Chapter 1

Mindy R wanted the ranch back, and the proof was locked behind a steel door she wasn't allowed to open. The banker had taken her family's land three years ago. He'd shown a court a stack of papers her father never signed. Everyone believed him because he had documents and her family had none. That was the trap. Without proof he'd forged the deed, no judge would hear her. She stood in the hallway of the bank's records wing before dawn. Five heavy doors lined the wall, each marked with cold labels: Records Room 1, Archives, Secure Files. The cleaning crew let her in with a mop bucket and a borrowed badge. She had one hour before the clerks arrived. Her boots squeaked on the polished floor. She pulled her blonde ponytail tight and tucked it into her collar. The yellow door in the center caught her eye. A small sign read Authorized Access Only. She'd watched the banker walk through that door alone, always alone. She tried the handle. Locked. Beside it hung a slim key box with a code pad. Her father had kept ledgers his whole life. He'd used the same four numbers on every lock: her birthday. She pressed them. The box clicked open. Inside sat one brass key. Her hands shook as she turned it. The yellow door swung wide. Rows of binders filled the shelves, each spine labeled in the banker's neat print. She ran her finger along the dates until she found the year her family lost everything. She yanked the binder free and opened it on the floor. There it was. Two versions of the deed. One showed her father's real signature, loose and slanted. The other showed a signature drawn slow and careful, a copy. Clipped behind them, the banker had kept a note in his own hand. It listed the fee he'd paid a forger. He'd saved the evidence to protect himself, never thinking anyone would reach it. Mindy folded both deeds and the note into her shirt. Her heart pounded. She had proof now. Real proof. No judge could laugh her out of court with these papers in her hand. Then the hallway lights snapped on. Voices carried through the wall. The clerks had come early. She spun toward the yellow door and saw a shape pass the frosted glass, tall, in a pressed coat. The banker himself. She pressed her back to the shelves. The key still hung in the open box outside, in plain sight. He would see it. He would know someone had been inside. And he would know exactly which papers were missing. Mindy had her proof. But now the man who'd stolen her ranch knew she was coming for it.
