Lyra Gelatine froze at the edge of the trees when the boy screamed. He had come to gather firewood near her cave, and now he saw her true shape. Her body glowed pale blue in the dusk. Green hair floated around her shoulders. Bubbles drifted through her half-solid arms. She wanted only to build a safe home here, a hidden place where creatures like her could live near humans without fear. But this boy would run to the settlement and end that dream before it began. Her little pet pressed against her leg. It was a small blob of blue slime shaped like a plump cat, with soft ears and a curling tail. It made a worried sound. Lyra dropped to one knee. She had two choices. She could flee deeper into the ruins and lose the ground she had claimed. Or she could face the boy and try to change what he believed. "Wait," she said. Her voice was calm and human. The boy stopped at the tree line, one foot already turned to run. She lifted her open hands to show she held nothing. "I won't hurt you. Look." She pulled the black cloak from her pack and drew it over her shoulders. The deep hood swallowed her glowing hair. In the fading light, the grey-edged cloth hid the blue of her skin. She looked almost like any tired traveler on the road. "You're the monster," the boy said. His voice shook. "They'll burn the woods to be rid of you." "Then let me show you something first." Lyra reached toward the cave behind her. Green and pink plants glowed along its stone mouth, fed by her magic. She pressed her palm to the ground. A shoot rose between them and opened into a small flower. "I make things grow. That is all my magic does out here. I want no fight." The blue slime cat trotted forward and bumped its nose against the boy's boot. It purred. The boy stared. Slowly he crouched and touched its round head. It leaned into his hand. "His name is yours to give," Lyra said softly. "Come see him again. But keep where I live to yourself. If the village comes, we both lose this quiet place." The boy looked at the cat, then at her hidden face. "I won't tell," he whispered. He stood, clutched his bundle of wood, and ran home. Lyra let out a long breath. She had won his silence, not his trust. One frightened child now held her secret, and children talked in their sleep and to their friends. Her sanctuary still stood. But it stood on the word of a boy who might break it by morning. She gathered her pet and pulled the hood tighter. Tomorrow she would need to know whether he had kept his promise.

Morning came, and the village had not burned the woods. The boy had kept his word, at least for a night. But a safe cave meant nothing if no one else came to live in it. Lyra stood at the mouth of her sanctuary and looked at the empty stone rooms she had cleared. She had built a home for awakened monsters. She did not know where a single one of them hid. She pulled the black cloak over her blue skin and left the cave. She had heard of one person who traded with monster folk. The herb merchant came through this stretch of road every few weeks. Lyra waited near the trees until the woman appeared, leading a mule packed with bundled flowers. The merchant stopped without fear. She had dark braids threaded with small yellow blooms and a satchel worn soft at the strap. She looked at the hood, then past it, as if she already knew what hid underneath. "You're not a customer," she said. "Customers don't hide their faces from me." "I need to find others like me," Lyra said. She let the hood slip. Her hair glowed faint green in the shade. "Awakened ones. Where do they go?" The merchant did not step back. She checked a strap on the mule instead. "They go where humans don't look. I sell to them. I don't hand out their doors." "I'm not hunting them." Lyra pressed her palm to the ground. A shoot rose and opened into a small flower. "I made a place for them. It sits empty." The merchant studied the flower. She crouched, pinched a petal, and rubbed it between her fingers. "Grown clean. No rot." She stood. "That buys you one thing." She reached into a padded pocket and drew out a crystal on a small brass stand. Thin threads of light twisted inside it, green and violet and pale gold. "Mana leaves a trace. Awakened blood leaves a strong one. This finds it." She held it out. "Point it. Follow the threads. It won't lie." Lyra took the crystal. It hummed faint against her palm. "Where do I start?" "East. Past the marsh edge." The merchant tightened her satchel and clicked her tongue at the mule. "There's an old temple under the moss. Monsters live in its shell. They won't trust you fast." She began to walk. "Bring them flowers next time. Trust comes cheaper with something in your hands." She did not wait for thanks. She led the mule down the road and did not look back. Lyra closed her fingers around the crystal. The threads inside pulled faintly east, toward the marsh. She no longer stared at empty rooms with no answer. She had a direction and a tool. But a nest of frightened monsters would not open its doors to a stranger. Convincing them would be the next hard thing.

The crystal's threads pulled her east until the marsh gave way to old stone. Vines swallowed a ruined temple, but Lyra saw the truth inside its shell. Warm lanterns glowed. Small houses leaned against broken walls. Someone had made a home here. She stopped at the mossy steps and heard the movement before she saw it. Shapes darted behind doors. Eyes watched from windows. A nest of frightened monsters, exactly as the merchant warned. Lyra had prepared. She had traded her black cloak for a gown of purple and green, stitched with mana crystals. She wanted to look like a healer, not a hunter. In her hands she carried a slime core shaped like a heart. It glowed soft and cheerful. Proof she was one of them. She lifted it and stepped onto the first stair. A snarl broke the quiet. A wolfish shape lunged from a doorway, teeth bared, blocking her path. Others scattered behind him. A child was yanked indoors. The wolf-thing crouched low, ready to spring. Lyra froze. One wrong move and they would attack or vanish forever. "Wait." She held the glowing core high. "I'm awakened, like you. I only want to talk." The wolf did not soften. His eyes flicked past her to the trees, checking for the humans he expected. Lyra's plan was failing. A shiny gown and a pretty stone meant nothing to something that had been hunted. Then a door opened at the top of the steps. A bull-man came out, broad-shouldered, wrapped in a white priest's robe. He moved slow, one hand raised. Lyra knew his face. She had once closed a deep wound in his side with her magic. Brother Tauros. "Down," he said to the wolf. His deep voice filled the courtyard. "She is no threat. This one healed me when I could not walk." The wolf's ears twitched. He looked at the priest, then at Lyra, unsure. Brother Tauros came down the steps and stood beside her. He set a heavy hand on her shoulder, gentle. "I owe her my life," he told the watching windows. "She grows flowers. She mends flesh. She does not sell us." He nodded at the core in her hands. "And she carries a true heart. Look at it." One by one, doors eased open. A small green creature crept out first. Then another. The wolf backed away, still wary, but he let her pass. Lyra breathed again. "You built them something," Brother Tauros said quietly. "A safe place." "I did." Lyra looked at the frightened faces around her. "But it sits empty." The priest studied her a long moment. "Then I will speak for you here. Some may come. But these ones are broken by fear. Moving them will not be easy." He glanced toward the far wall, where the wolf still watched. "And not all of us wish to leave. Some would rather fight than trust a human road." Lyra nodded. She had found them at last. Now she had to earn them one by one.
