Chapter 1

Marina waited outside the ceremony gates while the other dancers filed past her, each one holding a small shell token that glowed with a deity's mark. She had no token. Without one, she could not enter the sacred tail-marking contest, and the golden designs painted on the winner's tail would go to someone else this year. She had petitioned all three sea deities a week ago. None had answered. The last dancer swam through the gate, and the coral guards began to close it. Marina pressed her palms against the stone rim and forced herself to think. Her friend Pearl had once told her about a pond deep in the reef where petitions traveled faster. Pearl was gone now, vanished through a channel at the bottom of a diving basin after helping their friend Coral escape the regent's hunters. Marina had watched it happen. She had also watched Pearl leave one thing behind: a small crystal pearl, cracked and dim, resting on the pond's stone rim. Marina swam to the flower-ringed pool where Pearl used to sit. The crystal was still there. It no longer glowed. Pearl's mother's magic had been spent to find the deity who would help Coral. Marina picked it up anyway and held it against her chest. She did not need magic. She needed a name. Pearl had whispered one deity's true name into the diving basin the night she left, and Marina had been close enough to hear it. She had kept it folded in her memory like a pressed leaf, unsure if she had the right to use it. Marina swam to the diving basin and looked down into the clear water. She spoke the name once, quietly, into the surface. The water below her split open in a blue seam. A small token rose through the seam and settled in her palm: a flat disc of pale shell, marked with a single spiral. The deity had answered. Marina closed her fingers around the token and felt the seam close beneath her. She turned back toward the ceremony gates, the token warm in her hand. She would reach them before they sealed. But she had used a name that was not hers to use, and Pearl had told her that deity kept careful accounts. Marina swam faster. The contest was open to her now. What the deity would ask in return, she did not yet know.
