Chapter 1

Malice had haunted the dark castle for three hundred years, and in all that time no one had claimed them. A shadow demon with purple eyes and black wings, built to serve a master. But Malice had none. They drifted through the cold halls, trailing smoke, waiting for a voice that never called. Tonight they stood in the ritual room beneath the swirling portal, staring at the stone floor where other demons knelt to their lords. Malice knelt to empty air. "Someone," they whispered. "Anyone worth kneeling to." Their dark magic itched under their skin. Blood magic needed a master to flow toward. Without one, it curdled. Malice felt it rot inside them like old fruit. A purposeless demon faded. First the smile cracked. Then the wings. Then nothing. Malice had watched it happen to others, and now the fading had started in their own hands. Their claws had gone gray at the tips. The portal above hissed. Malice looked up. Something was coming through. A figure dropped to the floor and landed on one knee. He rose slow, brushing ash from a suit that was half black and half purple. His wings matched it, one dark, one bright. His hair was slicked back, white against black horns. His eyes burned the same purple as Malice's own. He looked around the ritual room like he already owned it. "This castle felt hungry," he said. "So I came to feed it." He smiled. "I am Legion." Malice's magic surged toward him before they chose it. The pull was fierce, like a tide. This was a lord. A real one. Malice's gray claws darkened back to black. "You have no master," Legion said. It was not a question. He stepped closer. "And I have no right hand. I mean to take a throne, demon. Thrones are won with blood." He held out one pale hand. "Give me yours." Malice stared at the hand. Three hundred years of waiting pressed down on them. Everything they were had been shaped to serve. But this stranger wanted their blood magic, not their loyalty for free. Serving Legion meant binding their dark magic to his war. If he lost, Malice died with him. If he won, Malice stood beside the throne. Malice looked once more at the empty floor where they had knelt to nothing. Then they knelt to Legion instead. They bit their own palm. Black blood welled up and smoked. "I pledge my magic to you," Malice said. "Through every throne you climb." Legion gripped the bleeding hand. The blood bond snapped shut like a lock. Heat ran up Malice's arm and settled in their chest. The fading stopped. Their wide smile returned, sharp and certain. Legion pulled them to their feet. "Good," he said. "Then our first problem is the one who sits on the throne now." His smile matched theirs. "And he knows I have come."

Chapter 2

The portal that carried Legion through the castle hissed one last time and went dark. Malice watched the swirling light shrink to nothing above the ritual floor. The way back had sealed. When they looked around, the room was gone too. Cold stone had become cold dirt. Dead trees leaned over them under a sky with no stars. This was not their castle. This was no ground Malice knew. "Where has it dropped us?" Legion turned slow, his wings half spread. He studied the dark like he still owned it, but his jaw was tight. "You've haunted this world three centuries. Tell me where we are." Malice opened their mouth and found nothing. Three hundred years of halls and names, and not one of them matched this place. "I don't know, my lord," they said. The words tasted wrong. A right hand who could not guide was no right hand at all. Their claws itched. For the first time since the bond, the itch felt like failure, not power. Legion's purple eyes cut toward them. "I bound my blood to a demon who knows these lands. If you are lost, you are useless." Malice knelt in the dirt and pressed one palm flat against it. Blood magic ran through the ground the way water runs through soil. Every demon left a trace. If anyone of their kind had walked here, the dirt would remember. Malice pushed their magic down and searched. Faint, far off, a thread answered. Familiar. A pulse they had known for centuries. "There's a demon near," Malice said. "One I trust." They closed their eyes and pulled on the thread. The dead trees cracked apart. A figure stepped through, silver hair and black armor marked with glowing runes. Her purple eyes matched Malice's own. She moved like the broken branches owed her an apology. Malice's sister. Lilith. Of all the ground in all the world, their blood had called her. "You've been fading," Lilith said, voice soft, the kind of soft that stops a room. She looked at Malice's dark claws and understood. "No. You found a lord." Her eyes moved to Legion and narrowed. "Legion means to take a throne," Malice said. They stood. "And he's lost. We're lost. But you know this ground. I felt it in the dirt." Lilith circled Legion once. He let her, which told Malice he had measured her worth. "These lands sit below the throne you want," she said to him. "I serve where my family serves." She faced Malice. "I'll guide you. But the one who rules here already knows strangers have arrived." Legion smiled. The tightness left his jaw. "Then we are no longer lost." He looked at Malice with new weight. "Your blood found us a road." Malice met Lilith's eyes. They were not trapped anymore. They had a guide, a path, and a sister at their side. But Lilith's warning hung in the dead air. This land's ruler was already watching, and now he was watching three of them.
