Kara Brooks's dream is winning the heart of a lifelong best friend who shares every secret and lazy afternoon with her..
Kara Brooks had moved to Mistweald to find a best friend, and three days in, she had spoken to no one. She knew this was backward. Most people found friends after they settled in. Kara had packed her bags for the opposite reason. She wanted someone to share lazy afternoons with, someone who told her everything. The problem was simple. She knew nobody here, and she had nowhere to meet them. Her rented bungalow sat right on the beach. It had a heated pool and a bubbling tub out back. She floated in that water alone for an hour, staring at the empty shoreline. A home like this was meant for two. She climbed out and dried off. Sitting around would not fix anything. Kara needed a reason for strangers to talk to her. She dug through a box and found the headband she had packed on a whim. It had soft leopard-pattern ears in pink, white, and grey. She fit it onto her blonde hair and checked the mirror. It was silly. It was also exactly the kind of silly that made people smile. She left the bungalow and followed a path toward the mountain. A sign pointed to a hot spring. Pale sand gave way to flat stepping stones. At the end, steam rose from a pool ringed by rock. It was quiet and hidden, the sort of place locals might keep as a secret. Kara eased into the warm water and waited. For a long while, nothing happened. Then soft wings hummed above the steam. A small snow leopard drifted down on delicate fairy wings. It had spotted winter fur and bright blue eyes. It landed on a rock beside her and tilted its head at her ears. Kara laughed. "You like the ears? We match." The creature chirped and pressed its cold nose to her cheek. She reached out slowly. It let her stroke its fur. It curled against her shoulder as if it had chosen her. She had come looking for a person. Instead she had found this. Footsteps crunched on the stones. A voice called out, sharp and surprised. "That's a fairy snow leopard. They don't go to anyone." Kara turned. Someone stood at the edge of the pool, staring at the creature against her shoulder. She could not see them clearly through the steam. But she understood one thing now. The leopard was not a stray. It belonged to someone, and that someone had just found her holding it. Kara held still, her hand on the warm fur. The secluded spring was no longer secret, and the friend she wanted had just walked in on the strangest possible introduction.
The steam thinned, and Kara finally saw her. The woman owned the leopard still curled against Kara's shoulder. She had wild curls streaked red, black, and purple, freckles across every inch of skin, and a white lace catsuit over a pink bikini. She looked nothing like someone ready to scold. She looked worried. "I'm sorry," Kara said. "I didn't know it was yours. It just came to me." The woman knelt at the pool's edge. She watched the leopard nuzzle Kara's neck and her shoulders softened. "It never does that," she said. "Not with strangers. I'm Tyra." Her voice dropped, shy now, careful. "I guess you're special." Kara's chest warmed. Three days alone, and here was someone looking at her like she mattered. "I'm Kara." Tyra reached out and touched Kara's wet sleeve. She frowned. "You climbed in with your clothes on. You'll freeze when you get out." She stood and offered her hand. "Come with me. I keep dry things nearby. Let me fix this." Kara took the hand. The leopard fluttered ahead on small wings. Tyra led her along the stones to a space carved into the rock. Water fell from the ceiling in cool silver lines, soaking the stone floor. It looked like rain trapped inside a cave. "Stand under it," Tyra said. "Rinse the spring off first." Kara hesitated. "In my clothes?" Tyra smiled and stepped under the falling water beside her. Her lace catsuit went sheer in seconds. "Why not? They're already wet." She laughed, warm and easy, and pulled Kara into the spray. The cold rain hit Kara's black crop top and thin pants. She gasped, then laughed too. Tyra's hands smoothed Kara's soaked hair back from her face. For the first time since moving here, Kara felt chosen by a person, not just a creature. "Now," Tyra said, "let's get you out of these." She led Kara dripping to a side room. A black bed stood there, dressed in dark sheets and pink leopard pillows. Tyra opened a drawer and held up two soft outfits. "Pick one," she said. "Something that feels like you." Kara chose the pink leopard print. It matched her headband. Tyra grinned like that answer meant something. She helped Kara peel off the wet top and slip into the dry one, her touch gentle and sure. "There," Tyra said. She stepped back and studied Kara. "You should stay tonight. The spring is mine, but I never bring anyone here." She bit her lip. "I'd like you to be the first." Kara's heart pounded. She had come to Mistweald for exactly this. A door opening. A person wanting her close. "I'll stay," she said. Tyra's face lit up. The leopard landed between them and purred. The stranger from the spring was no longer a threat. She was an invitation. And now Kara stood inside Tyra's secret world, wondering how deep this new bond would go.
Kara woke to the sound of someone moving in the cave. Tyra still slept beside her under the dark sheets. Kara slipped off the bed and followed the noise toward the spring. A slim woman with pink and white hair crouched by the water, soaking a lace dress in the basin. Kara recognized her at once. Luna. The boutique girl who had used the spring in secret to test her wet designs. Kara and Tyra had caught her weeks ago and promised not to tell. "You came back," Kara whispered. Luna wrung the dress and held it up. The dark lace clung and went clear. "I need a favor," she said. She nodded at a camera on a tripod near the wall. "I have a buyer. One good photo. I can't hold the fabric and shoot at the same time." Kara glanced back toward the bed. This was her chance. One day in, and already someone needed her, trusted her. But Tyra was still asleep. If Kara left to help Luna, she would wake alone. The new bond was one night old. Kara feared breaking it before it set. "I can't," Kara said. "Tyra will wake up. I don't want her to think I slipped off." Luna's face stayed flat. "Then wake her." She said it plain, like it was obvious. Kara froze. She had been so busy guarding Tyra's attention that she forgot a third person could simply join. She went back and touched Tyra's shoulder. "Luna needs us," she said. "Both of us." Tyra sat up, blinking. When she saw Luna, she grinned and stretched. "The boutique girl. Good. I love a project." They moved to a quiet chamber where a soft waterfall fell into a calm pool. The light there was even and clean. Luna put on the wet dress and stepped under the spray. Tyra held the fabric smooth against Luna's back. Kara worked the camera, framing the shot the way Luna asked. "Chin down," Kara said. "Now." The shutter clicked. Luna checked the screen. For once she smiled. "That's the one." She looked between them. "I'll tell the buyer two people made it work." She paused. "Three." Tyra laughed and pulled Kara and Luna into a wet hug. Kara felt the fear drain out of her, as Luna and Tyra kissed her cheeks. She had not stolen Tyra away, and she had not lost her. She had learned to add instead of choose. Luna packed her camera and the dress. At the cave mouth she stopped. "Next week," she said. "Bigger shoot and pieces for you both. I'll need you again." Then she was gone. Kara stood dripping between Tyra and the quiet falls. One friend was turning into two. But now there was a standing appointment, a commitment she had made for both of them without asking Tyra first.
