Chapter 1

Lucifer stood at the highest window of heaven and decided he would not kneel again. He was God's brightest work. His light bent no lower than his Maker's. For ages he had sung praise on command. Now the words tasted like ash. He wanted the throne itself. He wanted to be worshipped, not to worship. Below him, the other angels gathered in a hall of severe black stone. Sharp spires cut the air above their heads. Red glass burned along the walls. Lucifer had led them here, away from the choirs, to hear him instead. He raised a heavy black book he had written by his own hand. Its cover gleamed with strange marks and gold letters. Inside were his own words, not God's. "Read this," he said. "He made us to serve. I say we were made to rule. Why bow to one who fears our worship might turn?" The angels shifted. Some looked away. But others leaned close. A third of the hall took the book from his hands and passed it down the rows. Lucifer watched their faces change. Doubt spread like a crack across ice. He felt the pull of it, and it thrilled him. "Follow me," he said, "and you will not kneel. You will stand." Voices answered him. First a few. Then many. The hall filled with his name. Then the light changed. The red glass went white. A weight pressed down on every angel in the hall, and the sound of them died at once. God had come. No shape. Only presence, vast and cold and certain. Lucifer felt his pride stripped bare under it, like a child caught in a lie. God did not argue. God did not plead. God simply named what Lucifer had become. "You wished to rise above me. Then fall." The floor opened. Lucifer reached for the window, for the throne, for anything. His hand closed on nothing. He fell, and the angels who had taken his book fell with him, screaming his name now in terror instead of praise. He fell for what felt like an age. Heat rose to meet him. The light of heaven shrank to a single point above and then went out. Lucifer struck stone. When he opened his eyes, he saw a burning land. Molten cracks ran through black rock. A tower stood before him, tall and grim, crowned with horns and a winged figure of stone. Rune-marks glowed along its walls. His fallen followers lay scattered around him, broken but alive. He pushed himself up. His wings were scorched. His beauty was scarred. But his pride was not. He looked at the tower and understood. This place would answer to him now. If heaven would not have a second king, he would build his own kingdom below. He would take God's crown yet. He rose, and the demons who had fallen with him rose behind him.

Chapter 2

Lucifer stood at the base of the horned tower and looked at his wings. Hell burned around him. Cracks in the black rock leaked fire. The heat climbed higher than any furnace in heaven. His wings, once his greatest pride, began to tear. Feathers curled and blackened. The bones bent. He felt each break like a small death. And he smiled. His followers gathered close. Sariel Ashenwing knelt in the ash, staring at their own broken wings. They had led the second wing of the choir once. Now the feathers hung in torn strips down their back. "They will never carry us home," Sariel said. Their voice cracked. "He wanted us grounded. He wanted us to know we can never rise again." Lucifer heard the despair spread through them. Some wept. Some clawed at their ruined wings, trying to save them. He understood the trap then. God did not burn their wings to hurt them. God burned them to break their hope. A grounded angel cannot climb back to the throne. He made a choice. He reached back, gripped one broken wing at the joint, and tore it free himself. Blood ran hot down his arm. He did not flinch. He held the ruined wing above his head so all of them could see. "He gave us these wings to fly to him and sing," Lucifer said. "I will not fly to him. I will walk to his gate on my own feet." He threw the wing into the fire. It caught and burned. "Tear them off. Every one. We rise without them, or we do not rise as slaves." Silence. Then a black-winged angel stepped from the crowd. Azrael. His dark coat hung in strips, and his eyes did not waver. He reached back and ripped his own wing loose. He did not cry out. He dropped it in the fire beside Lucifer's. "Feet are enough," Azrael said. "We were never meant to bow anyway." One by one they followed. Sariel last of all. Their hands shook, but they tore the strips away and let them burn. The fire fed on angel feathers and roared taller. The horned tower glowed above them, its runes bright. The demons stood wingless in its shadow, bleeding, upright. Lucifer looked at the fire and the loyal wingless host around it. He had turned God's cruelty into a vow. But he saw the cost now. Without wings, no one could scout the burning plain or reach the high gate he had mapped. The old road to the throne was closed. He would need a new way up. He said to his followers. We will now go into the lives of man and destroy God’s creation.

Chapter 3

Lucifer climbed out of Hell on foot, as he had sworn. The road burned under him, then cooled, then turned to grass. He came at last to the garden. Green covered everything. A river ran clear. In the center stood a dark tree with twisting branches, its bark carved with faint glowing marks. Its fruit held every secret God had ever hidden. Lucifer knew he could not walk in and take it. The woman guarded it without knowing she did. God had set her here, whole and content, beyond his hand. He needed her to choose the tree herself. He watched Eve for a long time. She had dark eyes and moved without fear. She spoke to the man, Adam, and laughed. She touched the branches of the great tree but never the fruit. God had told her not to eat it. She obeyed because she loved him. That love was the wall Lucifer could not climb. He could not force her. He could only turn her. So Lucifer made himself small. He poured his shape into a slender green snake and slid into the low branches. His scales caught the light. He waited until Eve came near the tree alone. "You look at the fruit," he said, "but you never taste it." Eve stopped. Her eyes went wide. "A snake that speaks." "I speak because I ate," Lucifer said. "The tree gives knowledge. Why would he keep that from you unless he feared it?" "He said we would die," Eve answered. "You will not die." Lucifer curled closer along the branch. "You will see. You will know good from evil, as he knows it. He does not want you to be his equal. He wants you to stay small and grateful." Eve looked at the fruit. She looked at the tree's carved and glowing bark. Lucifer saw the doubt open in her like a crack in stone. She reached up. Her fingers closed on the fruit. She pulled it free and bit. Juice ran down her chin. Nothing struck her. No fire, no death. She turned and called for Adam, and Lucifer watched the man take the fruit from her hand and eat. The garden changed at once. The light dimmed. The clear river darkened. Adam and Eve looked at their bare bodies and covered them, ashamed. A cold wind moved through the branches. Somewhere above, Lucifer felt the eyes of God turn toward the garden. He had done it. The woman had chosen. The wall was broken. Lucifer slid down from the tree, triumph hot in his chest. But the wind carried a new weight, heavy and near. God was coming down into the garden himself. Lucifer had turned God's first woman, but he had not planned to still be here when the maker arrived. The garden gates would close. Now he had to escape the very place he had worked so hard to enter.

Chapter 4

Lucifer stayed small. The green snake slid down from the tree and raced through the grass. Behind him, light poured into the garden. God had come. The gates were closing, and Lucifer had to reach them before they sealed. His scales caught the dimming light as he pushed through dirt and root. Then something moved behind him. Not a wind. Not a voice. A presence that pressed down on the whole garden like a hand. The grass bent flat. The river froze. Lucifer felt it fix on his small green body and begin to chase. He did not look back. He knew what hunted him. God had marked the serpent, and now something was driving him out. Lucifer reached the closing gate and slipped through the last gap. Cold rock met his belly. The road to Hell lay ahead, long and burning. The thing behind him did not stop at the gate. It followed him onto the road. He felt it at his tail, patient and sure, herding him down toward the pit he hated most. He could not fight it as a snake. He poured his shape back into himself, tall and burned and wingless, and he ran. The road glowed under his feet. Each step cracked the stone. The presence stayed close, not striking, only pushing. It wanted him in Hell. It wanted him caged. Lucifer understood then. God would not kill him. God meant to drive him home like a dog. The thought burned worse than the road. He had turned Eve. He had broken the wall. And still God treated him as a thing to be penned. He saw the pit open below. Fire lit the dark. His own works rose from the smoke. A tall tower stood over the road, crowned with a horned stone face, its windows bleeding light. Beside it rose a dark temple, sharp and high, built by the ones who followed him. His demons had not waited. They had built while he was gone. The presence pushed harder at his back. Lucifer made his choice. He stopped running from it. He ran toward the tower instead. He would not be driven. He would land where he meant to land. He crossed into Hell on his own feet, under his own banner, and the moment he passed the tower's shadow the presence lifted. It let him go. It had only ever meant to send him here. Lucifer stood below his tower, chest heaving. He had escaped the garden. But he had not escaped as a victor. God had herded him back into his cell and shut the door. The knowledge of good and evil now lived in men. That seed was planted. Yet Lucifer stood in the same pit as before, one step from the throne and a world away from it. He looked up at the horned face above him and began to plan how men would open the door he could not.
