Chapter 1

Michelle should have been on a stage tonight, singing beside her twin. Instead she lay curled on a pile of blankets on the bathroom floor of the RV she and Hayden shared. She and Hayden had the same stomach illness, Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome. It made her sick without warning. Tonight it had a stomach bug on top of it, and it kept her flat while the concert went on somewhere without her. Her whole goal was simple. She wanted to sing in front of people, again and again, without her stomach stopping her. Right now her stomach was winning. She dragged herself up over the little cottage-style tub and got sick again. Her arms shook. The small window let in gray light. She had nothing left to give up, and still it came. Someone knocked, then opened the door. Fallon and Faye stepped in. Lucy Gray's girls. Their two sisters, Fawn and Finnley, were down with the flu, so these two had promised to check on her. They wore their prairie dresses. Both looked pale. "You're worse than us," Faye said. "We're just reflux. I should have come sooner." Faye set a folded map and a small bag on the vanity, then knelt by the tub. Fallon crouched on Michelle's other side without a word. Michelle heard her belch, wince, and swallow it down. They were sick too, but they had come anyway. "We don't have medicine," Fallon said. "Just us." Michelle tried to answer and got sick instead. Faye held her hair back and rubbed slow circles on her spine. Fallon soaked a cloth in the sink and pressed it to Michelle's neck. "I can't stop," Michelle whispered. "I was supposed to sing tonight." "You couldn't," Faye said. "Not like this. No one could." Faye said it plain, without pity, and it helped more than soft words would have. Fallon belched again, pressed her own stomach, and kept the cloth steady on Michelle's neck. Neither girl left. The hours passed on the bathroom floor. The two sisters traded jobs. One held her up. One cleaned the tub, fetched water, wet the cloth again. Michelle sipped and lost it and sipped again. Slowly the gaps between grew longer. The heaving eased. Her body went limp and quiet. Michelle slept a little against Faye's shoulder. When she woke, her stomach was empty but still. The worst had passed. She had ridden it out, held up by two sick girls who never once complained. "You need a real healer," Faye said, tucking a blanket around her. "This will come back. Comfort isn't enough for what you have." Fallon nodded. "Lindy. Two towns over." Michelle knew they were right. Blankets and cold cloths had gotten her through one night. They would not get her onto a stage. If she wanted to sing beside Hayden without her stomach stopping her, she needed the same thing Hayden did. She had to find Lindy.
