Chapter 1

Lilith Nightshade had three hours until the sun killed her, and no door to hide behind. She crouched in a dead garden, her black hair tangled with frost. For two centuries she had hunted one thing above blood: a mortal whose soul matched hers, someone she could sire into an eternal companion. Last night she had finally crossed the mountains into this valley to search. She had not planned to lose her old crypt to a landslide the same night. Now the eastern sky showed its first gray threat, and her skin remembered fire. She ran. Thorny branches tore her sleeve. A willow blocked her path, its black and blue limbs sweeping the ground like curtains. She could hide under it, but leaves would not stop the sun. She needed walls. Stone. A roof. Something snarled near her boot. A rabbit the size of her fist bared tiny fangs, red eyes burning. Its gray fur bristled like a wolf's. The little beast lunged and bit her ankle, drawing a dark bead of blood. Lilith hissed, more surprised than hurt. The creature did not flee. It backed away, teeth still showing, then turned and bounded through the willow's branches. It wanted her to follow. Lilith had no better plan, so she chased it. The rabbit led her up a slope through the thinning dark. At the top, iron gates rose from the mist, spiked and black. Behind them stood a tall gothic manor, its walls draped in creeping vines, its windows glowing faint blue. Shutters. Deep cellars. Thick stone. Everything she needed to survive the morning. The rabbit squeezed between the gate bars and vanished into the shadows. Lilith pushed the gate. It groaned open. No one stopped her. The grounds felt empty, but not abandoned. Near the front steps sat a swinging chair, black and blue, its canopy shaped like spread bat wings. Someone had placed it there to enjoy quiet nights. Someone lived here. The sky brightened. Lilith had no time to be careful. She climbed the steps and pushed the heavy door. It opened. Then a voice stopped her cold. "You smell of fresh blood and old death. How interesting." Lilith turned. A tall woman stood among the vines, skinny and pale, with white hair falling past dark wings. A spiked tail curled behind her black heels. Her eyes were black with no white at all. She had been watching the whole time. "The sun is coming," the fae said. She tilted her head, amused. "You may enter. But guests here pay their debts." Lilith felt the first warmth touch her neck. She had no choice. She stepped inside, and the door shut behind her. She had her lair. She had also just made a bargain with something older and stranger than herself, and she did not yet know the price.

Lilith woke in a bed shaped like a coffin, black wood with green trim. Green-and-black wallpaper covered the walls. Carved skulls watched from a shelf. The floor shone like still water. The fae had given her a fine room, but a room was not a home. Lilith knew the truth now. She owed a debt she had not named. Any mortal she courted, any soul she chose to make her eternal companion, the fae could seize to collect her price. She could not build a love on borrowed ground. She rose and went to find the fae. She meant to pay the debt tonight, whatever it cost, so her future would be her own. A cat met her in the hall. Small, black, fluffy, with green eyes and tiny white fangs. A crescent charm hung at its throat. It had the look of her own kind, a vampire thing, bred for shadow. It sat on the dark floor and stared at her. "The lady is not here," the cat said. Its voice was dry and bored. "She hunts in the next valley. Three nights, maybe four." Lilith did not flinch at a talking cat. In two centuries she had seen stranger. "Then I'll wait." "You'll wait in her house, deeper in her debt each hour." The cat licked a paw. "Every night under her roof, the price grows. That was the bargain. Did she not say?" She had not. Lilith felt the trap close. Shelter was survival, but this shelter fed the very chain she wanted to break. The longer she stayed safe, the less she could ever offer anyone she loved. "How do I pay it off?" she asked. The cat's green eyes brightened. "You can't buy it with blood or gold. Only with a name. Give her the name of the one you want most, and she frees you. She keeps the name instead." Lilith understood. The fae wanted the one soul Lilith had crossed mountains to find. If Lilith ever named her true companion, the fae would own that mortal, not her. She made her choice fast. "Then I take nothing from her." She gathered her torn cloak. She would not sleep in this coffin again. A debt that grew each night was a noose, and a lair she could lose was no lair at all. Better the open ground than a home that sold her heart. "Leaving?" The cat rose, tail high. "The sun comes in three hours." "I'll find my own walls before then." Lilith walked to the door. "And when I find the one, no one will take them from me." The cat trotted after her, fangs showing in a small grin. "I like you better than the last guest," it said. "I'll show you a crypt she doesn't own." Lilith stepped out under the fading stars. She had left her borrowed haven, and her debt stopped growing. Now she had a guide, and no roof. The hunt for a home of her own began again.

Chapter 3

The cat led Lilith to a gothic crypt the fae did not own. Stone walls, pointed arches, carved saints black with age. Lilith stepped toward the door and stopped. A gray rabbit crouched in the grass. Red eyes. A mouth of small sharp teeth. It had followed her since the manor. The cat flattened its ears. "The lady's spy," the cat said. "It carries names back to her. Speak to anyone while it watches, and it learns who they are. Then she owns them." Lilith understood the trap now. She had left the manor to keep her future love free. But the rabbit turned every greeting into a gift for the fae. She could not approach a single soul in Grimm Hollow without handing over a name. So she could not run from it. She had to break it. The rabbit watched her. Lilith watched it back. She would not speak. She would not name herself, and she would give it no one to carry home. She stepped past the crypt, into the trees, drawing the rabbit after her, away from anyone it might mark. A pink-eyed wolf pup burst from the brush. White fur, teeth bared, it lunged at the rabbit. The rabbit screeched and bolted. The pup chased it over roots and stone. Then the pup changed. Fur drew back. Bones stretched. A woman stood where the pup had run. Pink hair, blue eyes, black boots. She caught the rabbit by the scruff before it reached the dark. "This thing's been tracking you," she said. Flat. No wasted words. "I've watched it two nights." Lilith kept her mouth shut. One word and the rabbit would have the werewolf's name. The woman saw the fear. "It only takes names," she said. "So don't give it one." She snapped the rabbit's neck in one motion and dropped it. The red eyes went dull. "There. Nothing left to carry." The cat crept forward and sniffed the body. "Dead," it said. "The lady's eye is blind now. She won't know what you touch." Lilith let herself breathe. The chain to the fae was cut. She could speak again. She looked at the woman who had freed her. Something in her chest went still and sure, the way it had never gone in two centuries. "You could have left it alive," Lilith said. "Why help a stranger?" "I know what it's like to be hunted." The woman wiped her hands on her skirt. "Something hunts me too. Every full moon. I don't let it win." "What's your name?" Lilith asked. The woman almost smiled. "Luna." Lilith knew then. This was the soul she had crossed mountains to find. The rabbit was dead. The fae could not claim Luna now. But the fae still wanted a name, and Lilith had just spoken the only one that could pay her debt.

The name hung in the air between them. Lilith watched Luna's face and felt the cold truth settle. The rabbit was dead, but the debt was not. The moment she said "Luna" aloud, the fae's claim locked onto the one soul she had crossed centuries to find. The black cat pressed against her ankle. "The lady owns her now," it said quietly. "A name is a debt paid." Luna heard it. She did not flinch. "So I belong to her." Flat. No fear in it. "Fine. Better me than you." She turned toward the trees as if she meant to walk straight to the manor and surrender. Lilith caught her wrist. The werewolf's pulse beat hard under her thumb. Two hundred years she had searched, and she would not hand this one over for a roof. "No," Lilith said. "A name pays the debt. So I bring the lady another name." The cat's ears lifted. "The debt names your true companion. You can't lie to her." "I won't lie." Lilith let go of Luna. "I'll give her someone who wants to be owned." They found Roslyn in the crypt, folded on cold stone near the carved saints. Six months dead, and still herself by sheer will. Red hair, green eyes, the stitched seam on her cheek. Lilith had meant her as bait from the start, the trade she would make to keep her love free. Roslyn looked up and read Lilith's face before anyone spoke. "You're giving me to her," she said. Not a question. "I knew when you brought me here." It still landed like a slap, and she let it show, then let it pass. "A zombie without a master dies in fae land," Lilith said. "The lady keeps what she owns. You'd be hers. Protected. You want a master. She'll be one." Roslyn stood. Her knees cracked. "You don't love me. You're trading me." She looked at Luna, then back. "But I'd rather be owned than rot in a ditch. Yes. Take me to her." The gothic manor's doors opened before Lilith knocked. The fae waited inside, tall and white-haired, her dark wings folded, her spiked tail curled on the floor. Black eyes found Luna first. "You spoke the wolf's name," she said. "The wolf is mine." "The debt names my true companion," Lilith answered. "Luna isn't bound to me yet. I never sired her. I never claimed her soul." She set her hand on Roslyn's shoulder. "This one is mine. My servant. My companion. I claim her now, out loud, before you." The words made it true. Roslyn drew a breath she did not need and stood straighter, as if a weight lifted off her. The fae's tail went still. "A dead girl." "A companion," Lilith said. "Named and given. The debt is paid in full." The fae studied the seams on Roslyn's face, the green eyes that did not beg. Then she smiled. "She craves a leash. I can use that." She held out one black-gloved hand. "Come, little corpse." Roslyn stepped forward. At the threshold she looked back. "She'll keep me whole," she said. "That's more than you offered." There was no bitterness left in it, only fact. The doors closed. The claim on Luna snapped loose like a cut thread. Lilith felt it go. Outside, Luna stood in the dark grass. The small white wolf pup she carried inside her showed in her eyes, pink and wild and quiet now. "You traded a dead girl for me," she said. "I'm not worth that." "You never believe you're worth anything." Lilith stepped close. "That changes tonight." Luna held still. "Something hunts me every full moon. It had a claim on you once. It won't forgive this." Honest, as always. She offered the worst of herself first. "Let it come," Lilith said. "I've waited two centuries for your soul. I won't share it with anything." She cupped Luna's jaw. "I want to sire you. Make you mine. Forever, and devoted, and free of every other hand that reaches for you. Say yes." Luna's guilt went quiet, the way it had the first time Lilith touched her. "Yes," she said. One word. Enough. Lilith kissed the pulse at her throat, then bit. Luna gasped and gripped her arms. The werewolf's blood turned cold and sure under Lilith's mouth, and the bond closed between them, permanent and chosen. When Luna opened her eyes they still burned pink, but something in them had finally stopped running. The fae had her corpse. The crypt had its stone walls against the coming dawn. And Lilith Nightshade, after two hundred years alone, held the one companion no debt and no hunter could ever take from her again.
