Chapter 1

King Frostwalker was a gray and white cat, and he was the only one left who could crown a king. For three winters the frozen north had bled itself dry over an empty throne. Frostwalker held the old right of the icemaker: he alone could place the sacred ice crown on a rightful head and end the wars. But this morning the crown was gone. A rival faction had smashed the vault door and stolen it in the night. Frostwalker stood over the broken vault. Melted ice pooled where the crown once sat. Without it, any king he named was just a cat in a cold room. His whole purpose sat inside those raiders' hands now. "You look like you've lost a fight you didn't get to start." Muffin Hensley leaned in the doorway. She was an orange cat who walked upright, in a purple sweater and jeans, and she had scouted the ridges for Frostwalker since the wars began. She tossed him a scrap of blue cloth. "Their banner. They went north on foot. Heavy crown, slow legs." Frostwalker gripped the cloth. "If they hide the crown, the north stays broken. I have to take it back today." "Then we don't chase," Muffin said. "We cut ahead." She knew a narrow gorge the raiders would have to cross. Frostwalker trusted her more than his own guard. They ran the frozen ridges while the raiders trudged below. By dusk Frostwalker crouched above the gorge. Six raiders. One carried the crown wrapped in fur. He had no army. He had a scout and a plan. Frostwalker did not have strength to beat them. He had cold. He pressed both paws to the gorge wall and pulled the frost from the stone. Ice crept across the path. The raiders slipped. Their legs shot out. The one holding the crown fell hard. Frostwalker dropped down and seized the crown from the raider's arms. He turned to run and stopped short. The crown was cracked. The fall had split it clean across the brow. A wide fracture ran through the sacred ice. In his paws it looked less like a crown and more like a broken cup. "We got it," Muffin said, sliding down beside him. Then she saw the crack. Her ears fell. Frostwalker held the ruined crown. A cracked crown crowned no one. The raiders scrambled up and fled north, leaving him with the thing he had chased and no way to use it. "It's broken," he said. "A broken crown means no king. It means the wars go on." Muffin touched the fracture. Inside the split, pale light pulsed. Old runes glowed along the crack, deep in the ice, hidden until now. "That's not just ice," she said quietly. Frostwalker leaned close. The light matched no crown he knew. It matched something older. He had come to save the crown. Instead he had opened it.

Frostwalker carried the cracked crown back toward his castle of ice. The runes still glowed inside the split, faint and blue. He had won the crown but broken it, and now a bigger worry chased him. Muffin ran beside him along the ridge. "They saw the crack," she said. "Word travels. A broken crown looks like a weak one. The raiders will come back for it." She was right. By dawn, dark shapes crossed the snow below. The raiders had turned around. They meant to seize the crown before Frostwalker could hide it or heal it. He gripped it tighter. If they took it now, cracked and glowing, the north would never see a king. Then the sky turned red. Heat rolled across the frost. A dragon dropped from the clouds, its scales lit with running fire. On its back sat a red cat in a gold crown and a fur-trimmed cape. Frostwalker knew him at once. Eric the First, the rival who claimed the throne without any right to it. "You dropped something, kingmaker," Eric called down. He smiled. "A cracked crown. How fitting." His dragon breathed a line of fire across the snow between Frostwalker and the raiders. The raiders froze, unsure who to fight. Frostwalker understood. Eric did not want to help him. Eric wanted the crown for himself. Two enemies now circled the same broken prize, and Frostwalker stood in the middle with it in his paws. "You can't crown yourself," Frostwalker said. "Only I place the crown. That's the old right." "Then place it on my head," Eric said, "or I take it and melt it to slag." Frostwalker's mind moved fast. The runes gave him one chance. He pressed both paws to the crown and pulled cold into the crack, the same way he pulled frost from stone. The glow flared bright. A wave of freezing air burst outward. It struck the dragon's fire and turned it to steam. The dragon screamed and reared back. In the white blast, the raiders scattered and ran. Eric's dragon beat its wings and climbed away from the cold, carrying its rider off. Eric's voice cut through the mist. "This isn't over, Frostwalker. That crown answers to fire too." Then the ridge was quiet. Frostwalker knelt in the snow, breathing hard. The crown sat whole in his paws now. The cold had sealed the crack, fusing the ice back together. But the runes still glowed under the surface, brighter than before. Muffin crouched beside him. "You fixed it." "No," Frostwalker said. "I woke it." The crown pulsed warm against his fur, though it was made of ice. He had kept it from the raiders and from Eric. But now he held something that answered to more than his cold hands. Before he could crown any king, he had to learn what he had woken.

The awakened crown pulsed in Frostwalker's paws for three days. Then Eric came again. Frostwalker fled south with the crown, hoping to reach a safe vault. But Eric's dragon tracked the cold trail across the snow. Now Frostwalker stood at the gates of the Frostwalker Citadel, its pale towers rising over him. Eric and his fighters had chased him into the town of Spingland. He had nowhere left to run. Hooves and paws pounded the frozen street behind him. Frostwalker turned. Eric rode his fire dragon low over the rooftops. Its scales burned red, and heat rolled off it in waves. Melted snow ran down the citadel walls. "The chase ends here, kingmaker," Eric called. "Give me the crown, or my dragon burns this whole town." A broad-shouldered man in a fur coat stepped between Frostwalker and the dragon. His gray beard was thick with frost. This was Bjorn Frosthelm, a townsman of the ice kingdom, and he did not move. "You'll burn nothing," Bjorn said. "These are our homes." More townsfolk gathered behind him, shovels and axes in hand. They looked to Frostwalker, waiting. Frostwalker knew he could not fight the dragon alone. But he was not alone. He raised his voice. "Frosthelm. Get them behind the walls." Then he called for his own protector. The black cat came at a run. Ice crystals jutted from his shoulders and paws, glowing pale blue. He was Frostwalker's royal guard, sworn to shield him. "Point me at it, my king," the guard growled. He planted himself in the dragon's path. Eric's dragon dove and breathed fire. Frostwalker pressed both paws to the crown and pulled cold into it. The runes flared white. This time the power came faster, hungrier. A wall of freezing air burst from the crown and struck the flames. The guard drove his crystal fists into the dragon's chest as the frost hit. The dragon screamed. Ice crawled up its wings. Eric fought to keep his mount aloft. "Down! Get us down!" But the frost had locked one wing stiff. The dragon lurched sideways and crashed through a market stall. Eric spilled into the snow. He scrambled up, cape torn, crown crooked. His fighters saw him fall and broke ranks. "You won this street," Eric spat. He climbed onto the dragon's neck. It beat its half-frozen wings and rose, slow and clumsy. "But you can't hide forever. That crown will crack again." Then he was gone over the towers. Bjorn Frosthelm gripped Frostwalker's shoulder. The townsfolk cheered. Frostwalker looked down at the crown. The runes still glowed, brighter now, warm against his fur. He had driven Eric off and saved Spingland. But each time he used the crown, it grew stronger and stranger. He had woken something he did not understand, and now the whole town had seen its power. Word would spread. Every claimant would want it.

The crown burned brighter than ever in Frostwalker's paws. Its runes pulsed white, faster and hotter with each beat. Eric had fled Spingland days ago, but he had not gone far. He struck again at dawn, and this time he did not come alone. Frostwalker felt the heat before he saw them. Eric stood in the snow with his crown crooked, his cape scorched. Beside him crouched his fire dragon, one wing still stiff with old frost. And ahead of them both walked a dark red cat wreathed in flame. "Jack the Destroyer," Eric said. "Clear him out." Jack stepped forward. Fire dripped from his paws and hissed in the snow. He looked at Frostwalker without hurry. "Give it up," he said. "You lose either way. I'm just here to make it fast." His voice was flat, like he read it off a list. Frostwalker's royal guard planted himself in the snow. Ice crystals jutted from his shoulders, glowing pale blue. "Point me at it, my king," the guard growled. But Frostwalker heard something new in the crown. It did not want to be aimed. It wanted to be loosed. Frostwalker pressed both paws to the crown and pulled cold into it. The runes screamed white. This time the power did not wait for his command. A wall of freezing air exploded outward in every direction. Jack raised his flaming paws too late. The frost slammed him back and crusted his fur with ice. The dragon shrieked as both wings locked solid. Eric hit the ground and slid. But the crown did not stop. Cold poured out of it and would not be reined in. Frostwalker felt his own paws going numb. Frost climbed the citadel walls and froze the well. The guard staggered as the power ripped through him harder than he could hold. "My king," he gasped, "it's too much." Frostwalker tore his paws from the crown. The blast died. Silence fell over the frozen street. Eric dragged himself up, beaten. Jack cracked the ice off one shoulder and said nothing. The dragon could not fly. Eric spat blood in the snow. "Keep it, then," he snarled. "It'll kill you before it crowns anyone." He limped away, hauling Jack with him. The frozen dragon crawled behind. Frostwalker had won the street again. But he stared at the crown in horror. Its runes still glowed, and the cold had left his front paws white and stiff. Muffin Hensley crossed the ice toward him. She knelt and looked at his frostbitten paws. Then she looked at the crown, long and steady, the way she looked at anyone she meant to outlast. "Okay, so here's the thing," she said. "You didn't aim that. It aimed itself." She met his eyes. "You keep this up, it stops being your crown. It starts being your master." Frostwalker looked at his ruined paws and knew she was right. He could not use the crown again.

Chapter 5

Frostwalker set the crown on the table inside his Icekeep. Its runes still pulsed, faster now, hungry. His frostbitten paws ached when he touched it. Muffin Hensley stood across from him, arms folded. "You can't crown anyone with a thing that fights you," she said. "So we figure out what it really is." She leaned close and stared at the runes without blinking. The crown answered her. The runes flared white and cracked down the middle with a sharp snap. Frostwalker jumped back. A jagged shard of ice broke loose from the crown and fell to the floor. It glowed with ancient marks, the same runes carved deep in its heart. The crown itself dimmed and went cold and dead. His royal guard rushed in, ice crystals bristling on his shoulders. "My king, the crown—it's broken." He looked at the dark ceremonial band on the table. "Without it, you can crown no one." The three-winter war would grind on forever now. But Muffin did not look at the guard. She stared at the shard. Then she reached down and picked it up. The runes on the shard blazed at her touch. They did not burn her. They matched her, glowing bright against her orange fur like they had waited for her paw. Frostwalker felt the cold in the room shift. "Put it down," the guard warned. Muffin did not put it down. She turned the shard over, and her green eyes stayed steady, unafraid. "Okay, so here's the thing," she said slowly. "I've seen these marks before. Not read them. Seen them. In my sleep, every winter of my life." She pressed the shard to her chest. The glow sank into her fur and spread. "I know what this says. I know what it wants. And I shouldn't." Frostwalker stared at his scout. His trusted advisor. The one who had fought beside him to win the crown back. "Muffin. What are you?" She met his eyes and did not blink. "The one who made this crown made it to answer to their own hand. That's why it fights yours." Her voice stayed level, but her paw trembled. "It's answering mine, Tundey. It's answering me." The guard backed away. Frostwalker did not. He had spent his life hunting a rightful ruler to end the wars. He had crowned the wrong one once and buried the dead for it. Now the crown lay dead on his table, and the power it held glowed inside the cat who had guided him this far. "You're the creator," Frostwalker said. "Reborn." He looked at the shard, then at her. "The crown broke because it found you." Muffin closed her paw around the shard. The runes went quiet under her grip. "Then we've got a bigger problem than Eric," she said. "Because everyone who wants that crown is going to want me instead."

Chapter 6

Muffin held the glowing shard in one paw. Frostwalker watched the runes pulse against her orange fur. Then the great doors of the Icekeep burst inward. A red cat strode through, gold crown tilted on his head, cape dragging snow across the floor. Eric the First. Frostwalker's rival for the throne. Behind him, the ice pushed back like it feared him. But Eric was not alone. A pale figure floated at his shoulder, wrapped in white, calm as still water. "The try king," Eric said. He grinned. "Or the used-to-be. I heard your crown broke, Tundey. So I brought someone to take what's left." He gestured at the pale figure. "She's earned my army, my dragon, all of it. Kill the ice cat. Take the shard. And the frozen north is mine." The pale figure raised her paws. A glass flower bloomed in her grip, layered petals shining like blue ice. Light gathered inside it. Frostwalker's frostbitten paws throbbed. He could not use the crown's power anymore. He had none left to give. "Muffin," he said quietly. "Get behind the guard." But Muffin did not move. She stepped forward instead. She looked straight at the pale figure and did not blink. "Okay, so here's the thing," Muffin said. "You don't want this shard. You just want to win." The glass flower flared brighter. Muffin held her stare. One second. Two. Ten. The pale figure's paws began to shake. "You're going to look away," Muffin said. "You always do." The pale figure blinked. The glass flower dimmed. In that gap, Muffin pressed the shard to her chest. The runes she had read her whole life answered her hand. Cold poured out of her, sharp and clean. It swept across the floor and climbed the pale figure's legs. The glass flower cracked. The light inside it died. The pale figure dropped and did not rise. Eric stared. His grin was gone. "That's not possible," he said. "The crown answers a king. It answers me." He drew his blade and rushed at Frostwalker. The royal guard stepped between them, a black cat armored in ice, and caught Eric's arm mid-swing. "You lose, red cat," the guard growled, and hurled him back through the broken doors. Eric landed in the snow. He looked at Muffin, at the shard glowing in her paw, and understood. "You lied to me," he snarled at the fallen figure. Then he ran. His footsteps faded into the wind. Frostwalker knelt beside the dead glass flower. He picked up a shard of it. Eric was beaten, for now. But Muffin had won the fight, not him. The power to crown a king lived in her hand alone. "He'll come back," Frostwalker said. "With worse than a hired sorcerer. They all will." Muffin closed her paw around the shard. "Then we don't wait for them," she said. "We find out what this thing was built to do."
