Chapter 1

Hayley Orienta found the pup at the foot of the totem, alive and shaking. The carved wolf rose three times her height above the clearing, wrapped in old rope and hung with oak swings the pups used in summer. No pup should have been here at dawn alone. She picked it up. Its fur was wet at the shoulder, and the wet was blood, but not the pup's. She knew what that meant before she turned around. Something bigger had carried it and dropped it. Something had been close enough to the totem to leave a trail. The totem was where the pack proved itself. Three years ago she had broken up a fight under it and put two grown males on the ground. The pack had looked at her differently after. She had been climbing toward leading them ever since, one clean act at a time, careful never to step at the leader directly. Exile waited for anyone who moved wrong. The iron gate at the edge of the territory stood open. Chains hung loose on the bars. Hayley set the pup down behind the totem's base and told it to stay. Then she followed the blood through the trees and found the Kodiak forty paces past the gate, standing over a fresh kill from the pack's stores. It was the largest bear she had ever seen. It saw her and rose. She had a choice. Run back and wake the leader, who would bring six wolves and end it cleanly and keep the credit. Or close the gate behind her, alone, and end it herself where the pack would find the body at sunrise. The first kept her safe. The second was the kind of act the pack counted. She thought of the pup behind the totem. She shut the gate. The fight was short and ugly. The bear broke two of her ribs against a tree before she got under its jaw. She worked the knife twice and then a third time and rolled clear as it dropped. She lay in the dirt and listened to her own breathing for a long minute. Then she stood, dragged the carcass back through the gate by its foreleg, and left it at the foot of the totem next to the pup, who had not moved. By the time the pack came down at first light, the bear was cooling in plain sight and Hayley was sitting against the totem with the pup in her lap. The leader arrived last. He looked at the bear, then at her, then at the wolves around them who were already looking at her the way they had looked three years ago. He said nothing. He did not have to. She had not challenged him. She had made it so the pack would, the next time she gave them a reason.
