Chapter 1

Lyra stopped walking when she saw the symbols. They were carved into the stone foundation beneath the coffee shop window — the same window she passed twice a day, five days a week, for the last eight months. The spirals folded back into themselves exactly the way they did in her dreams. But they were arranged in a sequence she had never drawn. She crouched and pressed her fingers into the grooves. The stone was warm. She pulled out the leather book from her bag — the one with Dreams tooled into the cover — and flipped through forty pages of her own attempts. None of them matched this arrangement. The symbols appeared in groups of three on the stone, repeating like a sentence she could almost read. Her shoulder blade began to burn where the mark sat beneath her shirt. Someone had carved her private dreams into public stone, and they knew something about the sequence that she did not. The door was already opening, and someone else had a key. She photographed the carvings with her phone, then stood and looked down the street. Two blocks away, embedded in the plaza she cut through every morning, sat the crystal boulder she'd noticed once and dismissed as art. She walked to it now with purpose. When she touched its surface, light bloomed beneath her palm — soft blue and violet — and the mandala carved into its face began to glow. The spirals matched the ones on the coffee shop foundation. They matched the ones in her book. But here they were complete, radiating outward in rings she had never managed to capture. The heat in her shoulder blade spread down her spine. This was not coincidence. This was instruction. She turned and followed the street back past the coffee shop, scanning every surface with new attention. The bookstore cottage sat three doors down. She had browsed its shelves twice before, looking for grimoires that might explain her symbols. Now she looked at the door frame. More carvings. Smaller, older, nearly hidden in the decorative woodwork. The same spirals. The same groups of three. She pushed the door open without hesitation. Whatever was unlocking had left her a trail, and she was done pretending she didn't see it.
