Chapter 1

Honey Trappins stood in the middle of the perfumer's shop with three weeks until her wedding and nothing on her wrist that smelled like her. The autumn court had already mailed the invitations. The vows were sealed in her pocket. But every court wedding she had ever attended smelled the same — clove, smoke, dried apple — and she refused to drift through her own ceremony as one more guest in a long line of forgotten brides. She had commissioned the workshop herself. Warm wood walls. Skylights rimed with frost. Shelves of bottles in every color, lit from above. She had paid for it with the last of her own coin so no one in the autumn court could later say the scent had been a gift, or a loan, or a favor she owed. She wanted one thing in this marriage that belonged to her before it belonged to them. The perfumer arrived first, red hair down her back, blue gown sweeping the floorboards. Purda Blue had made scents for three royal weddings and quit each one halfway through. She set a tray of glass strips on the counter and said, "Tell me what you want people to remember." Honey said, "Me. Not the court. Me." Purda nodded once and uncapped the first strip. Clove. Honey shook her head. Smoke. She shook her head again. Dried apple. "No," Honey said. "That is every wedding I have already sat through." The door opened and a small blue-haired fairy slipped in, barefoot, carrying a wooden hive under one arm. Nypslyp kept bees in the high meadow above the vale, where the snowblossoms bloomed late and the frost never killed them. She set the hive on the counter. The honeycomb inside glowed soft gold through the carved openings. "My bees only work the snowblossom," Nypslyp said. "Nobody else has this. Nobody else can copy it." Honey leaned in and breathed. It was sweet and cold at once — sugar and snow and something green underneath. Purda lifted a comb, pressed the wax, and caught three drops of pale honey in a dish. She blended it with a thread of warm amber and a single drop of pear. She handed Honey a fresh strip. Honey touched it to her wrist and waited. The scent opened slow. Sweet first, then cold, then a low warmth that stayed. She thought of the prince laughing at spilled wine. She thought of the vows folded against her ribs. She did not cry, but her hands shook. Purda poured the finished blend into a white ceramic jar painted with pink and blue flowers and pressed the lid tight. "Enough for the day," she said. "Not a drop more, ever." Honey carried the jar out into the cold street, one jar, one scent, hers. Then she remembered the bridesmaids still had no gowns, and the autumn queen had asked to approve the guest list by morning.
