Chapter 1

Maddox Hatter had poured tea forty thousand times, and it was always four o'clock. The hands on the tower above him never moved. He lived at the top of a leaning clock tower, and every guest who climbed his stairs heard the same story. Time once ran for him. A woman once loved him. Then his hour froze, and now no one believed either thing had happened. He wanted only one thing. He wanted the hour to move again, so he could walk out and court a real love before another cup went cold. But belief cost proof, and proof was the trouble. Guests laughed at his cursed hour. So today Maddox climbed to the tower's highest room to find something that would silence them. Two white rabbits watched from the sill. One wore a pink bow, one a blue. They had guarded this room since the freeze. Maddox knelt at a low chest and lifted out a broken pocket watch. Its face was cracked. Its casing had split, and tiny gears lay loose inside. "You stopped when I did," Maddox said. He held the watch to the window's gray light. The hands pointed at four. He turned the crown. Nothing clicked. He shook it, and a gear slid free and fell to the floor. The pink-bowed rabbit sniffed it and looked away. Maddox understood then. A broken watch proved nothing. Anyone could break a watch. It showed a stopped hour, not a stolen one. It was just wreckage, and wreckage told no story a guest would trust. So he set the watch down and reached deeper into the chest. His fingers found a worn book with softened corners. His old diary. The cover had faded, but the strap still held. He had written in it every day, back when days still turned. He opened it near the front. The early pages held dates. Real dates, one after another, in his own hand. Monday. Tuesday. A week that passed. Then the entries changed. Page after page said the same four words. "Still four o'clock again." The same date repeated for hundreds of pages, never once moving forward. Maddox's hands shook. Here was the thing the watch could not do. The diary showed time flowing, then stopping cold. It showed a man who once had days and lost them. No guest could laugh at his own steady handwriting bending into a loop. He pressed the book to his chest. The blue-bowed rabbit thumped its foot, as if it agreed. "This is the proof," Maddox said. "Not the watch. This." He tucked the diary under his arm and reached for his weathered top hat. The letters on the band read MH, worn soft by years. He set it on his head and started down the long stairs. Now he had his evidence. But proof invites a listener, and he had spent forty thousand teas driving every guest away.
