Chapter 1

Kael Zarev knelt in the sand at midnight and pressed his palm flat to the desert floor. He had guarded this sacred site for eleven years, and never once had a starfruit tree bloomed out of its season. Tonight one had. He felt it through the earth like a struck bell, its glowing fruit throbbing where no fruit should hang. His amber eyes brightened to twin lamps as he reached deeper into the dunes. The desert answered, and what it told him made his jaw tighten. Predators were coming. He felt them far out in the deep dunes, dozens of heavy bodies dragging across the sand, drawn toward the tree's strange stirring. Sand-hunters. They hunted by warmth and by the pulse of living magic. The tree was screaming to them without a sound. Kael rose. His task was simple to name and hard to do: silence the tree before the hunters reached the sacred ground he was sworn to protect. He ran to the tree and set both hands on its cracked trunk. The single fruit burned white above him, hot as a coal. Kael poured his magic into the roots, willing the sand around them to still. For a moment the tree's pulse slowed. Then it flared brighter, fighting him, calling louder. The ground trembled under the first hunters. He was making it worse. A small creature dropped from the branches onto his shoulder. It had huge glowing eyes and thin feathered fins along its back, and it clung to his collar without fear. Kael froze. The little thing turned its bright gaze from him toward the fruit, then out toward the closing hunters, as if it already knew the path. It leapt to the ground and scampered three steps toward the dunes, then looked back and waited. Kael understood. He could not silence the tree. But he could move its call. He scooped the creature into one hand and dug the other deep into the sand, pulling. The desert rose in a long ridge under his feet, a road of packed sand racing away from the sacred site. He fed the tree's pulse into it, channeling the glow outward through the earth, dragging the beacon away from the ground he guarded. The hunters turned. Kael felt them wheel and follow the false trail he laid, streaming out toward empty dunes far from the sacred site. He held the channel until his arms shook and his vision swam. Then he let the sand collapse. The trail died. Silence spread back across the dunes. He sank to his knees beside the tree. The fruit still glowed, quiet now, no longer calling. The creature climbed back up the trunk and settled among the leaves, watching him with patient eyes. Kael stared at it. A tree had bloomed alone, in the wrong season, and something had woken to guard it. He had answered a summons. He did not yet know whose.
