Hailey wanted the best hair salon in town. On her first morning open, four empty chairs faced her mirror, and no one came. She had painted the sign herself. She had polished every finish until it shone. She had dreamed of this shop for years. Now the clock on her wall ticked past noon, and the little bell over her door had not rung once. She stood in the window and watched people pass. A woman with grocery bags looked in, then kept walking. Two men crossed the street to avoid her stare. Hailey pressed her palm to the glass. Nobody in this town knew her name. Her chairs would stay empty until they did. She untied her apron and made a decision. If the town would not come to her, she would go to the town. Hailey filled a bag with scissors, a comb, and a spray bottle. She walked to the small home for older folks near the edge of Main Street. Inside, she found a common room with a television nobody watched. A dozen residents sat in chairs, hair grown long and untidy. A staff worker told her the visiting barber had quit two months ago. "I'm Hailey," she said. "I just opened the salon down the road. Free cuts today. Who's first?" An old woman with tangled white hair raised her hand. Hailey draped a towel over her shoulders and got to work. She trimmed slow and careful. She asked about the woman's late husband and her garden. Around her, the other residents leaned in to watch and talk. Hailey worked for three hours. She cut ten heads of hair. She learned ten names and told each of them hers. She wiped down her scissors between cuts and swept the floor when she finished. When the last man touched his fresh part in a hand mirror, he smiled and grabbed her wrist. "You come back now," he said. "And I'm telling my daughter about you. She runs the diner." The old woman with white hair pressed a folded paper into Hailey's hand. On it she had written six names and phone numbers. "My friends," she said. "They all need a good cut. Tell them Franny sent you." Hailey walked home with the list in her pocket. That evening her phone rang. A woman booked a color for Saturday. She said Franny Granny had told her the salon was worth the trip. Then the phone rang again. By the time Hailey locked her door, she had five appointments on her calendar. Her chairs would not sit empty tomorrow. But five names in one day meant one thing she had not planned for. Saturday she was alone, with one pair of hands and five heads of hair waiting. She could not cut them all herself.
