Chapter 1

Lasse adjusted his sunglasses and squinted at the goats grazing near the forest edge. Thirty years he'd spent chasing fjord anomalies across Scandinavia, living alone, waiting for something impossible. Now he wanted something simple—to be Denmark's first goat whisperer. He craved that connection, that validation. One goat, just one, needed to approach him without fear. His hands trembled as he stood motionless, watching. Minutes passed. The goats kept their distance, chewing grass, ignoring him completely. His throat tightened. Maybe he'd been isolated too long. Maybe animals could smell the loneliness on him. He lowered himself to the ground and sat cross-legged. Waiting felt like drowning, but he stayed put. A brown goat lifted its head. It stared at him. Lasse held his breath. The goat took three steps closer, then stopped. Lasse's heart hammered against his ribs. He thought about the six-story apartment building he'd spotted yesterday—sleek, modern, with small balconies. It stood alone near the forest, quiet and clean. He imagined living there with goats nearby, finally at peace. The building represented everything he wanted: a real home, not another research station. The brown goat bleated once and turned away. Lasse exhaled slowly. Not today. But he'd come back tomorrow. And the day after that. He'd keep trying until one of them trusted him. He pushed himself up from the ground and brushed dirt from his pants. The apartment building waited. So did he. Morning came cold and bright. Lasse walked the fence line until he found the wooden gate. The pine boards felt rough under his palm, warm from the sun. He lifted the latch and stepped through into the grazing area. The goats scattered at first, moving toward the far edge. He stood still and counted his breaths. This was it—his actual beginning. No more watching from outside. He was inside their world now, committed to learning their language. One day they'd know he meant no harm. One day he'd live in that apartment building with balconies, wake up early, and walk through this same gate like it was the most normal thing. He closed the gate behind him and sat down in the grass. The waiting had changed. It felt less like drowning now. More like planting seeds. Weeks passed in the same rhythm. Lasse arrived each morning, passed through the gate, and sat. The goats stopped running when they saw him. They grazed closer, though never close enough to touch. He watched them, learned their patterns, saw which ones led and which ones followed. On good days he imagined the future—making cheese, maybe selling it at a small wooden fence where people from town could stop by. He'd hand them samples, talk about the goats, finally be part of something real. On bad days his hands shook and doubt crept in. But he kept showing up. The apartment building stayed in view through the trees, a reminder that this life could actually happen. He wasn't chasing anomalies anymore. He was building trust, one quiet morning at a time. And that felt like enough.
