Chapter 1

Juliette threw up again at three in the morning, and this time she was too weak to reach the bathroom. She hunched over the trash can beside her guitar-covered bed and shook. Her stomach had always been broken. She and Scarlett were born with it, and their birth mother had called it a lie. Rayna never called it a lie. Rayna took them in when they were thirteen, and Juliette had promised herself she would never do anything to make Rayna send them away. So she stayed quiet. She did not want to be a burden tonight. But she could not stay quiet. A groan came through the wall from Scarlett's room. Juliette pushed off the mattress and stumbled to her twin sister's door. Scarlett lay curled on her piano-print blanket, gripping her belly. Sweat stuck her blonde hair to her face. She looked up at Juliette and gave a small, sick smile. "You too?" she whispered. Even sick, Scarlett tried to make it lighter. She always did. They had survived their childhood by taking turns being brave. "Both of us," Juliette said. She sat on the floor and held her sister's hand. Rayna found them there at dawn. She flicked on the light and stopped in the doorway, one hand on the frame. Her red hair was still messy from sleep. She did not gasp or panic. She crossed the room and pressed her palm to Scarlett's forehead, then Juliette's. "You're both burning up," Rayna said. She kept her voice level, the way she always did when things got bad. "Almost a hundred and two, I'd guess." "I'm sorry," Juliette said. Her throat burned. "I didn't want to wake you." Rayna knelt so their eyes were level. "Don't you ever be sorry for being sick. That's not how this family works." She said it plain, like a fact. Juliette's chest loosened. That was all she had ever wanted to hear. Rayna sat back on her heels and thought. "Your bandmate ran offstage last night. Threw up behind the amp. He texted the whole group this morning saying he's got a stomach bug." She looked at Scarlett. "You were standing right next to him at the merch table." "So it's a bug," Juliette said. "Not our stomachs." "Could be both," Rayna said. "You two catch things easy, and your guts don't handle it. But a bug means it passes. We just have to get you through it." She stood. "No clinic yet. Fevers this age I can watch. If you can't keep water down by tonight, that changes." She brought a bowl, a cool cloth, and small cups of water. She set them on the floor between the two beds. Then she pulled a chair into the hall so she could see both doors at once. "I'm not going anywhere," Rayna said. "Sip when you can." Juliette lay back and watched her sister breathe. For the first time all night, the fear was smaller than the fever.
