Liora Featherwood's dream is blending in with the owlbears and becoming one of them.
Liora Featherwood lumbered through the Evergreen Forest in her owlbear form, sniffing her own thick fur and frowning. She still smelled like dried lavender and old spellbook ink. To truly become one of the owlbears, she had to stop smelling like a druid. She spotted a towering tree, half redwood and half pine, its bark sticky with deep amber sap. Liora rubbed her shoulders and belly against the rough trunk. Pine resin coated her feathers, drowning the herb scent under sharp forest tang. Further on, she found a fallen log scratched deep with claw marks. She sniffed it carefully. This was a border, a warning sign carved by big paws. Liora swallowed her nerves and stepped politely around it instead of over it. Beyond the log rose a cave tucked into a vine-draped cliff, wildflowers spilling from its cracks. Inside, two grown owlbears huddled around a fluffy cub and a smaller gray hatchling. Their ghostly yellow eyes locked onto her at once. Liora lowered her head and chuffed softly. The larger owlbear sniffed the air, then her shoulder. Pine. Only pine. The mother relaxed and nudged the cub forward in greeting. Liora's heart soared. She was inside the den now, accepted at the doorway, but four sharp pairs of eyes still watched her every twitch.
Liora woke inside the vine-wrapped dome the owlbears used as their sanctuary. Colored stones patterned the ceiling above her. The mother owlbear was already up, nudging the fluffy cub and the gray hatchling toward the mouth of the cliffside cave. Liora rolled off her side and padded after them. Today, she decided, she would live exactly like an owlbear from sunrise to sundown. No druid habits. No human thinking. Just claws and feathers and the big blank stare. Outside, the father owlbear was tearing bark off a rotten log, digging for grubs. Liora watched his paws. Rip, dig, snap. She copied him. Her claws slid into the wet wood and came out with a fat white grub wriggling on the tip. She swallowed it whole before her human brain could argue. It tasted like dirt and butter. She chuffed with pride. The father owlbear glanced at her, then looked away, still chewing. The cub tried to climb her back. Liora froze the way she'd seen the mother freeze, letting the little one scramble up her feathers and roll off her rump. The hatchling squeaked at her feet. Liora practiced the stare. Wide eyes. Empty head. Think of nothing. Think of moths. Then the wind shifted, and she smelled it. White-veined leaves. The poison plants the druids had warned about. The scent came from a patch of low green growth right at the edge of the family's foraging ground. The cub was already waddling toward it, curious about the pale stems. Liora's owlbear day cracked in half. An owlbear would not know those leaves were poison. An owlbear would sniff, maybe bite, maybe learn too late. A druid would act. She chose the cub. She lunged, scooped the cub under one huge paw, and swatted the plants flat. She kept swatting. She tore the patch out by the roots, spat the stems away, and shoved loose dirt over the torn ground. The cub squalled. The mother owlbear came fast, feathers raised, a low growl rolling out of her chest. Liora sat down. She showed her empty paws. She pushed a shredded white-veined leaf toward the mother with her nose and huffed once, hard. The mother sniffed the leaf. Sniffed the cub. Sniffed Liora. The growl stopped. She picked the cub up in her beak and carried him back to the cave without a sound. The father watched Liora a long moment. Then he went back to his log. Liora stayed in the churned dirt. She had saved the cub. She had also moved like a druid, fast and clever and wrong-shaped for the herd. The mother had not thanked her. The mother had taken her cub away. One day of being a true owlbear, ruined before noon. And the poison patch, she realized, was much bigger than this one corner.
