Lumen Graves's dream is illuminating every dark corner of the town so no zombie can hide from the survivors seeking refuge beneath its glow..
Lumen Graves had wired lights across half the town, but tonight only one still worked. It hung from a pole outside the chapel where they slept, a grim stone box with a rotted saint carved above the door. The bulb threw a small yellow circle on the cracked street. Beyond that circle, the dark pressed in like water. Somewhere out there, the dead were moving. Lumen swore this town would glow bright enough that no zombie could hide. Right now the light barely reached past their own boots. A snap of teeth broke the quiet. Lumen spun. At the edge of the glow, a gaunt shape lurched forward, jaws clacking at the air. Its clothes hung in strips. Its mouth dripped. It snapped again, chewing at nothing, then fixed on Lumen and shuffled closer. Behind it, more shapes shifted in the black. Lumen could not see them, only hear the dragging feet. One light would not hold. Lumen ran into the chapel and grabbed the spare battery and a coil of wire. Their hands shook. They had one more bulb, cracked but alive, saved for weeks. They climbed the pole, stripped the wire with their teeth, and twisted it to the live line. The snapping thing reached the pole and clawed at Lumen's dangling foot. Lumen kicked down hard. Their heel struck the rotted skull. The zombie stumbled back. Lumen jammed the second bulb into the socket and slapped the battery into place. Nothing. The dark surged closer. Lumen slapped the battery again, harder. Sparks bit their fingers. Then the bulb flared. A second circle of light bloomed across the street, wider now, joined to the first. The brightness caught the snapping zombie full in the face. It shrieked and threw an arm across its eyes. Behind it, the glow revealed the truth. Not two zombies. Not five. A dozen stood frozen in the new light, blinking, exposed. They had been steps away the whole time. Lumen's stomach dropped. The light had done its job. It had shown them everything. And everything was worse than the dark had let them believe. The zombies flinched from the glow, but they did not leave. They circled the edge of it, staying just inside the shadow the two bulbs could not reach. Lumen clung to the pole and counted. The crowd was growing. Each dead face that stepped near turned away from the light, then drifted to the dark seams between the beams. Lumen understood now. One more bulb was not enough. The zombies had learned the shape of the light. They would wait in the gaps until the batteries died. Lumen slid down the pole and backed to the chapel door. The two lights held their small ground. Beyond them, in the dark alleys, the dead pressed against the town's few bright edges and waited for them to fail.
Lumen crouched by the chapel door and watched the two bulbs. One flickered. The batteries were dying, and the dead knew it. In the shadow seams between the beams, a dozen zombies waited. They stayed just past the light, patient. When the bulbs failed, they would rush the door. Lumen had minutes, maybe less. Lumen dug through the supply bag inside the chapel. Wire, tools, a dead flashlight. Then their hand closed on a cold metal block. The reserve pack. A cluster of thick batteries, its charge lights glowing green and red. Weeks ago Lumen had saved it and forgotten. Enough power for hours. But the pack fit nothing they had wired. It needed a fixture. A voice cut through the dark. "You planning to sit there and pray?" A man stepped from the alley into the weak glow. He wore a red headband and no shirt. A long knife hung at his belt. He dragged something heavy behind him with both hands, boots scraping stone. "Found these two streets over. Thought a light freak like you might want them." It was a tall lamp post, four green lanterns branching from its top. Rambo had wrenched it from the ground and hauled it here. The zombies flinched at the sight of him and pulled back a step. "Green glass," Lumen said. "Four lamps." Four beams meant no shadow gaps. No seams for the dead to hide in. "Then wire it," Rambo said. "Fast. Your bulbs are almost done." Lumen ran. They stripped wire with their teeth and clamped the reserve pack to the base of the green lamp. Rambo held the heavy post upright, arms shaking, boots braced against the cobbles. The old bulbs sputtered. One went dark. The dead surged forward, jaws snapping, and Rambo kicked the nearest one back down the steps. "Now, Lumen!" he shouted. Lumen jammed the last wire home and slapped the pack's switch. The four green lanterns blazed. A wide ring of green light burst across the street, no gaps, no seams. It swallowed the shadows where the dead had hidden. Zombies shrieked and threw their arms over their eyes. They stumbled back, fully exposed, nowhere dark to stand. The green glow pushed them to the far walls. Lumen dropped to their knees, breathing hard. The reserve pack's lights read full. The green lamps would hold for hours. For the first time, the light had won a piece of the street. Rambo wiped his knife on his pants. "One lamp," he said. "How many streets you got?" Lumen looked past the green ring. Beyond it, the town stretched black in every direction. Dozens of streets. Dozens of dark corners. One reserve pack. And the dead were already drifting toward the edges of the green, testing it, learning its shape again.
The green ring held, but Lumen watched one lantern fade. The lamp on the far side burned weaker than the rest. A thin brown haze crept across its glass. Beyond it, the dead pressed close. They had found the weak spot. One zombie clawed at the seam where the light thinned, testing where the shadow leaked through. If that bulb died, the gap would open, and the ring would break. Lumen crawled to the fading lantern. Grime coated the glass, choking the beam. They rubbed it with a sleeve. The light brightened, then dimmed again. The problem was inside, not on the surface. The bulb was simply dying. Lumen had no spare. The reserve pack still read full, but full power meant nothing through a burnt-out bulb. "It's going," Lumen said. "This one's done. I need glass. A fresh lamp." Rambo stood at the ring's edge, knife drawn, watching the dead crowd the weak point. He had held the whole post upright with his bare arms an hour ago. Now he pointed his blade past the shadows. "Two streets over. Big store. Windows full of lights." His voice stayed flat. "You want a bulb, we go take one." "We'll lose the ring the second we step out." "Then we run fast." He didn't wait. He kicked a zombie off the steps and cut a path into the dark. Lumen grabbed the reserve pack and followed, out past the safe green glow. They ran through black streets. Dead hands grabbed from doorways. Rambo swung his knife and dropped them. Ahead, a tall building glowed. Its huge sign still burned, and its wide windows spilled bright light onto the street. The dead would not stand in that glow. Lumen and Rambo pushed through the doors into the bright aisles. Inside, shelves held rows of bulbs and fixtures. Lumen tore open a box and found a fresh green lamp. But something else caught their eye by the counter. A long blade rested there, shaped like a spotlight, its edge glowing pale blue. It threw a narrow beam wherever it pointed. A light you could carry. A light you could swing. "That," Rambo said, and grinned. He tossed it to Lumen. "Now you can fight in the dark too." They ran back with the bulb and the glowing sabre. At the chapel, Lumen slammed the fresh lamp into the dying socket. Green light flared. The gap sealed. The dead fell back from the whole ring again. Lumen stood, sabre in hand, its beam cutting a line across the cobbles. The chapel was safe. But the bright store still burned two streets away, a second island of light in a black town. If one building could hold a room of glow, Lumen thought, they didn't need one lamp for every street. They needed to link the lights that were already there.
