Chapter 1

Lyra Kessvan wanted the head scribe's post in the grand library, and this morning a notice on the door said she would never touch its floor. She read it twice. Unranked applicants barred from the library floor. Her masters had sworn no ink-stained girl belonged inside that hall. Now a senior scribe had made their sneer into a rule. She pressed a hand to the cold stone wall of the old school and forced her breathing slow. Her fingers were black to the second knuckle. Her grey coat hung thin against the wind. She pushed her glasses higher, and the crack in the left lens caught the light. Behind the glass, her eyes glowed a faint gold. She had hidden that glow for years. She could not hide it if the crack spread. Time was running out for her in more ways than one. The main door led only to that notice and the man who wrote it. So Lyra went another way. She circled to the supply room the scribes used, a squat timber shed built against the school's stone side. The double doors stood unlocked. Inside, shelves held stacked paper, ink bottles, and rows of trimmed quills sorted by size. She knew this room fed the library. Every day a cart of fresh supplies rolled through a back passage to the reading hall. Runners carried it. No one checked a runner's rank. Lyra grabbed an empty crate and filled it with ink and quills. She pulled her collar high over her glasses. The back passage was low and dark. She pushed the crate ahead of her and walked like someone with a right to be there. A guard leaned by the inner door. He glanced at her load, not her face. "About time," he said. "Reading hall's dry." He waved her through. Her heart slammed as she stepped onto the library floor. Tall arched windows threw pale light across long tables. Shelves rose three stories high. She had made it inside, past the notice, past the rule, past the men who said never. She set the crate down and let herself breathe. Then a scribe at the nearest table lifted his head. His eyes went to her hands, black to the knuckle, and stayed there. "You're no runner," he said. His voice was quiet, certain, and it carried. Two others turned. Lyra straightened and did not run. She was inside the library at last. But she stood there marked, an unranked girl who had broken the new rule, and every scribe in the hall now knew her face.
