Ivy waded into the shallows before dawn, her lantern low, her group asleep on the bank behind her. She had guided many through the blackwater, but tonight she wanted something more than safe passage. She wanted peace with the things that lived here — the creatures who fled her boots and watched her from the reeds. She knelt in the mud and planted a wooden pole. From it hung a torn white flag, soft and pale as fog. It was the oldest signal she knew. No weapon. No hunt. At the flag's base she set a shallow clay basin and filled it with clean water. A small gift. A place to drink without fear. She waited. The marsh held its breath. Then, between two cattails, she saw what she had missed before — flattened reeds in neat rows, a ring of pressed grass, small scratched marks on a stone. The creatures had been studying her for a long time, mapping her crossings the way she mapped theirs. A bright shape stepped from the mist. A tall bird with a ribboned tail of blue and violet lowered its head and drank from the basin. Behind it, low shapes shifted near the broken stone walls of an old tower deeper in the fen — a place she had never dared approach. Eyes inside the slit windows watched her, and did not run. Ivy let out a slow breath. The quiet she always listened for came, clean and full. The flag moved once in the wind. She had been seen, and not struck. The crossing between her kind and theirs had begun.
