Chapter 1

Lucien Ashford wanted the dukedom his father had died holding. He stood in the great hall of Rosewood Manor and listened to the family steward read the succession law aloud. The steward's finger stopped on one line. No heir could claim the seat unless he proved a true-hearted bond. Lucien's black-gloved hands stayed still at his sides. His red eyes did not blink. He had the blood, the name, and the wealth. He did not have the one thing the law demanded. "The council will test you," the steward said. "They keep a creature in the forest that senses love. A false bond, and it turns away. Then you lose the seat forever." Lucien left the manor before dusk. The forbidden forest pressed close beyond the garden wall. He had no bond to offer. He had never let anyone close enough to form one. But he knew of one person who might stand beside him. He found Lilian Blackwood at the forest's edge, kneeling in her pale blue dress, feeding bread to a thin fox. She did not rise when his shadow fell over her. "You only visit when you need something," she said. She brushed crumbs from her hands. "What is it this time, Lucien?" They had grown up on neighboring estates. She had watched his family crush rivals. She trusted his ambition more than his heart. "The law needs a true bond," he said. "Stand with me before the council's creature. Pretend, if you must." Lilian stood. Her blue eyes held his. "Pretend. That is all you know how to ask." "It is all I have." She studied him a long moment. Then she turned toward the dark trees. "The creature will know a lie. Follow me. I will show you why your plan fails." She led him deep into the forest. A white unicorn waited in a clearing, its horn catching the last light. A faint heart glowed on its flank. It lifted its head and watched them both. "This is what they will use," Lilian said. "It feels what is real. Walk to it. Lie to its face." Lucien crossed the clearing. The unicorn let him come close. Then it stepped back and lowered its horn at him. The glow on its flank dimmed. It had read him and found nothing. "You see," Lilian said quietly. "No trick passes. You cannot fake this." Lucien stared at the creature that had just disqualified him. His plan was dead. He turned to Lilian. "Then teach me to make it real." She did not laugh. She did not walk away. "That is the first honest thing you have ever asked me." She looked at the fading glow, then back at him. "It will take more than you think. And I have my own price." The unicorn watched them both. For the first time, Lucien's path to the dukedom ran straight through his own guarded heart.
