Chapter 1

Janet Van Dyne shrank to the size of a coin and slipped under the warehouse door, and no one heard her coming. That was the point. People named other heroes first. She wanted to be the one who ended the fight nobody else could. Tonight she meant to prove it. Her yellow suit was Hank's work. He had built it in the same lab where he built his own. Now she flew through the dark, small and fast, hunting the thing tearing the city apart. The thing was the Hulk. He stood two stories tall, green and roaring, throwing a truck through a wall. Janet had fought at Hank's side for months. She had never faced anything like this. Someone had made the Hulk this angry on purpose. She just didn't know who yet. A red and gold figure dropped from the sky. Iron Man. "You the bug?" Tony Stark called. "I hoped for backup with more mass." "Watch me," Janet said. She grew to full size, fired a bio-electric sting into the Hulk's shoulder, then shrank again before his fist closed on empty air. Hank landed near Stark, red suit scarred from the last hit. "Jan, don't get close. He learns." His voice stayed flat, but his eyes tracked her every move. "I know how he moves," she said. "Trust me." A blond man in armor charged in, no hammer, no lightning. He hit the Hulk with his shoulder and bounced off. "I am Thor," he shouted. "This creature is not the enemy. He was made to rage." "Made by who?" Stark said. Thor pointed to the roof. A man in a green coat watched them, calm, hands behind his back. Loki. "By my brother's poison," Thor said. "He drives your strongest to destroy your other strongest." Janet understood. Loki had picked off Earth's protectors one fight at a time. The Hulk was only the weapon. Loki was the goal. "Then we stop hitting each other," she said. She flew to the Hulk's ear, tiny, and did not sting. She spoke instead. "He's using you. The man on the roof. He wants you to break us." The Hulk stopped. His chest heaved. He looked at the green coat on the roof. Bruce Banner surfaced in that red glare for one breath. The rage found a new target. The Hulk turned and leapt at Loki. Stark flew after him. Hank grabbed Janet's hand mid-air, both of them small now, riding the wind. Thor climbed the wall with bare hands. The five of them hit the roof together. Loki raised a knife. He never got to use it. Janet grew behind him and drove a full sting into his neck. He dropped. They stood over him in the smoke. Stark looked at her. "The bug saved the play." "Wasp," she said. Thor bound Loki's wrists. "We fought as one," he said. "We should not scatter." Fury's helicopter rose over the roof, spotlight on them all. He had a name ready. Avengers. Janet had earned her place at the front. Now the world would learn what came next.
