Chapter 1

Lyra Wanderleaf sat cross-legged on the floor of her small shack, sorting scraps of maps she had collected for years. A tiny purple pixie zipped around her head, humming a tune only she seemed to hear. Lyra wanted one thing more than anything: to prove that the elven blood she felt in her bones was real, and that her true home, Erevan's Rest, was waiting somewhere out there. She picked up the weatherworn relic from its shelf. It was shaped like a strange, cracked key. She had carried it to the old elf statue in the clearing many times before, whispering questions to its quiet stone face. Today she went again, the pixie darting at her shoulder. Lyra knelt at the statue's feet and spoke aloud, as she always did. Then she noticed something new. A thin slot had appeared along the carved robe, narrow and key-shaped. Her breath caught. She slid the relic in. It clicked. A hidden panel swung open. Inside lay a folded letter and a worn map. Her hands shook as she read words written in a script she somehow knew. The map marked a path leading far from everything she had ever known. Proof. Real proof. Lyra ran home, clutching the letter and map to her chest. She burst through the door and held them up to the pixie, the only friend who never laughed at her. "Look," she whispered. "It's real. It was always real." The pixie spun in bright circles, and Lyra knew her search had finally begun.

Chapter 2

By dawn Lyra had packed the letter, the map, and her stone key into her satchel. The pixie rode on her shoulder as she crossed the village square. A wounded traveler sat slumped against a well, his leg bound in bloody cloth. He grabbed her sleeve and warned her that the forest road moved at dusk, that something hunted between the trees. Lyra listened in her careful, quiet way. Then she shouldered her pack and went anyway. At the road's edge stood a domed metal kiosk, its rusted panels streaked orange and blue. A bone marker had been driven into the dirt beside it, etched with glowing purple veins and jagged teeth. Lyra stopped. The warning was plain. A figure stepped from behind the kiosk. He was small, hooded in green, with silver hair and sharp ears like her own. An old elven compass hung from his belt, and a neat bedroll and water skins were already laid out on a low stone. "You're going in," he said. It was not a question. "You'll die alone. You won't with me." He told her his name was Arien Silverleaf. He had watched her speak to the wounded man. He had decided she was worth the trouble. Lyra let the silence stretch, testing him. Arien did not fill it. He only tapped the compass. "It reads paths older than the road. Useful at dusk." She studied his steady hands, the way he had already packed for two. She nodded once. They walked into the trees together as the light began to thin. The pixie tucked itself into Lyra's hair. Behind them, the bone marker glowed brighter. Ahead, the compass needle swung — not north, but toward something waiting. Lyra was no longer traveling alone, and the hunt had already begun.
