Chapter 1

Luna Meadows had built a whole café inside her head, and it had nowhere to live. She sat cross-legged on her bed, laptop warm on her knees, scrolling through rental listings for the twentieth time. Her Labrador pressed his chin against her ankle and sighed. "I know," she told him. "Everyone wants a gaming café. Nobody wants to give one a room." The dream was simple. Soft couches, old consoles, tournaments on rainy nights. A place where the shy kids and the loud kids and the ones who never fit anywhere could sit under one roof and play. Luna had saved for two years to make it real. But every space she found was too big, too costly, or already gone. Her studio apartment held everything she owned in one honest room. The rent came due in nine days. If she signed a café lease she could not afford, she would lose both. So she kept scrolling, and the listings kept saying no. The dog stood up. He nosed at the window, tail thumping. Luna followed his gaze down to the street. A man in a paint-stained jacket was dragging a FOR LEASE sign out of a storefront across the way. She knew that storefront. A tea shop had closed there months ago. The windows had been papered over ever since. Luna shoved her feet into her sandals. "Come on," she said. The dog beat her to the door. They crossed the street together. The man was folding the sign under his arm. "You're too late," he said, not unkindly. "Signed it this morning." "To who?" Luna asked. "Some coffee chain." He shrugged. "They pulled out an hour ago. Cold feet." He looked at the paper sign, then at the empty shop. "Now I'm stuck showing it all over again." Luna's heart went loud. She looked past him through the glass. The room was small. Wood floors, a long counter, a wall wide enough for a screen. She could see the couches. She could see the kids. "I want it," she said. The man raised an eyebrow. "You haven't asked the price." She asked. He told her. It sat just under the number she had saved, if she gave up the studio and slept in the back until things turned. That was the catch, and she felt it land. Sign this lease, and she had no home. Just a café floor and a dog and a gamble. Luna looked down at the Labrador. He was already sniffing the doorframe like he lived there. "Okay," she said. "Where do I sign?" An hour later she stood alone in the empty shop, key cold in her palm. She had a space at last. She also had nowhere to sleep but this bare wooden floor, and nine days until the movers came. Her dream had a room now. She just had to survive inside it.
