Chapter 1

Merry Claus wanted to give every child in the world a new reason to wait for Christmas. She had wanted it since she baked six dozen cookies for her own delivery route last year, and the elves swept the basket onto their list before she finished. Now she sat at her desk in Castle Claus, tearing up sketches. Her latest one hit the pile. A stocking with lights in it. She crumpled the one before that too. A tree you decorate on a different day. None of it was new. All of it was Christmas wearing a different hat. Bright stood by the window with his hands in his coat pockets. He had read every page over her shoulder without a word. "Say it," Merry told him. "They're all copies," Bright said. "You know that." She did know. That was the whole problem. She reached for the quill again, then dropped it. Her head felt stuffed and loud. She needed to walk. Merry pulled on her red coat and went out into the snow. Bright followed, because he always did. She walked fast along the castle wall, breathing cold air, waiting for her mind to clear. It did not. Every idea that came was a gift, a song, a light. All of it already belonged to her father. A red cardinal dropped out of the dark and landed on the fence ahead. It cocked its head at her, then flew off a short way and waited. Merry stopped walking. "It wants us to follow," Bright said. The bird led them to the kitchen door. Through the glass, Merry saw her mother at the counter, flour to her elbows, scowling at an old card. Mary Claus had been fighting that one recipe for years. Her grandmother's. The one nobody ever wrote down right. Merry went inside. "Any luck?" "No," Mary said. She did not look up. "My grandmother never measured. She just knew. I keep guessing." She set the card down. "Some things only live in the person who made them." Merry stared at the card. At the loops of faded handwriting no one else could read. That was it. "I've been trying to invent a thing," Merry said slowly. "A toy. A song. But those already exist. What doesn't exist is this." She pointed at the card. "Every family has a recipe nobody wrote down. A story only Grandma knows. Those die when she does." Bright turned from the door. "So you save them." "Every child mails in one family thing no one else knows," Merry said. Her hands shook. "And Christmas morning, it comes back written down. Theirs forever." She grabbed a clean sheet and wrote across the top: Keepsakes. Mary wiped her hands and read it. "That's not a copy of anything." "No," Merry said. "It's mine." Then the weight of it landed. Millions of families. Millions of secrets. And no one at the North Pole collected a single word from the children. Only toy lists. Merry would need something that did not exist yet, and no idea how to build it.
