybe this lonely child could carry the weight. But Frankle could not go down there. The watcher was still near. He felt eyes on his back the whole time, patient and cold. If he approached the boy now, he would lead the hunter straight to the one thing that mattered. So he stayed hidden, hands tight on the cane, and let the chance slip past. The cold came fast then. It bit through his coat and settled in his chest like wet stone. His breath turned to smoke. His fingers went stiff on the cane's handle. Frankle had lived through many hard winters, but this cold felt wrong. It carried a smell like turned earth and old rot. Every instinct he had left screamed one word. Run. He pushed off the fence and hobbled toward the house tucked under the hill. His cane struck the dirt hard with each step. Behind him a gray fog rolled out of the trees, low and drifting, blurring the clearing where the boy had played. The boy was already gone. Good. Frankle reached the sagging door, dragged it shut, and threw the rusted bolt. Through a broken window he watched the fog reach the yard. It was not weather. Inside the pale haze a darker shape moved, a shadow with no body, thick as spilled ink. It slid over the grass toward his door. The old boards groaned. Frankle backed into the far corner and raised the cane like a weapon. A soft weight landed on the windowsill. An owl, round and small, its eyes catching light like two bright coins. It stared straight at him, not at the shadow. Then it clicked its beak twice and did not fly. The shadow stopped at the doorstep. It did not come in. Frankle stood in the ruin, chest heaving, and understood two things at once. The watcher trailing him was not a man. And the boy in the clearing was no longer just a maybe. Whatever this shadow wanted, it had found his trail. Now he had to reach the child before it did.
