Chapter 1

Master Roshi wanted a student who could one day beat him. He had spent his life teaching the Turtle School's way, and he was old now, his hair gone gray. He had techniques no one had ever learned from him. So when the boy came back a fourth day, Roshi finally stopped pretending he hadn't noticed. The boy was Kenzo Mizuhara, and he worked harder than anyone Roshi had taken in years. Roshi had judged him in the first five minutes: real talent, real hunger. For three weeks Roshi ran him through drills on the sand near the house. Push-ups. Sprints through the surf. Kicks against a hanging tire. This morning Kenzo finished the last drill and stood breathing hard. "Give me something harder," he said. "I can do all of this with my eyes shut." Roshi knew he was right. That was the problem. The boy had outgrown every drill Roshi owned. There was no beam to balance on, no proper ground to test him. A student who only ran easy drills would quit from boredom. Roshi had lost a student before, one who trained two years and then walked away without a word. He never knew why. He would not lose this one the same way. So Roshi built what he lacked. He dragged planks up from under the house. He sank posts into the sand and lashed rope between them. He stacked old truck tires in a row. He raised a low beam and a high beam for balance work, and set a long bench for weighted drills. It took two full days. His shoulders ached in a way they hadn't in a long time. When it was done, he had a real training ground on the shore. Sand floor. Rope rails. Climbing frames and tires and beams. A place where a student could finally be pushed. He called Kenzo over. The boy walked the edge of the field, touching the rope, testing the high beam with one foot. "Now you can't do it with your eyes shut," Roshi said. "Show me the tire run. All of them. Then the high beam." Kenzo grinned and attacked the course. He tore through the tires. He leapt to the high beam, crossed it, dropped, and spun into a clean strike. He was fast. He was better than fast. Roshi watched and felt the old fear come back, the one he never wanted a student to see. The boy learned too quickly. In a week he would master this ground too. Kenzo landed and turned, barely winded. "What's next, Master?" Roshi looked at his hands. Drills could not answer that question anymore. The boy was ready for a real technique, one Roshi had never trusted anyone to hold. The kind that could break a student who wasn't ready. "Tomorrow," Roshi said, "I teach you something that can hurt you."
