Lyra had aligned three portals. Two more like the last one, and someone would die inside a place with no names. She knelt on the wet stone floor of the castle and refused to let that happen. She meant to translate the full Song of the Maw before its last verse drove the island mad. To do that, she needed portals. To open portals safely, she needed to learn why the fourth one might swallow her whole. The castle helped nobody. Its walls bent where they should stay straight. Frescoes rewrote themselves while she watched, painting new doors, erasing old ones. Bioluminescent color washed across the impossible angles. Her freckles pulsed in answer, which meant portal geometry lived close, but she could not find the pattern. She opened the waterlogged whalebone book across her knees. Its fluid script moved when her freckles moved. Two symbols matched what her astrolabe carved into the fog before each alignment. She had aligned by copying those two. She had never understood the third symbol, the one that changed shape each time she looked away. Across the hall stood a massive stone fish, carved with coral ridges, its single pale eye fixed on her. She had ignored it for an hour. Now she noticed its eye glowed brighter each time her freckles flared. She held the astrolabe up. The stone eye pulsed in the same rhythm as the shifting third symbol. The gargoyle was a tuning fork. It showed the geometry the book could not hold still. Lyra pressed her palm to the cold stone and matched her astrolabe's dials to the eye's pulse. The third symbol stopped changing. It settled. For the first time she saw all three symbols at once. The misalignment was not random. It happened when she guessed the third symbol wrong and the portal opened between two real places instead of onto one. Water rose from the floor in a thin column. It gathered into the shape of a sailor, translucent, dripping, its face caught in a last gasp. A memory-echo. It reached toward a fresco of a burning harbor, then dissolved. Lyra's chest tightened. She now knew: the people who never returned were caught in that between-place, like this echo, endlessly reaching. A drifting colony of glowing forms poured down from the ceiling. Bands of light pulsed along its body until they aligned into one bright line pointing at a blank wall. The safe path. The castle was showing her the fourth portal. Lyra set her astrolabe to all three symbols. The wall thinned. Beyond it lay black water and a shape too large to look at. No swallowing pull. No between-place. She had aligned it clean. But the glowing colony's bands now spelled the third symbol over and over, faster, brighter. It was not guiding her anymore. It was warning her. Something on the other side had felt the portal open. And it was already moving toward the light.

The colony's lights still spelled the third symbol against the wall, faster now. Something on the far side of the open portal was coming. Lyra needed a name for it. She turned to the one person who always knew more than he admitted. Kaelen leaned against a bending pillar, tossing a coin, watching the black water beyond the thinned wall like a man watching rain. "You've seen this before," Lyra said. "Name it." "I've seen a lot of things." Kaelen caught the coin. "Most of them wanted to eat me. Charming company." "Kaelen." "You know, the trick with a hungry god is to never look interested." He grinned. "Play hard to get." Every question slid off him like water off oiled cloth. Lyra had aligned the portal to learn the Song of the Maw. Now the Song was answering back, and she could not read it in time. She pressed her palm to the cold wall. The water beyond bulged toward the light. A quiet voice spoke behind her. "He can't say it." Lyra turned. Two women stood in the shifting doorway. They wore the same green robes lined in gold. They had the same red hair, the same freckled faces. Only one glowed, her curls lit like embers. That one held a small cat close to her chest. The cat had violet eyes and did not blink. "Saraphillia," Kaelen said. His grin dropped. "And borrowed friends." Saraphillia ignored him. She looked at Lyra. "The smiling gods take a name when they give one. He knows that. That's why he jokes." The cat in her arms stretched and became a small girl with violet eyes. "He's not lying," Nyx said flatly. "He just can't pay." Lyra looked at Kaelen. For the first time his shadow moved wrong. It pulled toward the portal though he stood still. "If I say its name," Kaelen said, low, "it hears its name. And it comes faster." No joke this time. "That's the price. You want the word, it costs you the thing you named the word for." Saraphillia set a hand on Lyra's arm. "I trade names. I keep the ones that hurt to say." She met Lyra's eyes. "I'll carry this one for you." Lyra understood. A name spoken aloud would draw the thing. A name held by someone else would not. She nodded. Saraphillia leaned to Kaelen. He whispered one word into her ear. Lyra heard nothing. But Saraphillia flinched, and her glowing hair went dark for a moment, then lit again. "It's called the Verse-That-Wakes," Saraphillia said. Her voice stayed plain. "It is the last verse of your Song. It doesn't drive the island mad. It is the island, waking." The water beyond the wall stopped bulging. It went still. Listening. "You aligned the door that opens it," Saraphillia said. "Now you have to learn how to close it."
