Hazel Acorn stood at the edge of the burrow she had never walked beyond, gripping her thorn sword and swearing she would reach the ruined burrow by nightfall. Her ancestors had fallen there. Their blade still waited in the dark, and she meant to carry it home. The trouble was simple and awful: she had no idea which way to go. The undergrowth spread in every direction, endless and green, and all of it looked the same. "Easy," she told herself. "A great adventurer always knows the way." She did not know the way. She pulled a worn map from inside her patched cloak and unrolled it across a flat stone. The map had belonged to her family for longer than anyone could count. Its markings had softened to pale brown ghosts. She traced a line with one claw and found nothing she recognized. No path. No arrow. No helpful mark reading START HERE. Just faded hills and a river that could have been anywhere. Hazel chose a direction and marched. She crossed a root, squeezed under a fern, and climbed a mound of damp soil. An hour later she climbed the same mound again. The same bent fern. The same root. She had walked in a circle. Her boast had carried her nowhere. She sat down hard and nearly cried. Then she noticed the light. Ahead, past a curtain of moss, a soft blue glow spilled across the ground. Hazel crept toward it, sword raised. A cluster of cave mushrooms grew from the dark mouth of a hollow. Their caps shed a cool, dripping light, enough to read by. And in that light, the map changed. Lines she had never seen rose out of the old paper. Faint silver marks glowed where the glow touched them, hidden until now. A trail. A river crossing. And at the end, a small drawn ruin with a tiny blade inked beside it. "Secret ink," Hazel whispered. "You clever old thing." The map only woke under this strange light. She broke off a single glowing cap and tucked it beside the paper. The silver trail held, bright and clear. Now she could see where to go. The hidden path led down, into the hollow behind the mushrooms, deeper than she had ever gone. The silver line did not wind gently through the undergrowth. It plunged straight underground, through tunnels and dark she could not see the end of. Hazel looked back once at the open green world above. Then she looked at the map, at the tiny ruined burrow waiting at the trail's end. She tightened her helmet, lifted her glowing cap like a lantern, and stepped into the dark mouth of the hollow. She knew the way now. The way led straight down, and she would have to follow it alone.

The tunnel narrowed, and Hazel held her glowing cap higher. The silver trail on her map pointed straight ahead. But the way was blocked. A line of leaf-cutter ants marched across the tunnel, each one hauling a green leaf twice its size. They moved shoulder to shoulder, nose to tail, an endless living wall. Hazel pressed forward and shoved. The ant did not budge. She bounced off it and landed on her tail. "I am Hazel Acorn," she announced, climbing up. "Make way for a great adventurer." The ants ignored her. She drew her thorn sword and poked the nearest one. It clamped its jaws shut with a snap that made her jump back. Hazel was too small to break the line and too proud to turn around. She studied the ants. Each one carried a leaf. Each leaf was far bigger than the ant beneath it. An idea landed. If she could not go through them, she would go with them. Nearby grew a patch of soft green leaves. Hazel cut one free and dragged it over her head like a roof. She crept to the trail and slipped into a gap in the line. The ants did not stop. They did not look. She was just another worker hauling a leaf home. Hazel marched with them, hidden under her green shield, her heart hammering. The trail curved and dipped. Then the ants turned down a side passage, and Hazel's map pointed the other way. She tossed off her leaf and ducked out of the line. Ahead, warm light spilled from a wide chamber. She hurried toward it, glad to be past the ants at last. The light came from an acorn-shaped cart parked in the middle of the chamber. Its shutters hung open. Jars and bundles crowded its little shelves. Beside it sat a tall oak chest, bound in iron, its handle worn smooth. A figure leaned on the counter, half in shadow, watching her come. "Lost, little one?" the merchant said. "Everyone who comes this deep is lost, or looking for something they shouldn't." The voice was dry and amused. "I sell both maps and silence. Which do you need?" Hazel stopped. She gripped her sword, then let her paw drop. She was tired, she was deep underground, and this was the first face she had seen in the dark. "I need the way to the ruined burrow," she said. "I'm after a blade that belongs to my family." The merchant's eyes flicked to the iron-bound chest, then back to her. A slow smile. "The ruined burrow. Yes. I can point you there." The merchant tapped the chest's worn handle. "But everything down here has a price, Hazel Acorn. And I wonder what a mouse your size could possibly pay." Hazel had cleared the ants. Now she faced a harder gate, and this one wanted paying.

Hazel looked from the merchant's smile to the iron-bound chest beside the acorn cart. The merchant wanted payment, and she had nothing a trader would want. She squared her shoulders. "I'll earn my way," she said. "Name a task. I'm braver than I look." The merchant laughed. "Brave words. But the way to the ruined burrow isn't a thing I give. It's a thing you read." A paw tapped the worn oak chest. "I keep the last true map of these deep tunnels in here. The lock turns only for a coin I doubt you carry." Hazel pulled her own map from her cloak and spread it on the counter. The silver trail she had followed ran across the paper, then faded to nothing in the middle. "My map stops here," she said. "That's why I need yours." The merchant leaned close. "Then we understand each other. No coin, no lock, no map." A shutter creaked shut on the cart. The deal was done, and Hazel had lost. She stepped back, stung. Her eyes caught the mushrooms growing along the chamber wall. Their caps glowed soft blue, the same light that had woken the silver on her map in the tunnels above. She remembered the lesson. This glow showed what hid in the dark. Hazel grabbed her map and carried it to the cluster. She held the faded paper under the glowing caps. New lines bled up through the old ones. Thin silver marks curled past the spot where her trail had died. The path did not end. It had only been waiting for the light. "The glow," Hazel breathed. "It's all still here." She traced the fresh line with her claw. It bent left, dropped, then ran straight toward a small drawn ruin at the paper's edge. The ruined burrow. Her ancestors' fallen home. The merchant's smile dropped. "That map is older than it looks," the trader said, quieter now. "You carry the whole road and never knew it." Hazel rolled the map tight and tucked it away. "I don't need your chest," she said. "I don't need your coin. Keep your silence too." She drew her thorn sword and pointed it down the passage the fresh line showed. She marched out of the warm chamber and into the dark alone. Behind her, the glow of the cart dimmed and was gone. The air turned colder. The floor sloped down, steeper than before, and the walls pressed close. Hazel held her glowing cap high and followed the silver. The new path led where no merchant would walk for free. Soon the tunnel opened wide, and the floor fell away into a black clearing. Loose stones scattered under her feet. The ground ahead was gone, dropping into a pit too wide to jump and too deep to see. The map's line ran straight across it, to the far side she could not reach.
