Chapter 1

Lilith Shadowflame had been a goddess for six days, and still no one had come to worship her. She sat on a slab of black stone at the mouth of her cave, counting the empty path. Purple mist curled between the trees. A giant mushroom the size of a wagon glowed near the entrance, its cap throwing soft light across her bare thighs. She had chosen this spot because travelers passed the ridge above. Six days of travelers. Six days of nothing. Her plan for a goth obsidian temple, for crowds on their knees, for a shadow dragon coiled at her feet while strangers begged to please her — all of it required a first believer. She did not have one. The problem, she decided, was reach. A goddess in a cave was only a rumor. She needed a mouth in the world. She went back inside and pulled the black jewelry box from under a pile of furs. The lock had been broken before she found it. Inside lay a single silver collar, thorned on the inner rim. The seller had warned her the box was cursed. That was why she bought it. A cursed collar would bind whoever wore it to the one who fastened it. She carried the collar back to the cave mouth and waited. Before dusk, a woman climbed the path. Tall. Dark hair down to her hips. Two curved horns. Bare skin under black lace that covered almost nothing. A succubus, then, and lost, judging by the way she stopped when she saw the mushroom's light. "You're on my mountain," Lilith said. The succubus looked her over. Slow. Amused. "I didn't see a sign." "I haven't built it yet." Lilith stood. She was taller. She let the succubus see the collar in her hand. "Kneel, and I'll let you leave in the morning." The succubus laughed. Then she saw Lilith's eyes, and the laugh stopped. She did not kneel, but she did not run either. That was enough. Lilith crossed the distance in three steps and snapped the collar shut around her throat. The succubus gasped. Her knees hit the stone. The thorns on the inner rim sank in and drew a thin black line of blood that did not drip. Her pupils blew wide. When she looked up, the amusement was gone. Something else had replaced it, and it was worse, and it was exactly what Lilith wanted. "Say my name," Lilith said. "Lilith." The succubus's voice cracked. "Lilith Shadowflame." "Say what I am." "Goddess." Lilith smiled. "Good. Now go down the mountain. Tell every village on the road. Tell them where to bring their offerings. Tell them what I look like. Do not come back until someone follows you." The succubus rose, unsteady, and started down the path. Lilith watched her go. The collar would hold. The word would travel. Somewhere down there, the first worshipper was already walking toward her — and so was whatever else the cursed box had bound to that collar, which she had not asked about, and which the seller had not offered to explain.

Chapter 2

The succubus was gone down the mountain, and Lilith Shadowflame turned back to look at her cave with a colder eye. Six days ago it had been shelter. Now it had to be a temple. She stepped inside and saw what a stranger would see: a low ceiling, soot on the walls, a jewelry box shoved under furs, a bedroll on stone. No altar. No throne. A lair. If the succubus dragged even one villager up the path tonight, they would laugh and go home. She walked the cave and counted what she had. A back chamber where cold water ran down the wall into a shallow pool. A shelf of black rock wide enough to stand on. Quartz veins in the ceiling that caught the mushroom's light and threw it purple. Materials, not a temple. She needed hands. She pressed her palm flat to the pool and spoke the shape she wanted. Arches. A basin. Steps. The water went still, then climbed the wall in threads and hardened where she pointed. It was slow. By the time she had shaped one arch, her arms shook and the light outside had gone gray. She could not build this alone before dawn. Boots scraped on the path. Not the succubus. A man, climbing without hurry. Dark hair to his jaw, black jacket, a silver cross swinging at his throat. He stopped at the cave mouth and looked at her the way a buyer looks at a horse. Not afraid. Interested. "Word came down the mountain," he said. "About a goddess." His eyes moved over her bare thighs, the collar-shaped hollow of her throat, the half-built arch behind her. "I came up to see if it was true." "Kneel and find out." Damien Nocturne did not kneel. He walked past her into the cave, close enough that the back of his hand brushed her hip. The touch was light. Deliberate. Her breath caught before she could stop it, and he heard it, and he smiled without showing teeth. "You need a builder more than a worshipper," he said. He set his palm on the wet stone she had been shaping. "I can pull rock. I've done it before. But I don't kneel for a lair." She wanted to bite the smile off his mouth. She wanted the temple more. "Then pull rock," she said, "and I'll decide what you get after." They worked through the night. He hauled slabs from the back chamber. She fused them. By the time the sky turned pink, the cave had a doorway of black stone shot through with purple crystal, a basin where the pool had been, and a low wooden table he'd dragged from somewhere below, its legs already fitted with leather straps she had not asked about. The cave was a temple now. And the first person inside it had not knelt. Damien beckoned her over to the table and, with careful hands, helped position her wrists and ankles into the straps so she could keep steady while they worked. "Stay still," he murmured, "so I can finish the ritual and make you the true goddess I know you're meant to be." She obeyed.

Lilith lay on the wooden table while Damien tightened the last strap at her ankle. His fingers grazed the inside of her wrist on the way back up. Slow. Light. She felt her pulse jump under his thumb and hated that he felt it too. He leaned over her, close enough that his silver cross swung against her collarbone. "Ritual," he said, like the word amused him. He was not going to crown her. He was going to make her ask for something. She turned her head to the doorway. Her shadow dragon lay across the threshold, chin on its paws, purple eyes half open. It had not moved since he tied her down. That was the answer. If it thought he was a threat, it would already have his throat. It was letting her handle him because he was hers to handle. "Untie me," she said. "Say please." "Untie me, or she eats you." The dragon lifted its head. Damien looked at it, then at her bare stomach, then at the straps. He undid them one by one. He took his time on the wrists. When she sat up, he did not step back. She walked past him to the back chamber where the pool used to be. It was a basin now, ringed with black stone, purple light rising off the water. She looked down at herself and saw what he saw. Bare thighs. Bare arms. A scrap of black across her hips. A woman on a table, not a goddess on a throne. That was the problem. He kept touching her like an equal because she was dressed like one. She knelt at the basin and pressed both palms to the stone. "Obsidian," she said. "Lace. A collar. A crown." The water climbed her arms. It hardened cold against her skin. Black plates locked over her ribs and hips, cut low, cut sharp. Purple crystal ran down her thighs in thin veins. A high collar closed at her throat, points rising past her jaw. Last, a circle of black spikes settled on her hair. She stood. The regalia weighed nothing and everything. She turned. Damien was still by the table. His hand was halfway raised, ready to touch her wrist again. It stopped in the air. "Kneel," she said. He looked at her mouth. He looked at the dragon. He lowered his hand. He did not kneel. But he did not step closer either. He dropped his eyes first, and held them down. "Better," she said. It was not the crown she wanted. He had not given her that. He had given her the space between his old smile and his lowered eyes, and now she had to fill it before he took it back.

Damien kept his eyes on the floor. Lilith kept the crown on her head. The regalia held, but the silence did not. Down the mountain, the succubus she had collared was already walking into villages with her mouth open, ready to speak a name. Lilith did not have one to give her. No pilgrim could pray to a shape. Without a spoken name, the worship would scatter before it reached her, and the power feeding the crown would thin out. She walked past Damien to the back of the temple, where two thrones stood on a black dais. The larger throne waited for her, purple velvet stitched deep, spikes climbing its back. The smaller sat beside it in hopes that it could be Damien’s and him to claim to be by her side for all eternity. Above them, a ledge of black stone had been carved for the dragon to roost. The dragon padded in behind her and climbed to the ledge without being called. It settled, tail down the wall, and watched Damien. Lilith sat. She rested her hands flat on the arms of the throne. "Come here," she said. Damien came. He stopped at the foot of the dais. "You have read about me," she said. "Your brother came back from me and would not speak. You have wanted to be near me for a long time." "Yes." "Then tell me what they called me. The ones who came back. The ones who wrote it down." His jaw moved. He did not answer. "A name," she said. "Say it." "If I give it to you, you stop needing me." "If you don't, my worshippers pray to no one, and I fade. Do you wish to lose me before ever standing at my side and sharing my power with me? Do you wish to be bound to me?" He looked up at her then. He looked at the dragon on the ledge. He looked at her bare hand on the arm of the throne, close enough to touch. He did not reach. "Shadowflame," he said. "That's what my brother wrote in the margin. Not a title. A warning. Lilith Shadowflame. They whisper it before they knock." She did not move. She had chosen the second word herself, in private, long before anyone said it back to her. Hearing it in his mouth meant it had already left the mountain. It meant the succubus had a name to carry down. "Say it again," she said. "Lilith Shadowflame." The crown warmed against her scalp. The purple in the throne's crystals brightened by a shade. The dragon shifted on the ledge and let out a low sound that was not a growl. "Good," she said. Damien lowered his eyes again, but slower this time. "I gave you the name," he said. "You owe me your word." She did not answer. She had what she came for. The name was loose in the world now, and so was he, standing at the foot of her throne with a debt in his mouth she had not agreed to pay. As she simply replied "And you owe me your loyalty. Stand before me and claim your place at my side, so that it may fuel the devotion of my followers. If I give you the blessing you seek, you must kneel, swear yourself to me, and serve by my side forever." Damien gazed at her and dropped to his knees uttering simply "Your desire is my command, Goddess Shadowflame. You have me."

Damien stayed on his knees at the foot of the dais. The oath still hung in the air between them. Below the mountain, the succubus was already speaking Lilith's name in doorways. Worshippers would climb soon. They would expect a ceremony. Lilith had none. She knew the shape of a crowning only from what others had done to their gods. A song. A vow. A hand that placed the crown. She had no priest. She had no song. She had a follower on his knees and a crown already on her head, warmed by a name he had given her an hour ago. She stood. The dragon lifted its head on the ledge above the thrones. Lilith lifted the spiked crown off her scalp and set it on the arm of her throne. The purple in the throne's crystals dimmed a shade. Her scalp felt bare and cold. "Stand," she said. Damien stood. "You want my bite." "Yes." "Then you will earn it. When the worshippers come through that door, you will be the one who places this crown on my head. You will speak my name so they hear it. You will kneel after, in front of them, so they see what a follower looks like." His eyes moved to the crown on the arm of the throne. "You want me to crown you." "I want you to hand me to them. If you do it clean, I bite you after. If you fumble it, I don't." He was quiet. She watched his jaw. She watched his hands. "Say the words back," she said. "I lift the crown. I say your name. I set it on your head. I kneel." "In that order." "In that order." She sat back down. She left the crown on the arm of the throne, in reach of him, not her. That was the part that mattered. A goddess who placed her own crown was only a woman with a heavy hat. A goddess crowned by a devoted man was a goddess. The dragon made the low sound again. Not a growl. Something closer to attention. Down the mountain path, faint, she heard the first voices climbing. The succubus had done her work faster than expected. The villagers were already on the road. "They're coming," Damien said. "I hear them." He stepped up onto the dais without being told. He stopped beside the crown. He did not touch it yet. He looked at her once, the way a man looks at a door he has decided to open. "Goddess Shadowflame," he said, testing it in the empty hall. "Louder, when they're inside." "Yes." She sat straight. She set her hands flat on the arms of the throne. The ceremony existed now because she had said it did. The first footsteps reached the temple stairs.

Chapter 6

The first worshippers reached the top of the stairs and stopped in the doorway. Six of them. A woman with dirt on her sleeves. A boy who could not stop looking at the dragon on the ledge. Four others behind. They had climbed on the strength of a name a succubus had whispered into their doorways, and now they stood in a hall of purple stone and did not know where to put their hands. Damien lifted the crown from the arm of the throne. He held it at chest height so they could see it. He looked once at Lilith and then at the villagers. "Lilith Shadowflame," he said. Loud enough this time. He set the crown on her head. The spikes settled into the same warm places they had left. The purple in the throne's crystals brightened. Damien stepped down off the dais and knelt on the stone in front of the six of them, back to Lilith, so they saw the shape of it. They knelt. All six. The boy last, still watching the dragon. Lilith felt the name move through the room. She had a crown, a follower on his knees, and six mouths that had said her name on the climb up. It was not enough. They could leave this hall and forget by supper. She needed a mark that stayed on them. She stood. "Follow." She led them off the dais and down the short stair behind the thrones into the lower chamber. Purple water ran from a basin in the wall and pooled in a stone bowl in the floor. Crystals in the walls pulsed slow. The dragon padded after them and settled on the arch above the doorway. "Drink," she said. "One mouthful. Then you belong to me." The woman with the dirty sleeves went first. She knelt at the bowl, cupped her hands, and drank. She gasped once and pressed a hand to her chest. Lilith stepped closer. Through the thin cloth of the woman's shirt, a black shape was forming on the skin above her heart. A curl of shadowflame, the same shape as the spikes on Lilith's crown. It settled into the skin like an old scar. The woman looked up. Her eyes were wet and steady. "Goddess." The others drank. Each one gasped. Each one wore the mark under their shirt when they stood. The boy showed his openly, chin high. Lilith turned to Damien. He had followed and stood at the doorway, hand at his own chest. He had not drunk. His hand was flat over the place where the mark would go. "You already swore," she said. "You don't need the water." "I want it." She watched his face. Six marked worshippers behind her. A mountain of villages below with a succubus still walking through them. And in front of her, the follower who had given her name away, asking for a brand. "Then drink," she said. "And bring the next ones to the pool."

Chapter 7

The six new worshippers walked back down the mountain path with the mark under their shirts. Damien stayed. His hand was still flat on his chest where the shadowflame had settled. Lilith watched him from the doorway of the lower chamber. He had drunk. He had knelt. He had said her name out loud in a room that needed it. He was still just one of the marked, standing at her side like the rest would soon stand behind her. She wanted him higher than that. She had no ritual for it. She led him back up to the throne hall. The dragon watched from the arch above the door, tail hanging, eyes half shut. Lilith stopped at the wooden table by the far wall. The leather straps still hung where he had buckled her into them on the first night. She had made him unbuckle them then. She had not moved the table since. "Get on," she said. She put her hand flat on the wood. Damien did not move. "You." "No. You." She kept her voice even. "On your back. Wrists loose. I am not tying you." He climbed onto the table and lay down. His hair spread on the wood. He was watching her the way he had watched her the first time, like he had been reading about this for years and could not believe the page had turned. She stood over him. She did not know the words for what she wanted to do. There was no book. The succubus had not taught her. The pool did not work twice. She only knew what had already worked once on her — a slow touch on the inside of a wrist. She took his wrist and turned it. She ran one nail up the soft skin from the heel of his hand to the bend of his elbow. He made a sound in his throat and did not close his mouth after. "You planned this," she said. "Yes." "On me." "Yes." She leaned down. She set her teeth on the place where his pulse jumped hard beneath the skin. Not deep. Enough. His blood was hot and tasted like the purple water and something else that was only his. She held the bite and pushed. She did not know what she was pushing. Some of it went out of her and into him through her teeth. Her crown dimmed one shade. His chest lit under the shirt, the shadowflame there brightening from black to a live purple. She let go. She stepped back. Her mouth was wet. She felt lighter and colder. Damien sat up slow. The mark on his chest still glowed through the cloth. He looked at his own hand and flexed the fingers. Something in the room had shifted toward him a little and away from her. "You are bound to me," she said. "And I am bound to you. I did not mean the second part." He met her eyes and did not look down. He then smirked and simply said “Now your turn. Lay down.”

Lilith did not lay down. She stepped away from the table and looked past Damien at the far wall of the throne hall. The two thrones stood on the dais, hers tall and carved with claws, his lower beside it, both padded in purple. The dragon shifted on the ledge above them. The floor between the dais and the door was bare stone. Worshippers were coming up the mountain again by week's end. They would climb through a cave to reach her. That was the problem she could still solve tonight. "Get up," she said. "I need an altar." Damien sat up on the table. He did not argue. He rubbed the mark on his chest once and swung his legs down. "Where." "Center of the floor. Between the door and the dais. They should have to pass it to reach me." She walked to the middle of the stone and put her boot down where she wanted it. Damien came and stood on the other side of the spot. He looked at her hands, then at the floor, waiting. "I pulled the temple out of the rock the first night," she said. "I can pull this too. But it took less out of me then." She did not look at his chest when she said it. She did not have to. "Use me," he said. "You gave me some. Take some back for this." She thought about it. She did not want to owe him another thing. But the crown had dimmed a shade and had not brightened. She held out her hand. He put his palm against hers. His skin was warm. The shadowflame under his shirt lit again, slow. She pulled. Not blood. Something under it. He grunted and locked his knees. His mark dimmed. Her crown warmed on her head. She turned to the stone and pushed both hands down at the air above it. The floor cracked in a clean square. Black rock rose out of the break, slab by slab, stacking itself into a pillar as tall as her hip. Purple veins ran through it and lit from inside. A horned mark set itself into the front panel without her drawing it. The altar stopped growing. The room went quiet. She let go of his hand. He sat down hard on the edge of the dais and breathed through his nose. "It's done," he said. She walked around it once. It was the right height to kneel at. It was the right color. Anyone coming through the door would see it before they saw her, and then they would see her behind it, higher, on the throne. "You gave that up easy," she said. "I know what you'll do with it." She did not answer. She had a temple now. She also had a man on her floor who could refill her when she asked, and a bond she had not chosen tightening every time she pulled. Something inside her came alive. In that moment looking at Damien she felt drawn to him and knew their bond was for eternity. So she chose to stay with him for that night.

Chapter 9

Morning came gray through the cave mouth. Lilith woke on the dais beside Damien with the altar still glowing faint purple across the hall. She sat up and looked at it. The stone was ready. The worshippers were not. Six villagers had drunk from the pool and carried her mark on their chests, but none of them knew what to do at an altar. They would climb the path today and stand there confused, and confusion in front of a goddess was worse than absence. She nudged Damien with her boot. He opened his eyes. "Get the offering ready," she said. "Fruit, wine, sweets. Candles around the rim. Put it on the altar before they get here." "Then what." "Then you show them how to feed me." He sat up. "Feed you how." "Kneel. Take a piece. Hold it up. Put it in my mouth. Drink from the cup and bring it to my lips. They watch you, then they copy." He did not answer for a moment. Then he nodded and stood. He worked fast. He came back with a wide silver bowl draped in black cloth. He arranged pomegranates and dark cakes and cherries around a tall chased cup, and set small candles at the rim and lit each one. He set the bowl on the obsidian slab. The purple veins in the altar brightened under it. The villagers arrived at midday. Six of them, the same six, their marks showing at their collars. They stopped inside the door when they saw the altar. One reached toward the fruit. Another pulled his hand back. Lilith sat on her throne. The dragon shifted on its ledge and watched them without lifting its head. Damien walked down from the dais and stood at the altar. He did not speak. He knelt. He picked up a pomegranate half, split it further with his thumbs, and climbed the three steps to her. He held it up. She opened her mouth. He set a seed on her tongue. He went back down. He lifted the cup in both hands, climbed again, and tilted it at her lips. She drank. Wine ran at the corner of her mouth. He caught it with his thumb without asking and wiped it clean. The six were watching now. One knelt first. Then the others. They came forward one at a time. They copied him. Fruit. Cup. Lips. Back down the steps. When the last one stepped away her crown was hot on her head. Brighter than it had been in days. The bond mark on Damien's chest had dimmed a shade to match. She looked at him standing at the foot of the dais with wine on his thumb and understood the shape of it. He had fed her in front of them. They had learned by watching him. Her worship now ran through his hands first.

The six villagers filed out at dusk. Lilith watched them go down the path and knew six was not enough. The altar had glowed under their hands, but the hall around them had felt empty. A goddess crowned before six looked like a woman crowned before six. She needed the mountain crowded. She turned to Damien on the dais step. "The succubus I sent down. She's been in the villages for weeks. Where are the rest?" "Word travels slow." "Word travels as fast as fear." She stood. Her crown was warm but not bright. "Six climbed. Hundreds heard my name. Something is holding them at the bottom." She crossed to the basin and pulled the collared succubus to her through the bond. The air darkened at the doorway. The succubus stepped out of it, horns first, bare shoulders catching candlelight, the silver collar snug at her throat. "You called," the succubus said. "Six came. Why not sixty." The succubus tilted her head. "They're afraid of the climb. They hear the mark is permanent. They want to see one of their own come back down first and speak." Lilith looked at the six chest-marks receding down the path in her mind. None of them would come back tonight. None had been told to. "Then give them one," she said. She turned to Damien. "Go down with her. Take one of the marked with you if you can catch him on the path. Stand in the square. Show them your mark. Say my name. Bring the next wave up before the moon is full." Damien's jaw set. "You want me off the mountain." "I want you useful off it." She stepped close and put two fingers on the shadowflame at his chest. Heat moved under her hand. "I can pull from this wherever you stand. Distance doesn't cut it." He held still under her touch. "And if they won't come." "They'll come for you. You're the one who feeds me. They saw it." He looked at the succubus. She smiled at him with no warmth. He looked back at Lilith. "Alright," he said. He left with the succubus an hour later. Lilith stood at the cave mouth and watched two shapes go down the switchbacks until the dark took them. The dragon settled on its ledge above the empty second throne and made a low sound she chose to read as agreement. She went back inside. The altar's purple veins pulsed once when she passed. She sat on her throne alone and pressed her palm to the armrest where her crown had once rested during the first ceremony. The hall was quiet. Her conduit was gone. Her power source was walking down a mountain in the dark with a bound thing beside him. She had solved the problem of the empty temple by sending away the one person who filled it. She waited to feel him at the edge of the bond, and felt him grow fainter with every step.

Lilith sat on her throne through the night and felt Damien fade to a coal at the edge of her mind. By dawn the coal was still warm, but she could not see through it. She wanted a window. There was none. She had never built one. A goddess with hundreds of eyes below her and no way to use them was a goddess with none. She tried to pull harder from the mark. The bond gave her heat, not sight. She saw the throne hall, the altar, the empty second throne. She did not see him. The dragon shifted on its ledge and watched her fail. She stood and paced the dais. Something under her ribs pulled toward the path. She named it worry, then discarded that. She named it want. That fit worse and truer. She wanted him back in the room. Not for the altar. For her. The thought sat in her mouth like a stone she could not spit out. She reached down the collar's leash instead. The succubus answered before she finished the pull, stepping out of the dark near the altar with her horns catching the purple light. Lace at her hips. Silver at her throat. She had climbed the mountain in the time it took Lilith to decide to summon her. "Where is he," Lilith said. "Two switchbacks down. Coming up. Twenty behind him." Twenty. The number should have filled her. It did not. She kept looking past the succubus at the doorway. She made her choice then, because she hated the feeling and would not sit inside it. "On the table," she said. She pointed to the strapped wooden table by the wall. "Lie down." The succubus obeyed. Lilith climbed up beside her and let the succubus's hand run along her thigh. She kept her eyes on the doorway. She heard boots on stone before she saw him. Damien came in with the mark bright on his chest and stopped at the altar. He looked at the table. He looked at the succubus's hand on Lilith's leg. His face did not move. His mark did. It flared once, hot enough that Lilith felt it through the bond like a slap. He crossed the hall in six strides. "Out," he said to the succubus. She was gone before he finished the word. He put his hands under Lilith's shoulders and laid her flat on the table. He leaned over her. "You are mine as I am yours," he said. "No one but me touches you." She laughed. It came out small and pleased and not like her. "Say it again." He did. She kept smiling under him. The yearning was gone. Something heavier had taken its place, and it had his name on it, and she did not know yet what it would cost her.

Damien still had his hands on Lilith's shoulders when she sat up under him. The table's straps hung loose at her hips. She pushed his chest until he stepped back. Twenty villagers were climbing the path. She heard the succubus at the door, waiting. The throne hall was bare between altar and dais. A crowned goddess needed more than a stone slab and an empty floor. She needed a room that made knees bend before mouths opened. "They will be here soon," she said. "The hall is not enough." Damien looked at the altar, then at her. "What do you want." "A bed. Where they can see what obedience looks like." She swung off the table. Her shadow dragon lifted its head on the ledge above the throne. "You will lie on it. I will show them how a follower is used." She called the succubus in with a pull on the collar's leash. The succubus came through the arch and stopped beside the altar, lace at her hips, silver at her throat, waiting for the order. Lilith drew from Damien's mark. The heat crossed the room and pooled in the floor in front of the dais. Obsidian rose out of the stone in spires. Carved panels. A tall pointed headboard. The frame settled dark and heavy. Rope coiled along the posts in purple and red. Straps hung from the headboard. A blindfold. Small toys scattered across the covers where she wanted them scattered. Damien's mark dimmed. He caught the post to steady himself. He did not complain. "On it," she said. He climbed onto the bed and lay back. She fixed a strap around one of his wrists and left the other loose so he could refuse if he chose to. He did not choose to. The succubus knelt at the foot of the bed where Lilith pointed. Boots on stone. The first villagers reached the arch and stopped. Lilith stood between the altar and the bed with her crown catching the purple light. She let them see Damien on the covers with the mark bright on his chest, the succubus on her knees, the toys within reach. She let them see her hand on Damien's jaw. "This is what it looks like to belong to me," she said. "Come closer." They came closer. All twenty. Some knelt at the altar before they were told. Others stared at the bed and did not remember to breathe. The succubus watched Lilith's face for the next order. The hall was no longer bare. The spectacle held them. Lilith felt the pull of new eyes on her skin, more than she had ever carried at once. Then she felt Damien's mark under her fingers. It was cooler than before. She had spent too much of him to build the room. He turned his head on the pillow and met her eyes. He did not look away. He looked like someone who knew he had just paid for something, and had not yet decided the price.

Damien's mark stayed cool under Lilith's hand. The twenty villagers watched the bed and waited for more. She had spent too much of him to build the frame, and now they wanted the show she had promised. If she pulled again, she would break him in front of them. If she gave them nothing, the coronation crowd would shrink before it grew. She looked at the toys scattered on the covers. Small carved things. Purple and pink. She had shaped them out of stone and cloth without thinking, filler for the spectacle. They were hers. They were empty. She turned her back to the villagers and bent over the bed as if adjusting a strap. Her fingers closed around one of the toys. She pushed her own power into it. Not Damien's. Hers. The small weight warmed under her palm. She did the same to the next, and the next, until six of them hummed against her skin. Her knees felt the cost. She locked them and did not sway. "Watch," she said to the room. She climbed onto the bed beside Damien. She freed his loose wrist and put the first toy in his hand. She pressed his palm to her own throat, then to her ribs, then lower. Each place the toy touched, her power slid out of it and into him through the mark. His color came back. His breath deepened. The villagers thought they were watching her use him. They were watching her feed him. Damien's eyes changed. He felt it. He knew what she was doing and did not say it. He turned the toy in his hand and dragged it along her collarbone himself. The mark on his chest brightened. He was not weak anymore. He was warm under her. The succubus at the foot of the bed watched the mark brighten and tilted her head. She had been watching Lilith's power for a long time. She knew the direction it usually moved. She saw it move the other way now. Lilith rolled off the bed and stood before the villagers with her crown steady. "Kneel," she said. They knelt. All twenty. The altar between them filled with the sound of it. She had held the room. She had kept Damien standing. She had done it by pouring herself into him in front of everyone and calling it worship. Damien sat up on the bed. He looked at his own hand. He looked at her. He was stronger than he had been an hour ago. Stronger than he had been yesterday. She could feel it in the mark like a second pulse, no longer smaller than hers. The succubus smiled at the floor. Lilith saw it and understood. She had solved the hour. She had also given Damien something she could not take back.

The villagers stayed on their knees. Damien sat on the edge of the bed with his color high and his mark burning bright under his shirt. Lilith felt her own power thinner than an hour ago. She needed a moment that belonged to her again, one the room would remember as hers, not his. She turned to the alcove behind the dais and lifted out the relic she had kept wrapped since her ascension. She carried it to the altar and set it down. The dark metal caught the torchlight. Purple stones woke inside it. The kneeling villagers looked up and did not move. Damien watched her hands. "Bring her," Lilith said. The succubus came forward without waiting for the collar to pull. She stopped at the foot of the bed. Her eyes went to the relic and stayed there. "Onto the bed," Lilith said. "On your back." The succubus climbed up between the ropes and the scattered toys. She lay down under the carved spires. Her horns pressed the pillow. Her hands stayed open at her sides. She had smiled at the floor an hour ago when Damien grew stronger. She did not smile now. Lilith picked up the relic and held it out to Damien. He stood. He took the other end. The metal ran hot between them at once, drawing on both marks together instead of one. "Together," she said, low enough that only he heard. "Into her. Not into me. Not into you." He understood. He always understood too fast now. They knelt over the succubus on the bed. Lilith set the point of the relic against the silver collar at the succubus's throat. Damien laid his hand over Lilith's. They pushed. The relic bit. The succubus arched once and did not cry out. Power moved. Lilith felt it leave the succubus in a long steady pull, thinner than shadowflame, older. It ran up the relic and split. Half sank into Damien's mark. Half sank into hers. Her knees stopped shaking. Her crown warmed on her hair. Beside her, Damien drew a breath that filled him to the shoulders. The succubus went quiet under them. Her eyes stayed open. The collar dulled from silver to lead. She would obey now without being told. There was not enough of her left to refuse. Below the dais, the twenty villagers pressed their foreheads to the stone. Shadowflame rolled out of the altar and along the floor in a low purple tide. It reached the kneelers and washed over their hands. Voices started, ragged, then together. Her name. Over and over. Lilith stood. Damien stood with her. His mark pulsed in time with hers again, matched, not larger. She had drawn them level in one stroke and spent the succubus to do it. The succubus lay still on the bed. Lilith had her balance back. She had also used up the servant who had carried her name down the mountain. But that is ok. In this moment of her and Damien coming together they created their future heir, bonded for eternity. Damien knew deep inside as his power grew in public she would rein supreme him the follower but behind closed doors with just Lilith and him his dominance would rein as they continued to create more heirs. And for that their love deepend.

By dawn the throne hall was full and the mountain path was still bringing more. Lilith stood at her dais and counted. Twenty at the altar. Forty behind them, pressed shoulder to shoulder. Another line waited outside the doors, kneeling in the wet grass. The succubus lay quiet on the bed where they had left her. Damien stood at Lilith's right, mark bright, breath steady. She could hear the far-back rows shifting. People who waited too long walked away. She had seen it in the villages when she was still hunting for a name. "They won't hold," Damien said. He kept his voice low. "The back ones are already looking at the trees." Lilith knew it. The throne hall had been carved for her, not for a crowd. The altar sat between the doors and her dais, and the doors were the choke point. She needed a room that swallowed people instead of spitting them out. She needed it before the coronation, and the coronation was today. She stepped down from the dais. She laid her palm on Damien's chest, over the mark, and drew. Heat climbed her arm. His jaw set. He did not pull away. "Walk with me," she said. They crossed the altar together. She lifted the offering bowl in one hand as she passed, cup and pomegranates and small dark cakes, and carried it out the doors. The kneelers on the grass raised their faces. Lilith kept walking, past them, to the flat shelf of rock below the temple where the mountain leveled out. She set the bowl down. She drew again from Damien's mark, deeper this time, and pushed the power into the ground. Obsidian split up out of the stone. It rose in ribs, then arches, then a high pointed front with tall narrow windows. Purple glass filled the windows as the stone climbed. The doors formed last, black and gold, wide enough for ten to walk through together. A vast gothic hall stood where the shelf had been, big enough for every worshipper on the mountain and the ones still climbing. Damien was pale. He stayed on his feet. "Move the altar," Lilith said. "Inside. Center aisle." He raised his hand. The obsidian altar tore free of the throne hall floor behind them and slid across the grass on its own weight. It settled in the new hall's center. Above it, Lilith called a column of purple fire that fell like water from the vaulted ceiling and did not touch the stone below. The waiting crowd stood up on their own. No one had to tell them to come inside. Lilith walked up the aisle with Damien behind her. Her throne hall was empty now. Her coronation had a room. She had spent more of him to build it, and every worshipper on the mountain was already walking through the doors toward her. But she grabbed Damien as they approached, whispered to him, "Stay strong and be ready, as I am giving you immortality, my one secret." She drew him close and bit his neck, drinking from him and giving him immortality in one fast movement. Her last gift she held onto for one she didn’t even know existed until him.

Damien stiffened against her mouth. Lilith felt his pulse jump under her teeth, then slow. She pulled back. A thin line of her own dark power hung between her lip and his throat before it sank into him. The worshippers were already flooding the new hall behind them. She had no words prepared. No rite written. She had a bite, and a follower marked from a bite before, and now a second bite that had done something bigger. She wiped her mouth with her thumb. Damien touched his neck. The puncture was already closing. "Walk," she said. "Head up. If they see you falter, they'll think I failed." "You didn't fail." He said it plainly. His color was coming back faster than it should. She led him up the center aisle. The obsidian altar stood ahead under the falling column of purple fire. The offering bowl sat on it, cup and pomegranates and dark cakes she had carried out herself. The crowd went quiet in rows as she passed. She counted heads without meaning to. Over a hundred now. She stopped at the altar and turned to face them. Damien stopped one step behind her, at her right. She had nothing prepared. So she used what had just happened. "You came for a coronation," she said. Her voice carried up the arches. "You saw the first rite of it on the threshold. I marked my chosen with my own power. I gave him what I have never given. I gave him time without end." A sound moved through the hall. Not a cheer. Something lower. Damien lifted his chin. The mark on his chest showed dark through his shirt. "This is the pattern," she said. "He kneels first. Then you." Damien knelt at the altar without being told. He lifted the cup from the bowl and held it up to her. She took it. She drank. She handed it back. He drank after her. The nearest worshippers watched every motion the way people watch a lock being opened. She set her palm on his head. "Rise." He rose. He turned to face the hall beside her, not behind her. She noted it and did not correct it. "Come forward," she said to the crowd. "One row at a time. Kneel at the altar. He will show you." The first row came. Damien guided their hands to the bowl. Lilith stood over the altar and let them see her. The rite she had invented in a panic was already becoming a thing they would repeat. Her shadow dragon slid down from the rafters and coiled at the altar's base. It bared its teeth at the front row, then settled. She had bought her coronation with a secret she had meant to keep. Damien stood at her side, stronger than before, and closer to level than any follower should be.

The last row of worshippers rose from the altar and moved to the walls to make room for the next. Lilith kept her hand on the obsidian edge and watched them find their places under the arches. None of them looked at Damien and questioned why he stood level with her. None of them looked at her and questioned why a man stood level with her at all. That was the problem she had to solve before this night ended. Damien leaned close. "They're waiting for you to speak again." "I know." She kept her voice low. "They think you're part of the rite. They don't know what you are." "What am I." "Closer to me than any of them will ever get." She looked at him. "If they understood that, they'd stop kneeling." He didn't answer. His hand brushed the inside of her wrist, light, the way he had touched her the first time. She felt the pull of her own power sitting under his skin. She could take it back tonight in front of all of them and end the problem. She could strip him down to a marked follower again and stand alone on the dais. She didn't. She stepped away from him and walked to the front of the altar. The purple fire fell behind her in a steady column. She raised both hands. "Look at him," she said. The hall turned. Damien stood where she had left him, one hand still on the altar's rim. "He was marked before you were. He was bitten before you were. Tonight I gave him a second bite and made him deathless. He stands where he stands because I put him there." She let that settle. "When you kneel to him at this altar, you kneel to me. When he lifts the cup, my hand lifts it. He is the shape my power takes when it walks." A murmur moved through the rows. She watched faces. She watched them accept it. A man in the third row pressed his palm to his marked chest and bowed his head toward Damien without being told. It worked. She felt it work the way she felt the altar draw. The story she had just told them slid into place over the truth and covered it. Damien's mouth moved. Not quite a smile. He inclined his head to her, the smallest bow, and the front row copied him. She had kept her secret. She had kept her worshippers. The cost was a sentence she could never take back: he is the shape my power takes when it walks. She had named him her vessel in front of a hundred mouths that would carry the words down the mountain by morning. Every prayer they spoke from now on would run through him before it reached her. Her shadow dragon lifted its head at the altar's base and looked at Damien for a long moment before it looked at her.

The last worshipper filed out of the new hall as dawn pressed at the high windows. Lilith watched them go and felt the pull of the sentence she had spoken over them. Every prayer would find Damien first now. She needed to know what he did with that weight when no one was watching. She turned to him at the altar and told him to follow her. She led him down the back stair to the private sanctum she kept below the hall. Candles burned in the wall brackets. A tall mushroom glowed in the corner where she had planted it for light that did not need tending. The chamber bed stood against the far wall, dark wood carved into spires, ropes and straps draped over the posts, a few scattered keepsakes on the coverlet from a night she had not yet finished. Her shadow dragon padded in behind them and settled by the door. "Sit," she said. Damien sat on the edge of the bed. He watched her the way he had watched her the first night in the cave, before he had any mark at all. She stood in front of him. "I named you my vessel. I can't take it back. Every word they say to me now goes through you first." "I know." "Then I need to know what stops you." "Nothing stops me." She went still. "Say that again." "Nothing stops me from giving it to you." He held out his wrist, mark up. "Take what you want. My soul is yours. I'm not afraid of you." She had wanted him to flinch. She had wanted a crack to press her thumb into. He gave her none. She climbed onto the bed and pushed him back against the pillows. She lay down beside him and put her hand flat on his chest, over the shadowflame. She drew. Power came up under her palm. It came easier than it ever had from him. He did not fight the pull. He fed it to her. She felt her strength rise and felt his rise with it, the way water rises in two joined cups. "You feel that," she said. "Yes." "When I pull, you grow." "Yes." “I have only one rule I hope u accept” he said. “In front of others i obey you as a follower should. Punish me discipline me anything do it. Behind closed doors when it is only us, u obey me when we get to play our game. Deal?” “Deal.” She said. She kept her hand there. She could stop. She did not stop. She lay with him until the candles burned low and her breathing matched his. The dragon watched from the door and did not growl once.

Lilith woke with her hand still on Damien's chest. The candles had burned to stubs. The glowing mushroom in the corner threw soft light on the carved bed. Her dragon slept across the door. She lay there and listened to Damien breathe and felt the thing inside her that had made her stay. It told her to trust him. She had spent years teaching herself not to listen to a voice like that. This morning she listened. She told him what the deal meant to her. Not the private half. The private half was easy. The hard part was keeping it private. She said the worshippers below expected a goddess who bent for no one. If any of them saw her soften, saw her wait for his nod, the crown she had built out of their fear would crack. She needed him to help her hold the line in public. He said he would. They went up the back stair to the hall together. The morning line had already formed at the altar. She took her place on the dais. Damien stood at her right, one step down, hands folded. She kept her chin up. She gave orders in her flat goddess voice. He obeyed each one without pause. It worked. It worked for an hour. The seventh worshipper knelt with a bowl of salt. He offered it up to Damien first, the way the new rite required. Damien took the bowl. He turned to bring it to her. She reached for it. Their fingers touched on the rim. He drew a slow line across the inside of her wrist with his thumb. It was the same touch he had planned in the cave a lifetime ago. Her breath caught. Her knees loosened. She lowered her eyes to the bowl before she raised them to the hall. When she looked up, the worshipper was staring at her wrist. Then at her face. Then at Damien. He set his forehead to the floor fast, but he had seen. Behind him, two others in the line had lifted their heads. They had seen too. She finished the rite. She did not look at Damien again until the hall emptied. Then she walked him down the back stair to the sanctum and shut the door. The dragon slid in behind them and did not growl. "They saw," she said. "I know." "You did that on purpose." "Yes." She waited for the anger. It did not come. The voice inside her said he had done it because she had let him. She had trusted him with the line and he had stepped across it while she watched. She sat on the edge of the bed. She put her hands flat on her knees. "Then I have to answer it," she said. "In front of them. Tomorrow." He nodded. She did not know yet what the answer would be.

Lilith did not sleep. She sat on the edge of the carved bed and worked out what the worshippers had seen and what she could turn it into. A soft touch could not be undone. But a soft touch could be renamed. If she gave it a rite, the gossip stopped being gossip. It became scripture. She woke Damien before dawn. She told him what she wanted. He listened without interrupting, then nodded once. "You'll be the first to swear it," she said. "Yes." "After that, every mark drinks the oath before they climb the stair. No tongue leaves this mountain loose again." "Yes." She went to the sanctum and pulled the knotted cord bundle from its niche. It was old work, older than the temple, layered with sigils and tassels and small stamped disks. She had never used it. She had been saving it for something she could not name until now. She carried it up to the hall herself. By the time the worshippers filed in, the altar between the door and the dais had been dressed. A silver cup stood on it. Around the cup she had set the ritual bundle, cords fanned out, disks facing up. The dragon lay on the top step of the dais and watched the line. She stood behind the altar. Damien stood in front of it, on the worshippers' side. He knelt. "What you saw at this altar yesterday," she said, "was the first sign of a rite I had not yet named. I name it now." She lifted the cup. She spoke the oath plainly so every mark could repeat it. To carry what happened in this hall no farther than this hall. To speak of the goddess only in the words she gave them. To keep her private face private, on pain of losing the mark on their chest and the breath in their lungs. She pressed Damien's palm flat to the cords. She cut his thumb with her nail and let one drop fall on the center disk. The disk drank it. A low hum rose from the bundle and settled in the stone. "Drink," she said. He drank. She refilled the cup and held it out to the first worshipper in line. He came forward with his eyes down. He drank. The shadowflame on his chest brightened for a breath, then dimmed. He walked out changed. The next one came. Then the next. It took most of the morning. No one broke the line. When the hall emptied she set the cup down. Her hand was steady. The gossip was sealed. The rite was hers now, and Damien's touch had become the thing that founded it. The dragon lifted its head. Damien was still kneeling on the worshippers' side of the altar. He had not risen. He was waiting for her to tell him he could. In front of her, on the disks, his blood was still wet, and she understood she had just built the ritual around him.

The hall was empty of worshippers, but Lilith did not let Damien rise. His blood was still wet on the disks. The dragon watched him from the top step. She watched him from behind the altar. The rite was sealed, but the lesson inside it was not. If she let him stand now, the next mark to break a ritual would think a bent knee bought forgiveness. She would not have that. "Stand," she said. He stood. His knees were stiff. He did not rub them. "Walk to the side chamber. The table is there. Lie down on it." His eyes moved to her once, checking. She gave him nothing back. He walked. She followed. The table waited against the far wall, straps loose, small implements set out on the wood. She had built it for their private lesson. Today it would serve a public one. She opened the door behind her and called the marks back inside. They filed in without speaking, still bound by the oath they had drunk. She placed them in a half circle around the table. "You saw him touch me yesterday," she said. "You have sworn not to carry the story. You have not sworn to forget it. Watch instead." Damien lay flat. She buckled the strap across his chest herself. Then the wrists. Then the ankles. He let her. He did not speak. "When a mark crosses a line at this altar," she told the half circle, "this is where he answers for it. Not in the dark. Here. In front of you." She picked up the ornate relic from the shelf beside the table. She had shaped it for pleasure once. She used it now for the other edge of that same tool. She pressed it against him slowly. He flinched. She held it there until his breath broke. Then she moved it again. She did not rush. She let the worshippers see every second of it. She let them see him not beg. She let them see her not smile. She drew a thread of power from his mark to sharpen what he felt and pulled her own hand back cool. When his shirt was wet through, she stopped. She unbuckled the ankles first, then the wrists, then the chest. He did not sit up until she nodded. "This is the price of a private hand in a public rite," she said to the half circle. "He paid it. You will not have to." They bowed and left without a word. Alone with him, she set the relic down. His hands shook once and stopped. He looked at her with something steadier than fear. He had taken it and come out closer to her, not farther. She had meant to make him smaller in front of them. Instead she had made him the one who could bear what no other mark could. The lesson had landed. He then whispered to her “ Do not forget ritual sanctum. My turn sweetheart. “ He grinned. Lilith blushed.
