Chapter 1

Luna Starlight signed up for the winter festival talent show without knowing one dance move. She was five years old, with long blonde hair and a shiny K-pop outfit her mother had stitched from scraps. She wanted to win the grand prize. She had told everyone she would. Now the show was three days away, and her feet had never learned a single step. She stood in the living room of the big yellow house. Snow pressed against the bright windows. On the table sat a small disc player with a clear lid and a row of buttons. Luna pressed the middle button. Music burst out, fast and bright. She bounced. She spun. She fell on her bottom. She tried again. She copied what she thought dancers did. She waved her arms. She kicked one leg high. She lost her balance and knocked her elbow on the table. Her eyes stung. Three days. She had nothing. The black and brown cat watched from the windowsill. It flicked its tail in time with the beat. Luna stared at it. The cat swayed left, then right, following the music. Its whole body moved like the song told it to. "That's it," Luna whispered. "You just listen." She stopped trying to copy pictures in her head. She closed her eyes and let the beat move her. When the drum hit, she stamped. When the singer went high, she reached up. She stopped thinking about winning. She just followed the sound, like the cat did. The music ended. Luna stood still, breathing hard. She had made it all the way through without falling. She pressed the button again to be sure. Her feet knew when to step now. Her arms knew when to swing. She had a dance. It was not fancy. It was hers. She ran to the window and pressed her nose to the cold glass. Outside, past the pink fence, a berry plant poked through the snow. Its red and pink clusters glittered, dotted with shining blueberries. She grinned. She would pick a handful and pin them in her hair for the show. Sparkles for the stage. Then she saw the sign her mother had left taped to the disc player. Luna could read a little. She sounded out the big words. The talent show was not in three days. It was tomorrow. Someone had changed the date. Luna's grin froze. She had a dance now, but only one. She had run it through one time. Tomorrow she would stand on a real stage, in front of the whole town, with a dance she barely knew. The cat jumped down and rubbed her leg. Luna hugged it tight and looked at the disc player. "One more time," she said. "Then a hundred more." She pressed the button and began again.
