Chapter 1

Hank Pym pressed the last drop of solution into the vial and watched it glow. The particles were done. He had chased this for two years, and now they sat in his palm, small enough to shrink a man to the size of an ant. He wanted them perfect. But perfect meant more testing, and every test on himself left him sick, his joints aching for days after. He held the vial to the light and made himself a promise. One more round of measurements. Then he would understand exactly what the suit did to the body inside it. The lab door opened without a knock. Nick Fury stepped in wearing a long black coat, one eye covered by a patch. He did not look at the equipment. He looked at Hank. "You made it work," Fury said. "It works. It isn't safe yet." "Safe isn't why I paid you." Fury crossed to the table and picked up the suit's helmet. He turned it once and set it down. "I need soldiers who can do things other soldiers can't. You built the first one. Tonight you use it." Hank stood. "Use it where?" "A.I.M. has a lab across the river. Weapons that shouldn't exist. I want them shut down before someone smarter than me buys them." Fury's voice stayed flat. "You go small. You get inside. You open the door." "I haven't finished the human trials. I don't know the limit." "Then you'll find it tonight." Hank looked at the vial in his hand. He thought of Janet, asleep across town, who begged him to stop shrinking until he knew the cost. He thought of the ache that never fully left his knees anymore. Fury waited, patient, a man who had already decided. "If I say no?" "Then the particles belong to me anyway, and I hand them to someone who won't ask questions." Fury let that sit. "I'd rather it be the man who built them." Hank put on the suit. Hours later he stood ant-sized on a cold steel floor inside the A.I.M. lab. Guards moved above him like walking towers. His heart hammered against the shrunken cage of his ribs. He ran along a wire, climbed a control panel, and forced the outer door lock. It clicked. Fury's team poured in behind gunfire and shouting. Hank grew back to full size behind a crate and dropped to one knee. His vision swam. His hands shook so hard he could barely close them. He had held the small state too long, and his body screamed about it. He had proven the particles worked in the field. He had also proven they could kill him faster than he thought. Fury found him against the crate, pale and gasping. "You opened the door," Fury said. "Good." He crouched, studying Hank's shaking hands. "There's more work. And now I know what you can do." Hank understood then. The particles weren't his anymore. They were Fury's plan.
