Lavinia paris's dream is establishing a perfume garden marketplace where rare scents draw wealthy patrons..
Lavinia stood at the edge of the empty plot where her perfume garden would rise, if she could keep the dream from collapsing before it started. She needed rare plants to draw the kind of patrons who wouldn't waste time on anything common. The letter had arrived that morning, written on heavy paper that smelled faintly of bergamot. The grower she'd spent three months courting had withdrawn his agreement. Someone else had bought exclusive rights to his entire lavender crop—the rare highland variety that bloomed silver-violet and carried notes most commercial fields couldn't touch. The certificate she'd kept in her desk drawer, the one guaranteeing her access, now meant nothing. She traced the route to the grower's estate in her mind, watching the landscape shift from her modest holdings to the hills where old money lived. The competitor's manor rose there like a wedding cake, all towers and balconies that announced generations of unbroken wealth. They didn't need to charm anyone. They just bought what they wanted and locked the doors behind them. Lavinia folded the letter and slipped it into her pocket. She couldn't outspend them, but she could still outmaneuver them. The birthmark on her cheek caught the morning light as she turned back toward town. She had other growers to visit, and this time she'd bring more than certificates and polite requests.
The next grower lived two valleys over, far enough from the manor that maybe the competitor's influence hadn't reached yet. Lavinia carried no certificates this time. She'd learned that lesson. What she brought instead was a plan that made her stomach tight with nerves. She found him at the mouth of a cave system where gems caught the daylight and threw it back in fragments of rose and amber. He grew his rarest stock inside, he explained, where the crystalline walls held moisture and the stones radiated a steady warmth even in winter. The cave entrance had a wooden platform built into it—a speaking stage where he demonstrated his oils to buyers who made the journey. He gestured to the platform, inviting her to show what she'd brought. Lavinia set out her collection of sample oils on the polished wood. Each vial held a scent she'd blended herself—bergamot with wild thyme, jasmine cut with cedar. She explained her vision for the perfume garden, the rare plants she needed, the patrons she would draw. He listened without expression. Then he asked the question she'd been dreading: why would he risk his reputation selling to someone with no standing when the manor offered guaranteed payment and instant credibility? She took a breath and made her choice. Speaking loudly enough for the two other growers who'd wandered over to hear, she said the manor's perfumes were predictable, their blends safe and forgettable despite their fancy bottles. She said her garden would offer what old money actually wanted—something they couldn't find anywhere else. The grower's face tightened. He said he'd sell to her, but only because he was tired of boring clients. As she walked back to her cart with his handshake agreement, she felt the weight of what she'd done. The manor would hear about this. She'd just made an enemy of someone who could crush her, and all she had to show for it was one grower's promise and a reputation she'd now have to defend.
