Lillith Amethys's dream is awakening the dormant crystal heart buried beneath Thimblewhip to restore magic to a fading land..
Lillith Amethys crouched behind a broken pillar and counted the beast's steps. Somewhere under this ruined ground lay a dormant crystal heart. Wake it, and magic would return to Thimblewhip, where the wells ran dry and the fields died gray. Lillith had crossed a dead land to reach this place. Now a monster stood in the way. The thing was a chimera built from crystal. Two heads, both sharp with faceted teeth. Its blue-and-purple body threw light across the rubble. It swung its heads side to side, hunting. Anything that moved near the ruin, it hunted. Lillith had watched it kill a stray dog at dawn. One snap. That was all. Lillith pressed a hand flat to the stone. Crystalmancy answered. The ground here was laced with old crystal veins, buried and thin. Lillith felt them hum under the dirt. The chimera was crystal too. That meant it could be reached. A cold voice cut across the ruin. "You'll only annoy it." Lillith turned. A woman in a dark, silver-marked coat stepped between the fallen stones. Silver hair pulled tight. Purple eyes like polished glass. A gold crystal hung at her throat. Lillith knew her at once. Sylara Vex. The scholar who had chased the same buried heart for years, and who wanted it not to heal the land but to own it. "You want it awake as much as I do," Lillith said. Sylara smiled without warmth. "I want it mine. You want it wasted on farmers." She tilted her head toward the beast. "But neither of us digs while that hunts. So. After you." The chimera's two heads snapped toward the voices. It charged. Lillith didn't run. Lillith drove both hands into the ground and pulled at the buried veins. Crystal ripped up through the dirt in a jagged wall. The chimera hit it and shattered the top, but its claws tangled in the spikes. It shrieked, pinned. "Now the veins," Lillith breathed. The monster was crystal, and crystal answered crystal. Lillith reached past its faceted hide and grabbed the light inside it. Then Lillith squeezed. The chimera cracked from the inside out. Both heads seized. Lines of white split its neck, its chest, its legs. It gave one last screech and burst apart. Shards rained across the stone and went dark. Silence. Dust settled. Lillith knelt, shaking, hands raw. Slow clapping. Sylara stood at the edge of the wreckage, unhurt, unbothered. She had let Lillith spend every scrap of strength on the fight. "Well done," Sylara said. She stepped over a shard and walked toward the cleared center of the ruin. "You opened the path. I'll take it from here." Lillith reached for the veins again and felt only ash. Nothing left to pull. The beast was dead. The site was open at last. And Sylara was already walking toward the buried heart, while Lillith could barely stand.
The ground split open where the chimera had died. Lillith crawled to the edge and looked down. A pit dropped into the dark, and at its bottom lay the crystal heart. It was the size of a boulder, faceted and raw. Light spilled out of it in violent pulses. Each pulse cracked the stone around it. This was the buried heart Lillith had crossed a dead land to reach. Wake it, and magic returned to Thimblewhip. But the thing bled wild energy. It would burn any bare hand that touched it to ash. Sylara stopped at the pit's rim. She stared down at the pulsing heart, and for once her smooth face went still. "So the old texts were right. It's unstable." Her voice stayed cold, but her feet did not move. "Touch that and it kills you. I intend to have it. I do not intend to die for it." Lillith understood. Sylara had let the chimera drain them so she could seize the prize untouched. Now the prize would kill whoever reached first. Sylara wanted Lillith to be that hand. "After you," Sylara said, echoing her own words from the fight. Lillith pressed a palm to the broken ground. The crystal veins were burned to ash where the chimera had died, but deeper down, past that ruin, older veins still hummed. Lillith reached for them. The strain made purple eyes water. Slowly, Lillith drew a thin thread of crystal up through the dirt. It wound down the pit wall toward the heart like a root seeking water. The thread touched the heart's edge. Light screamed up its length. Lillith did not let go. Instead, Lillith spread the energy through the veins below, feeding the wild pulse into the whole sleeping web of crystal under Thimblewhip. The heart's beat slowed. The violent flashes softened to a steady glow. The stone stopped cracking. "You're grounding it," Sylara breathed. She dropped to a crouch, hungry now. "Move aside. It's tame. I'll take it." "It isn't tame," Lillith said. "It's mine to hold." Lillith yanked the last of the veins tight. Far off, a low sound rolled through the earth. Something ancient stirred. A skeletal dragonfly with crystal wings darted up from the pit and landed on Lillith's shoulder, its facets bright. Lillith's small companion had felt the heart wake too. The land itself was answering. Sylara lunged for the pit. Lillith slapped a hand down and threw up a spike of crystal between the rival and the heart. Sylara stumbled back, snarling. "You've only started something you can't finish," Sylara hissed. She was right. The heart pulsed steady now, safe to guard but not yet awake. Deep below, the stirring grew louder. Whatever slept down there was rising. Lillith held the calmed heart in one shaking hand and knew the true guardian had not yet shown itself.
