Chapter 1

Marissa Holsteins pushed her cart up the road with one goal: to reach the king's castle and have him drink her milk. She was a cow-woman from the dairy lands, curvy and strong, and no one made richer cream than she did. Behind her rolled a wagon holding her prized milking machine, its curved hoses and rounded cups packed tight in straw. She had traveled two days for this chance. She would not turn back. Red spears crossed the road ahead. Two guards stepped from the shade and blocked her path. "Halt," said the first. Her red hair spilled loose, and her chainmail caught the sun. This was Angelica Martinez, the king's guard. She looked Marissa over with a bored, tired frown. "Every peasant thinks her gift is worthy of the king. Most are wrong." Beside her stood a blonde knight with a heart-shaped sword. Lilith Maria tapped the blade against her heel. "Prove your offering is worth his time," she said. "Or crawl home." Marissa's face went hot. "My milk is the finest in the land. Let me pass." "Words," Angelica said. "We hear words all day. Show us." Marissa's chest tightened. She could argue, or she could act. She chose to act. She hauled the milking machine off the wagon and set it in the dirt. She fitted the cups, flipped the switch, and let the machine work. Rich cream poured into the glass jar, thick and golden at the edges. The guards leaned in despite themselves. Angelica dipped one finger and tasted. Her bored frown broke. Lilith took the jar and drank a long swallow. She lowered it slowly. "That," Lilith said, "is better than anything in the royal kitchen." Angelica wiped her mouth and met Marissa's eyes. Her tone changed. "You may pass. But hear this. The king has one hunger, and it is not milk. He collects wives. He wants a harem, not a dairy." Marissa held the jar to her chest. "I only want him to taste what I make." "Then be careful," Angelica said. "A man who wants many wives sees an offering like yours and wants the whole cow." She stepped aside and pointed up the road. Marissa loaded the machine and pushed her cart past the crossed spears. She had won the road. But near the castle gate stood a tall billboard, its letters bold and plain. It read: MILK FOR MOMMY. Marissa stopped and stared. She had not put that sign there. Someone knew she was coming. Someone had planned for her arrival, and it was not the king. She gripped her cart and walked toward the gate, no longer sure who waited inside.

Chapter 2

Marissa pushed her cart through the castle doors. Red and gold banners hung from every window, each marked with a heart. A woman waited in the great hall. She had white hair, a black gown stitched with gold, and a smile too wide. She stepped forward with open arms. "Welcome, dairy maid," the woman said. "I am one of the king's wives. He sent me to bring you to him." Marissa relaxed. "He wants to taste my milk?" "He wants everything you have," the woman said. Her name was Agatha, though she did not give it. She looked young, but her eyes were older than the stone walls. She waved a hand toward a low door. "This way. The king waits below." Marissa followed her down a cold stair. The hall opened into a dungeon. Chains and iron cuffs hung from one wall. A dramatic bed sat in the corner, roses piled at its feet. This was no throne room. "Where is the king?" Marissa asked. Agatha turned. Her smile fell away. She raised both hands and spoke a word Marissa did not know. Purple light snapped from her fingers. Chains flew off the wall and wrapped Marissa's wrists. They pulled tight and held her fast. "No king," Agatha said. "Only me. Your milk buys me this whole kingdom." She dragged Marissa's milking machine across the floor. She fitted the rounded cups and flipped the switch. The machine hummed to life. Marissa pulled at the chains. "Stop! That milk is for the king!" "It is for me now," Agatha said. Cream poured into the glass jar, thick and golden. Agatha laughed and watched it fill. "A thousand years I waited. No cow will slow me now." Steel boots rang on the stair. A red-haired knight burst into the dungeon. Her chainmail flashed. It was Angelica, the guard who had let Marissa pass at the gate. She drew her sword and pointed it at Agatha. "Step away from her," Angelica said. Agatha spun. "This is no concern of yours, guard." "The king has no wife with white hair," Angelica said. "You are no wife. You are a thief." She swung her blade and cut the machine's hose. Cream splashed across the stone. Agatha shrieked. Angelica lunged. Agatha threw up her hands and vanished in a burst of purple smoke. The chains fell loose. Marissa dropped to her knees, free. Angelica knelt beside her. "Are you hurt?" "No," Marissa said. She rubbed her wrists. "Who was she?" "A witch," Angelica said. "She has fooled the king before. She wanted your milk to buy his throne." She helped Marissa stand. "She will come back. She always does." Marissa looked at the split hose and the spilled cream. Her machine was broken. But she was alive, and she knew her enemy now. She gathered the pieces. "Then take me to the king," she said. "Before she finds another way."

Chapter 3

Marissa knelt by her broken machine. The witch was gone, but so was her way to prove her milk to the king. Angelica sheathed her sword and crouched beside her. "You saved my life," Marissa said. "I owe you." She lifted the split hose and turned it in her hands. The cut was clean. "I can fix this. And you should taste what she wanted to steal." Angelica watched her work. "You don't owe me anything. It was my duty." But she did not leave. She stayed close as Marissa twisted the hose back onto the machine's cup. The red-haired knight had saved her once already at the gate. Now she stood guard again, though no enemy remained. Marissa found the switch and flipped it. The machine hummed. She fitted the cup and let it work. Cream poured into the glass jar, thick and golden, richer than before. The dungeon smelled sweet. Angelica leaned in. "By the king," she whispered. "I've never seen milk like that." "Try it," Marissa said. She lifted the jar. "You earned the first taste, not him." Angelica took the jar. Her fingers brushed Marissa's and stayed there. She drank. Her eyes closed. When she lowered the jar, a line of cream sat on her lip. Marissa reached up without thinking. She wiped the cream away with her thumb. Angelica caught her wrist, gentle this time, not like the chains. "Careful," Angelica said, but she did not let go. Her breath came faster. The two women knelt close in the roses at the foot of the dark bed. "You cut me loose," Marissa said. "Nobody else did." "I would do it again," Angelica said. She pulled Marissa closer by the wrist. Their mouths met. The kiss was slow, then hard. Marissa's hands found the knight's red hair. Angelica's armor pressed cold against her. Neither pulled back. The machine hummed on beside them, forgotten. When they broke apart, both breathed heavy. Angelica pressed her forehead to Marissa's. "This changes things," she said. "I guard the king. He wants your milk for his harem. If he learns of this—" She stopped. Marissa's chest went tight. She had come to serve the king. Now she wanted this instead. "Then he can't know," she said. "Not yet." Angelica stood and helped her up. "He waits above. He expects a dairy maid, not—" She looked at Marissa. "Not whatever you are to me now." She picked up the mended machine. "I'll take you to him. But we hide this. One wrong word and he takes you as a wife. Then I lose you." Marissa gathered the jar. Her hands shook. She had a working machine again and a knight at her side. She also had a secret that could ruin them both. "Then we lie to a king," she said. Angelica nodded and led her toward the stair.

Chapter 4

Angelica led Marissa up the stair and into the throne room. Red and gold banners hung from the high windows, each marked with a heart. Marissa carried her jar and pushed the milk machine on its wheels. Her hands still shook from the dungeon. She fixed her eyes on the throne ahead and rehearsed the lie. The king sat on a great gold chair heaped with rose petals. Blake Wilding wore a red robe open to his chest, gold chains stacked on his skin. He watched Marissa cross the floor. A slow smile spread under his dark beard. Angelica stopped a step behind Marissa and kept her face blank. But Marissa felt the knight go stiff at her shoulder. "Your majesty," Marissa said. She lifted the jar. "I came a long way to bring you this. My milk. There is none like it in the land." She poured a thick golden stream into a cup and held it out. "Drink, and you'll see." Blake did not take the cup. He leaned forward and looked her over, from her horns to her boots. "The milk is fine," he said. "But I want the cow." He rose from the petals and stepped down. "A source like you belongs in my house. I'll make you my wife. Then I drink from you every morning for the rest of my days." Marissa's stomach dropped. She had come to serve one cup. Now he wanted to own her. Behind her, Angelica's gauntlet closed hard on her sword grip. The king caught the sound and turned. "My guard," Blake said. "You brought her to me. Why do you grip your blade?" Marissa spoke fast, before Angelica could ruin them both. "She guards your prize, majesty. There's a witch loose in your castle. She tried to steal my milk in the dungeon." She let the fear into her voice, and it was real. "Take the milk. Please. But I'm no wife. I'm just a dairy maid." Blake studied her. He took the cup at last and drank. His eyes went wide. He drained it and licked the rim. "By every heart on these walls," he said. "You'll pour this for me forever." He set the cup down. "A dairy maid is a fine thing to own. But a wife is finer. I've decided. The wedding is at dusk." He waved a hand. "Guard. Take her to a room and lock the door. See she doesn't wander." Angelica bowed her head. "Yes, majesty." Her voice held steady. She gripped Marissa's arm and marched her from the hall. In the corridor, out of the king's sight, Angelica's grip turned gentle. She leaned close. "He drank it," she whispered. "That was the plan. But now he's marrying you by dusk." Her jaw tightened. "We have until then to get you out."

Chapter 5

Angelica locked the door and hooked Marissa to the milk machine. "One last batch," she whispered. "We fill the jar, then we run before dusk." The rounded cups sealed to Marissa's skin. The machine hummed and pulled. Golden milk climbed the clear hoses. Marissa gripped the bed frame and watched the door. She knew Agatha wanted this milk. She knew a witch could return in a breath of purple smoke. The smoke came. It curled up from the floor and thickened into a woman. Agatha stepped free of it, tall in her black and gold gown, white hair falling loose. This was the witch who had lured Marissa to the dungeon days ago and tried to bleed her dry. Her painted lips curved. "There you are, little dairy cow. Hooked up and helpless." She reached for the full hoses. "I'll take the milk and the machine." Marissa yanked at the cups, but the seals held her fast. "Angelica!" she cried. The knight was already moving. Angelica drew her sword and stepped between Marissa and the witch. "Not again," she said. Her red hair swung as she swung the blade. Agatha threw up a hand and the strike shrieked off an unseen wall. Sparks jumped. The witch laughed and grabbed a fistful of hose. "You drive me off once and think it done," Agatha said. "The milk rules this kingdom. It will be mine." Marissa saw the jar was nearly full. That milk was her only bargaining chip, the thing the king wanted, the thing keeping her alive until dusk. If Agatha stole it now, Marissa had nothing. She stopped fighting the cups and grabbed the jar instead. She clutched it to her chest. Agatha lunged for it. Angelica lunged too. The knight drove her shoulder into the witch and knocked her off balance. Agatha's heel skidded on the stone. Angelica hooked the heart-shaped guard of her blade under the witch's arm and shoved. Agatha crashed against the bed, roses scattering across the floor. "You want her milk?" Angelica snarled. "You'll die first." She raised the sword over the witch's throat. Agatha's face twisted. She could not win this fight. Purple smoke boiled up from her gown. "This is not over," she spat. "The king marries me, cow, not you. I'll be back for what's mine." The smoke swallowed her whole. She was gone. Marissa slumped against the headboard, the jar safe in her arms. Angelica ripped the cups from her skin and pulled her free. They both breathed hard. "She said she'll marry the king," Marissa whispered. "She wants the throne, and the milk, and me gone." Angelica looked at the scattered roses, then at the locked door. "Then dusk just got worse," she said. "The king wants you as a wife. So does the witch. And now she knows exactly where you are." She pulled Marissa to her feet. "We run now."

Chapter 6

Angelica hauled Marissa toward the door. Boots pounded in the hall outside. King Blake Wilding's voice boomed through the wood. "Open this door! The witch was seen here!" Angelica froze, sword still wet from the fight. Marissa clutched the jar of golden milk. The king filled the doorway when the lock gave. He wore his red robe and crown, and his eyes went straight to the milk. "My bride," he said. "And my milk. Neither leaves." Marissa saw two guards behind him. She saw the window across the room. She could not fight the king, and she could not run past him. Then her eyes fell on the milk machine and its curved hoses. An idea struck her, wild and desperate. The milk held power. The king had drunk one cup and roared with strength. What would happen if she took it all herself? "Angelica, buy me one minute," Marissa said. Angelica understood. She spun and swung her blade at the king's guards, driving them back into the hall. Marissa dropped to the machine. She sealed the cups to her skin, then twisted the dial hard the other way. The hoses reversed. Golden milk poured back into her body. Heat flooded her. Her arms swelled with muscle. Her hooves cracked the stone floor. The room shrank around her. She grew until her head brushed the ceiling. Power sang in her blood. She was not a captive now. She was strong enough to break the walls. Blake shoved past Angelica and stopped short. He stared up at Marissa, mouth open. "What have you become?" he whispered. Marissa ripped the cups free. She grabbed Angelica with one huge hand and pulled her close. Then she turned and drove her shoulder into the outer wall. Stone burst outward. Dust and banners rained down. A hole gaped where the wall had stood, open sky beyond it. "Hold on to me," Marissa said. Angelica gripped her arm. Marissa stepped through the broken wall and leapt. The ground rushed up. Her hooves hit hard and cracked the earth, but she stood. Above, the king shouted from the ragged gap. His guards crowded beside him and did not dare jump. Marissa ran. Each stride carried them far from the castle gate. The red and gold banners shrank behind her. Angelica laughed against her shoulder, breathless. "You did it," she said. "You got us out." Marissa slowed at a treeline and set Angelica down. The power began to fade. Her body shrank back to its own size. Her legs shook. The milk was gone now, all of it burned to fuel the escape. She had no jar, no batch, nothing left to bargain with. "We're free," Marissa said. Then she looked at her empty hands. The king still wanted her milk. The witch still wanted the throne. And she had just spent every drop she owned.

Chapter 7

By dusk Marissa and Angelica reached an empty barn. It stood far from the castle, with wide stalls and a rusted milking setup along one wall. Marissa pushed the door shut and dropped a beam across it. Her legs still shook from the long run. She had no milk left, no plan, and two enemies hunting her. But the barn was quiet, and for the first time all day, no one chased them. Angelica set her sword against the wall. She pulled off her steel gloves and flexed her fingers. "We're safe here tonight," she said. "They can't track us in the dark." She crossed the floor and took Marissa's hand. "You carried me through a stone wall. Stop shaking. Look at me." Marissa looked. In the castle they had hidden every glance and lie about their bond. Here no king watched. No witch listened. Angelica stepped close, her red hair loose around her shoulders. She smiled the way she never dared in front of guards. "No more pretending," she said. "Just us." Marissa laughed for the first time in days. Someone had left an old dance pole bolted to a beam in the corner, painted bright and strange. Angelica grabbed it and spun, boots clicking on the wood. "Come here, farm girl," she teased. Marissa followed. They fell together onto a pile of clean hay, and the fear washed out of her. Angelica kissed her slow. Their hands found each other in the dark. For one whole night, the milk and the king and the throne did not matter. Only warmth mattered, and skin, and the steady beat of two hearts that finally stopped hiding. Morning light came through the barn slats. Marissa woke first, tangled in Angelica's arms, calm at last. Then she saw it. Along the far wall stood the rusted milking rig she had ignored the night before. And beside it, three fat cows chewed hay in the stalls. This was a working dairy farm, abandoned but whole. Her heart pounded. She sat up fast. "Angelica, wake up." Marissa shook her shoulder. "Look. This place makes milk." Angelica blinked and rose on one elbow. Marissa pointed at the cows, then at herself. "My milk grew me huge. But what if I could make more? Not spend it running. Grow it here, batch after batch, until I have enough to face the king on my own terms." Angelica sat all the way up. Her smile faded into something serious. "You mean feed the king his milk," she said slowly. "The thing he crossed a kingdom for. Give it to him yourself." "On my terms," Marissa said. "Not his cage. Not the witch's hands. Mine." She stood and walked to the rig. The gears were stiff but they turned. She had lost everything in the escape. Now she had found a farm, and a way to make it all back. The night of hiding was over. The work started today.

Chapter 8

Morning light filled the barn. Marissa stood at the milking rig and rolled her shoulders. The machine sat waiting, its hoses coiled and cups clean. Last night she had a plan. Today she had to prove it worked. "I make the milk myself," she told Angelica. "Enough to face the king on my terms." She pulled the cups closer and reached for the switch. Angelica crossed the floor and knelt beside the machine. She was the red-haired knight who had turned on the king to run with Marissa. Now she checked each hose with careful hands. "The seals held when we fixed it," she said. "But you burned every drop breaking that wall. You're empty. This will hurt." She looked up. "I'll stay right here." Marissa fitted the cups against her body. She flipped the switch. The central body hummed. The machine pulled, slow at first, then hard. Marissa gripped the frame. Nothing came. Her chest ached. She gasped and shut her eyes. "Breathe," Angelica said. She pressed one hand flat against Marissa's back. "Think of the cows. Think of home." Marissa breathed. She thought of green fields and warm mornings. Slowly the ache changed. Warmth rose through her. A thin gold thread slid down the clear hose. Then more. The milk ran bright, brighter than any milk should be. It caught the light like liquid coin. "There," Angelica whispered. "Look at it." The hoses filled. The machine drew steady now, and Marissa fed it. She poured everything she had into the pull. Minutes passed. Her legs shook. Sweat ran down her neck. She would not stop. She thought of the king who wanted her caged. She thought of the witch who wanted her dead. She made milk until she had nothing left to give. At last she flipped the switch off. She sagged against Angelica. The glass jar under the rig held bright gold milk, nearly full. It was the largest batch she had ever made. Her whole body burned, but she laughed. "We did it," she said. "One batch. We can make more." Angelica held up the jar. Then her smile fell. She pointed at the gold surface. It quivered on its own. As they watched, the milk sank in the glass. The bright color dulled at the edges. "It's fading," Angelica said. "Same as your strength did. The power doesn't keep." Marissa stared. The milk still glowed, but weaker now. She understood. She could not store batches for weeks. The magic drained the moment it left her body. To face the king with full power, she needed the milk fresh, and she needed to reach him fast. She wiped her face and stood straight. "Then we don't wait," she said. "We make one strong batch and go. Before it dies." Angelica nodded and reached for her sword. The safe hiding was over. The road to the castle started now.

Chapter 9

The castle rose ahead, its towers hung with red and gold banners. Marissa clutched the fresh jar to her chest. The milk still glowed, but the color already dulled at the edges. She had made this batch to face the king on her own terms. Now she saw the gate, and the guards moving on the walls. "We don't have long," she told Angelica. "The magic dies while we stand here." She quickened her steps. They never reached the gate. Boots pounded the ground behind them. A blonde knight blocked their path, heart-shaped sword raised. Marissa knew her. Lilith had stood at this gate the first day, testing Marissa's milk before letting her pass. Now Lilith's eyes were cold. "Fugitives," she said. "The king wants you back." More guards closed in from both sides. Angelica drew her sword and stepped in front of Marissa. "You'll have to go through me, Lilith." The two knights had once served together. Now they faced each other as enemies. Lilith did not blink. "There are ten of us," she said. "Drop it." Angelica's grip tightened. Marissa touched her arm. "No," Marissa whispered. "Not like this. We fight, we lose the milk." Angelica held for one long breath. Then she lowered her blade. The guards took their weapons. They marched Marissa and Angelica through the gate, across a wide floor of colored tile, and into the throne room. King Blake Wilding rose from his seat. His red robe hung open over his chest. He smiled wide when he saw Marissa. "My runaway bride," he said. "You came back to me." Marissa lifted her chin. The jar still sat cradled in her arms. Its glow had faded further, but power lived in it yet. She had a choice. She could beg, or she could bargain. She stepped forward before the guards could stop her. "I didn't come as your prisoner," she said. "I came to offer you this. Fresh. At full strength. But only if you hear me." Blake's eyes dropped to the jar. Hunger crossed his face. He remembered the last cup. "You know I want more than one cup," he said. "I want you. Forever." Marissa held the jar higher. "The milk fades the moment it leaves me," she said. "You can't store it. You can't steal it. Cage me and it dies with my fear. You get nothing." She watched him weigh her words. Blake sat back down slowly. He waved the guards off. "Then we talk," he said. "Pour me a cup, and speak your terms." Marissa knelt and poured. The gold ran thin but bright. He drank. His whole body shook with the rush. "Yes," he breathed. "Yes." But before Marissa could speak her terms, a side door swung open. A curvy woman with white hair swept in on the king's arm, smiling. Marissa's stomach dropped. The witch Agatha had beaten her to the throne. And the king called her his wife.

Chapter 10

Marissa stared at the white-haired woman on the king's arm. She knew that smile. It was Agatha, the thousand-year-old witch who wanted the milk and the throne. Now she stood dressed as a queen, her hand curled tight around Blake. Something was wrong with the king. His eyes had gone flat and glassy. He drank Marissa's milk moments ago, yet he did not look at her. He looked only at Agatha, like a man walking in his sleep. "Blake," Marissa said. "Look at me." He did not turn. Agatha laughed and stroked his cheek. "He can't hear you, cow girl. He hears only me now." A green light flickered in her eyes. Marissa understood. Agatha had put the king under a spell. That was why he took the witch as his wife. He was not choosing. He was bound. Angelica lunged, but two guards caught her arms. "Marissa, do something!" she shouted. Marissa's jar sat empty at the king's feet. She had no milk left to pour. But the milk lived inside her still. It always had. She closed her eyes and reached for that power in her chest. Marissa drank the last drops from her own jar. Warmth flooded her body. Her muscles swelled. Her horns gleamed. She grew until her head nearly brushed the banners, and her strength returned like a flood. Super cowgirl again. Agatha's smile broke. "No," the witch hissed. "You have nothing left!" She raised her hands to cast. Marissa did not give her the chance. Golden milk burst from her, spraying from her mouth, her eyes, from every part of her at once. The stream hit Blake full in the chest. It hit Agatha beside him. The king gasped as the gold washed over him. The glass drained from his eyes. He blinked, awake, staring at the witch on his arm as if seeing her for the first time. Agatha screamed. The milk struck her disguise and cracked it. Her young skin peeled away. Beneath it showed the truth, a thousand years old and withered. "My beauty!" she shrieked. Purple smoke swallowed her. When it cleared, she was gone. Banished from the castle. Blake fell to his knees, wet and shaking. The guards let Angelica go and stepped back. Marissa shrank slowly to her own size as the power faded. Blake wiped his face. He looked at Marissa with clear eyes at last. "You freed me," he said. "That thing had me chained." He rose and crossed the tile floor. "I owe you my crown." Marissa caught her breath. Angelica ran to her side and took her hand. The witch was gone. The king was free. But Blake's gaze had not softened at all. It sharpened, fixed on Marissa with the old hunger. "Now," he said, smiling, "about that marriage."
