Chapter 1

Mookey found the shape half-buried near the cattails where the ground turned soft. Another hand, like itself, but wrong somehow. The fingers were there, curled just right, but they didn't move when Mookey touched them. No warmth. No noticing. Just mud that had decided to stay mud. Mookey pressed its own palm flat against the dormant fist. It tried to remember its own beginning—the moment the cold became warm, when noticing first happened. Had something touched it that day? Had the swamp decided differently for this one, or had this hand simply missed the moment? Mookey stood there a long time, hoping the other hand might suddenly feel the difference between cold and warm. But nothing changed. The swamp had sorted them into different piles, and Mookey finally understood that being shaped wasn't enough. Something else had to happen after. Mookey walked back to where the dark tar pit sat between two cypress roots. The surface was still, but finger trails marked the edges—dozens of them, all different sizes. Someone had shaped hands here, many hands, pulling them from the tar and setting them out to wait. Most of the trails led away into the swamp. A few led nowhere at all. Mookey looked down at its own muddy palm and understood the question it needed to answer: not why it was shaped, but what made some shapes wake up while others never did. That's when Mookey saw the train whistle half-buried in the mud near the tar pit. The metal was old and covered in moss, like it had been there since before Mookey woke up. It sat exactly where the awakened trails began, where the mud hands had been when they first noticed. The dormant hand by the cattails was far from here, far from the whistle. Mookey picked up the metal thing and felt its weight. The swamp hadn't decided which hands woke—something about this whistle had. The sound, maybe, or the warmth of the metal when the train passed. Mookey held it tight and knew where to search next.
