Lucia Heartwell was seven years old, and she could see what people hid in their hearts. She stood in the great hall of Blackwater Deep and watched the two heirs argue over a border map. The tall one slammed his fist on the table. The dark-haired one turned her back. But Lucia saw the truth beneath their anger. They loved each other. They were afraid to say it. And she had decided, from the first day she arrived at this cold fortress, that she would make them stop fighting. She tugged the tall heir's sleeve. "You don't hate her," Lucia said. "You're scared she'll leave." He looked down at her the way one looks at a stray cat. "Someone take the child outside," he said, and went back to the map. This always happened. Grown people did not listen to a small girl. To them she was decoration, a blonde head to pat and forget. She had told them the truth for weeks. Each time, they smiled and steered her toward the door. Lucia climbed the ivy-covered stone tower where she slept. Her white rabbit waited on the windowsill, green eyes bright. She sat on the floor and thought hard. Words did not work. She needed proof they could hold in their hands. She knew a secret. The dark-haired heir kept a jewelry box in her room, one with a false bottom. Lucia had watched her hide things there when she thought no one saw. Whatever a person guarded most, they buried in that hidden space. That night Lucia crept into the heir's chamber. The box sat on the dresser, polished and locked. Her small fingers found the discreet latch. The false bottom slid open. Inside lay a folded letter, its edges soft from handling. Lucia could not read every word, but she saw the tall heir's name written again and again. Her rabbit thumped a warning. Footsteps. Lucia grabbed the letter and ran. She burst into the hall where both heirs still stood. She did not stop to plan. She held the letter high over her head. "She wrote this about you," Lucia said to the tall heir. "She keeps it hidden. I told you the truth." The dark-haired heir went pale. She lunged, but the tall one had already taken the paper. He read it. His hard face cracked. He looked at the woman he had been fighting all week, and the anger drained out of him. The hall went silent. For the first time, the grown people were listening to Lucia. Then the dark-haired heir's eyes filled with fury, not love. "You went into my room," she said. "You touched my things." She seized Lucia's wrist. "This child is a thief. Lock her in the tower until she learns." Guards stepped forward. Lucia had made them listen at last. Now they would shut her away where she could reach no one.

Chapter 2

The heavy door shut behind Lucia. A key turned. She sat on the cold floor of the tower cell and hugged her knees. The heirs were down in the hall, listening at last. But now she could not reach them. Words had failed her. Then a locked door had beaten her. She needed someone on the outside to carry her message. She needed the one person who ever came near this cell. Boots scraped in the hall. A slot in the door slid open. An old guard peered in, fat and gray, his white beard spilling past his belt. He pushed a bowl of bread through the gap. His helmet sat crooked. He did not look at her the way the heirs did. He looked tired. "Eat, little thief," he said. "Then be quiet." Lucia took the bread. But she looked past it, into him. She saw what he hid. A grown daughter he never wrote to. A quarrel years old. A wish he could not speak. "You have a daughter," Lucia said. "You miss her. You think it's too late to say sorry." The guard went still. His hand froze on the door slot. "Who told you that?" "No one. I see it." Lucia leaned close to the gap. "It isn't too late. She's waiting for you to speak first." For a long moment he said nothing. His eyes wet at the corners. He rubbed them with a thick thumb and pretended it was dust. "You're a strange child," he muttered. "The heirs need help too," Lucia said fast. "They love each other. They're scared. If they stop fighting, this whole place gets warmer. But I'm locked in here. I can't tell them." She pressed her small hand flat to the door. "You can. Take them a message for me." The guard looked down the empty hall. He looked back at her. She saw the wall inside him crack, the same way the heir's anger had cracked over the letter. "What message," he said. Not a question. A surrender. "Tell them the girl in the tower says the truth doesn't stop being true just because it hurts. Tell them to finish what the letter started." He repeated it under his breath, once, twice, until it stuck. Then he closed the slot. His boots moved off, not away down the hall, but down the stairs toward the great hall. Lucia sat back. On the windowsill, her white rabbit watched with bright green eyes. She had no key. She had no freedom. But she had a voice now, walking on old legs toward the two people she needed to reach. She pressed her ear to the cold stone and waited to hear what her message would break loose.

Lucia pressed her ear to the stone and listened. Nothing came up the stairs but silence. She thought her message had broken through. Instead, the door groaned open. The old guard filled the doorway, helmet crooked, beard swaying as he shook his head. Behind him stood the dark-haired heir. "Your message," the guard said. "I gave it. She wants to answer it herself." He stepped aside and would not meet Lucia's eyes. Sebastian Ashford walked in. The girl she had come to help stood behind him, arms crossed, jaw set. She did not look at Lucia. She looked at the wall. "You told my brother to finish what you started," the dark-haired girl said. Her voice was flat and cold. "You think you know my heart. You don't." Lucia looked into her, the way she always could. Usually she saw everything. A hidden wish. A soft place under the anger. This time she found only a locked box, sealed tight. The fury had shut the lid. Even Lucia's gift slid off the surface and found no way in. "You wrote the letter," Lucia said quietly. "You love him. I know it's still true." "You stole from me. You read my words out loud to strangers." The girl's hands shook. "Whatever was in that letter, you killed it when you touched it." Lucia's chest went tight. She reached for the feeling under the anger and hit stone. For the first time, her gift failed her. Words had failed. The door had failed. Now her one true power failed too. So she stopped reaching in. She spoke from her own heart instead. "I was wrong to take it," Lucia said. "It wasn't mine. I hurt you to prove something. I'm sorry." The girl went still. Sebastian turned to look at her. The old guard held his breath. "I can't open your heart," Lucia went on. "You shut it because I broke in. That was my fault, not yours." She held out her small hands, empty. "I have nothing to steal now. Just sorry." The girl's arms loosened. Her eyes went wet, then hard again. She turned away fast. "Keep her locked up," she told the guard. "I'm done listening." She left. Her boots struck each stair. But at the bottom, they stopped. They did not go on. Sebastian followed her down, and Lucia heard two voices below, low and close, not shouting for the first time. The guard shut the door softly. "You didn't reach her," he said. "No," Lucia said. "But I stopped pushing on the lock." She sat on the cold floor. Her rabbit hopped to her knee, green eyes bright. Below, the two voices kept on. "She stayed to hear her brother. That's a start." The apology had cost Lucia her proof and her power. She had nothing left to bargain with. But downstairs, for the first time, the heirs were talking instead of fighting.
