Madison Piercerjade's dream is earning respect as the leader of an all-girls social club.
Madison Piercerjade smoothed her white dress with the pink leopard print and stepped into the clubhouse in her black high heels. She was fifteen, sharp-eyed, and certain she belonged at the head of this club. The loud girl was already talking too much by the giant plush bunny statue near the entrance. Madison ignored her and counted the girls she still needed on her side. A new girl stood across the room. Sierra Woodfin. She had claimed the big cushioned reading nook beside the tall kangaroo fixture, planting herself as far from Madison as the room allowed. Sierra held up a pink diary covered in koala stickers. Madison's stomach dropped. She knew that book. She knew every page. "Madison cheats," Sierra said, loud and clear. "On every test. It's all written right here." The girls by the bunny statue went silent. Heads turned. The loud girl smiled like she had won something she hadn't even fought for. Madison kept her chin up, but the room had already shifted. Her plan needed numbers, and Sierra had just taken them. The diary snapped shut in Sierra's hand. Madison stood alone, and now she had a real enemy with real proof.
Madison stepped outside to clear her head. The cold air pushed back the heat of her humiliation. She walked past the tall dollhouse fixture in the yard, its dark roof and lit windows looming above the stones. Sierra stood there too, arms crossed, still holding the pink diary like a trophy. A smaller girl pushed between them. She was younger, maybe ten, clutching a pink and black mermaid cat plush against her chest. "Jay," Sierra said, flat. "Go inside." Jay did not move. She held up her phone. The screen showed a photo of a woman in a striped sweatshirt and green-striped leggings. "Mom said I could come," Jay said. Her voice shook but did not break. "She's my mom too. You always forget that part." Madison watched, quiet. Sierra's mouth opened, then closed. Jay turned to Madison next. "And you treat me like I'm nothing. Same as her. I'm not nothing." The mermaid cat trembled in her grip. The dollhouse windows glowed behind her small shoulders. Madison saw it then — the crack in Sierra's armor. She knelt slightly, met Jay's eyes, and spoke evenly. "You're right. I was wrong to ignore you. You came here on your own. That takes nerve." She did not smile. She did not soften. She only told the truth, because the truth was useful. Jay blinked, surprised. Sierra's jaw tightened. The diary lowered an inch in her hand. Madison straightened and walked back toward the clubhouse, leaving the sisters alone under the dollhouse lights. She had not won the club back. But she had found a seam in Sierra's wall, and Jay would remember who spoke to her like a person.
