Chapter 1

Kyle Anderson had picked up the same passenger four times this month, and he still didn't know one true thing about him. The app said Sebastian. The pin always dropped at the tall glass building with the balconies stacked like shelves. Kyle drove a 2014 Honda Civic through Vigilpost for twelve hours a day and told himself passengers forgot him before the door clicked shut. Sebastian Ashford kept booking him by name. That should have meant something. So far it had only meant three rides of weather talk and one ride where Kyle asked about his weekend and got "fine" back like a closed window. Tonight Sebastian slid into the back seat in a pink sweater and sunglasses pushed up into his hair. He smelled like something expensive Kyle couldn't name. Kyle pulled into traffic and tried again. "Long day?" "Not really." "Big plans?" "No." Kyle nodded at the mirror and gave up. He drove three blocks in the kind of silence that made his hands sweat on the wheel. At a red light he saw Sebastian turning something small and gold between his fingers. An old charm on a worn cord. The paint on the edges was rubbed thin. "My grandmother gave it to my mother," Sebastian said, before Kyle asked. "My mother gave it to me. It hasn't worked once." He said it flat, like he was reading a receipt. Kyle laughed before he could stop himself. "That's the second-funniest thing I've heard this week." "What was the first?" "I'll let you know when I figure it out." Sebastian looked up. Kyle watched him in the mirror and saw the corner of his mouth move. It wasn't a smile yet, but it was on the way. "You always do that," Sebastian said. "Do what." "Say the thing most drivers wouldn't." "You noticed." "I notice a lot." At the tall glass building Sebastian didn't get out right away. He held the charm in his palm and looked at it, then at Kyle. "I'm Sebastian." "I know. It's on my screen." "I mean I'm telling you." He set the charm on the console between them. "Hold it for me until next time. It's been unlucky. Maybe you'll do better." Kyle picked it up. It was warm from Sebastian's hand. "There's going to be a next time?" "I already booked Thursday." Sebastian shut the door. Kyle sat at the curb with the charm in his fist and a name that finally belonged to a person. The small talk was over. Thursday was three days away, and he had three days to figure out what he'd say when it wasn't small anymore.

Kyle drove home with the charm in his pocket and Thursday counting down in his head. He had a name now. That was all. Sebastian Ashford booked his car and knew his silences, and Kyle knew a building with balconies and a sweater the color of gum. Two days. He could not show up Thursday with weather in his mouth again. He needed one real thing about the man in the back seat, or the whole thing would flatten the second the door shut. He parked outside his building, a plain block of stacked balconies and clean paint that the landlord called Budget Haven. In his kitchen he set the charm on the counter and opened the app on his phone. He searched the name. The first hit was a swim team roster from a college two states over. Sebastian Ashford, freestyle, third place at a regional meet six years back. Kyle scrolled. There was a photo. Sebastian on a pool deck, hair wet, laughing at something outside the frame, a pair of faded blue trunks hanging off his hips like he had worn them a hundred summers. Kyle stared at the laugh. He had not seen that laugh in the car. Not once. He closed the phone. He had something now. He also had a problem. If he walked up Thursday and said, I know you used to swim, Sebastian would hear a driver who went home and searched him. That was not a spark. That was a restraining order waiting to happen. Kyle sat at the counter a long time. Then he opened the app again and did the harder thing. He deleted the tab. He picked up the charm and turned it in his fingers the way Sebastian had. The paint was worn where a thumb had rubbed it for years. He did not need a swim roster. He needed a question Sebastian would want to answer. He got out a receipt and wrote on the back. Not what do you do. Not where are you from. He wrote, what's one thing you used to be good at that you miss. He read it twice. It was small and it was real and it did not come from a search bar. He folded the receipt around the charm and set both by his keys. Thursday was still two days out. He had stopped bringing nothing. He had brought a question instead, and the search history he wiped so he could ask it clean.

Thursday came slow, then all at once. Kyle worked a morning shift with the charm in his pocket and the folded receipt beside it. He checked the app between fares. At two o'clock the ping came. Sebastian Ashford. Pickup at the balconies. Drop-off address: Budget Haven Apartments. Kyle read it twice. That was his building. Sebastian had booked a ride to Kyle's place. Kyle pulled to the curb under the balconies and Sebastian slid in wearing a jacket Kyle had not seen before. He had a small bag on his lap. Kyle held out the charm on his palm. Sebastian looked at it, then closed Kyle's fingers back around it. "Keep holding," he said. "You said Budget Haven," Kyle said. Sebastian nodded once. "You said Thursday. I figured Thursday could be something." Kyle put the car in drive. He did not trust his voice yet. Three blocks in he found it. "One thing you used to be good at that you miss," he said. Sebastian looked over. He thought about it a long time. "Swimming," he said. "I was fast. I stopped when it stopped being fun." Kyle nodded like the answer was new to him. It was. He had read a roster. He had not heard a man say that. He parked in his spot and walked Sebastian up. His kitchen was clean because he had cleaned it twice. Sebastian set the bag on the counter and pulled out a small pink CD player with a heart-covered disc already loaded. "Housewarming," Sebastian said. "It's ridiculous. I saw it and thought of you." Kyle laughed. He pressed play. Soft strings filled the kitchen. Sebastian leaned against the counter and watched him. "You're the second-best thing in this room," Kyle said. Sebastian smiled. "What's first?" "The music," Kyle said. Sebastian laughed, and it was the laugh from the photo, the one Kyle had not earned in the car. They ended up on the couch. Sebastian kissed him once, careful, then again, not. At some point Sebastian's bag tipped and a small foil square slid onto the cushion between them. Kyle looked at it. Sebastian looked at him. "I wasn't assuming," Sebastian said. "I was hoping." Kyle picked up the square and set it on the coffee table, flat, in plain view. "Not tonight," he said. "But I want you to leave it there." Sebastian's face did something Kyle wanted to memorize. He stayed another hour. He kissed Kyle at the door and said Saturday. Kyle closed the door and stood in his kitchen with the music still playing and a foil square on his coffee table and a charm in his pocket he had forgotten to give back. Sebastian had asked for a ride to Kyle's place, and Kyle had let him in.

Saturday moved slow the way Thursday had. Kyle cleaned the apartment again, then stopped himself before he cleaned it a third time. The foil square still sat on the coffee table where he had left it Thursday night. He walked to the corner store and came back with a small bottle of lubricant in a paper bag. He set it in the drawer of the side table, not on top, not hidden. Then he sat on the couch and waited. At seven, the buzzer rang. Sebastian came up carrying takeout and a bottle of wine. He set both on the counter and looked at Kyle like he was checking the weather. They ate at the counter with the pink disc player going low in the background. Sebastian talked about his week. Kyle listened more than he spoke. When Sebastian reached across for the salt, Kyle caught his wrist. Sebastian went still. "Couch," Kyle said. Sebastian smiled a small, careful smile and followed him. The second kiss was slower than the ones on Thursday. Sebastian's hand found the back of Kyle's neck. Kyle's found Sebastian's shirt. The foil square was right there on the table. Kyle picked it up this time. He opened the drawer, took out the bottle, and set both on the cushion between them. Sebastian looked at the bottle, then at Kyle, and laughed once, surprised. "You planned," Sebastian said. "I hoped," Kyle said. Sebastian kissed him again and did not stop. They moved to the bedroom because the couch was too small and Kyle wanted a door, even a door to nothing. Kyle left the lamp on. He wanted to see Sebastian's face. Sebastian let him. After, Sebastian slept with one arm across Kyle's chest. Kyle did not sleep. He stared at the ceiling and listened to Sebastian breathe. His phone buzzed on the nightstand. A ride ping. He silenced it. It buzzed again. He turned it face down. On the third buzz he looked. Not a ride. A text from a number he did not know. It said, Sebastian, we need to talk about Sunday. Kyle read it twice. He set the phone down. Sebastian was still asleep. Kyle looked at the man in his bed and understood that he did not know who else was waiting for him tomorrow. The charm was still in his jeans on the floor. He had still not given it back.
