Lily Nightingale had one thing her parents left behind, and she wasn't allowed to touch it. The matron kept it locked in the records room, high in the old stone care home where children never went. Lily was eight, with raven hair and green eyes, and she wanted only one answer in the world: why had her mother given her away? The paper in that room was the only trail she had. She told her best friend, Oliver, in the garden after supper. He was the blonde boy who followed her everywhere, hands always jammed in his coat pockets. "The records room," he said. "That door's always locked." "Not when Matron cleans it on Sundays," Lily said. "It's Sunday." They crept up the back stairs. Her tabby kitten padded after them, tail high. The records room door stood open a crack. Inside, the matron knelt beside a low cabinet, her grey bun loose, wire spectacles slipping down her nose. Lily froze. Oliver tugged her sleeve to run. But the matron looked up and smiled, the same warm smile she gave every child. "I wondered when you'd come looking," she said. "Come in, child. Both of you." Lily's heart pounded. "You knew?" "I've known for years." The matron opened a small drawer. She lifted out a folded paper, soft and yellowed at the edges. "Your mother left this with you. I kept it safe until you were old enough to understand it." Lily reached out with both hands. The paper trembled open. Dark blue writing filled the page, lines that rhymed like a song. At the bottom it read: With love, Mama. "It's a lullaby," Oliver whispered, peering over her shoulder. Lily read the gentle lines about fireflies and silver streams, about three tall pines standing in a row. The words were sweet, but they didn't feel like just a song. They felt like directions. "Matron," she said slowly. "These aren't only words. They're a map. She hid a path in it." The matron's smile faded into something sadder. "I always wondered," she said. "I could never puzzle it out. Perhaps it was meant for you to solve, not me." Lily pressed the paper to her chest. The kitten rubbed against her ankles. For the first time, the question that had followed her all her life had a shape. Her mother hadn't left nothing. She had left a trail. "The fireflies," Lily said. "The three pines. Those are real places. If I follow them, they lead somewhere." Oliver's eyes went wide. "Outside the home? We've never been past the gate." The matron set a gentle hand on Lily's shoulder. "Keep it hidden," she said. "And be careful. A map only helps those brave enough to walk it." Lily folded the lullaby and slipped it into her pocket. The locked door was no longer her problem. Now she had the riddle, and the riddle pointed away from the only home she'd ever known.

Chapter 2

Lily had followed the lullaby all afternoon, past the gate and into the woods. She found the silver stream and traced it, just as the song said. But the sun dropped fast behind the hills. Now the trees stood black around her, and the path was gone. Her tabby kitten pressed against her leg, mewing. Oliver stumbled behind her, hands deep in his coat pockets. "We're lost," Oliver whispered. "I can't see the stream anymore." Lily pulled the lullaby from her pocket. The dark blue words had vanished into shadow. She could not read a single line. Fear climbed her throat. Then a howl split the night, long and cold. A figure hovered between the trees. It wore a hood, and two red eyes burned inside it. The kitten hissed and arched its back. Lily knew, somehow, that it had watched her for a long time. It had waited outside the orphanage walls. Now she had walked out, and it had come. "Lily," it said. The voice was flat and low. "I waited. I was there the night you came. I wait no more." Oliver grabbed Lily's sleeve and pulled her back. The figure drifted closer, hands reaching from its sleeves. Lily's feet caught on a root. She fell hard into cold leaves. The red eyes slid above her. "Run," she told Oliver. He didn't run. He stayed. Lily's hand touched something warm in the dirt. A flower. Its petals glowed, red and gold and blue, shining like soft fire in the dark. She tore it from the ground and held it up. The figure flinched. The red eyes pulled back. "The light," it hissed. "No. No light." Lily climbed to her knees and pushed the glowing rose toward it. The figure shrank between the trees. It could not cross into the glow. It hovered at the edge, howling, trapped behind the shine. "I come back," it said. "In the dark, I come back." Then it folded into the shadows and was gone. Oliver crouched beside Lily, shaking. The rose lit both their faces. The kitten crept out from under a bush and climbed into Lily's lap. "What was that thing?" Oliver breathed. "It knew my name," Lily said. "It said it was there when I was born." She looked at the rose. Its glow spread a small circle of light on the forest floor. By that light, she could see the path again. She could see the three tall pines ahead, black against the sky. Lily stood. She held the rose before her like a lantern. The dark had hidden the way, and now she had a light to follow it. "Stay close," she told Oliver. "It only comes in the dark. As long as this glows, we keep walking." They stepped toward the pines. Behind them, somewhere in the black trees, the howl rose again.
