Chapter 1

Mother invented Stickman Family to save her kids from road-trip boredom, and now the game was about to hurt them. The rules were simple. When Stacey or Paul spotted a stickman family sticker on a bumper, they made up that family's whole life. Jobs. Pets. Secrets. Mother laughed along for months. Then, on the drive home, Paul pointed at a van ahead and said the dad in the sticker beat his kids. Stacey giggled. Mother's hands tightened on the wheel. The game had crossed a line. She just could not name the line. At dinner she tried to stop it and failed. "No more sad stories," she said. "Why?" Paul asked. She had no answer. "Sad is a story," Stacey said, and she was right. Mother realized her problem. She could not judge what crossed the family's boundaries, because nobody had ever written the boundaries down. She was guessing. Every ruling felt unfair, and the kids saw it. So she called a family meeting. Father dragged in the whiteboard from the garage. He was her husband, the calm one, the parent who let arguments run until they solved themselves. He handed her a marker without a word. "You start," he said. "They'll trust it more if it's theirs." Mother wrote one word at the top. RULES. Then she asked the kids what a stickman family should never do. Stacey went first. "No hurting the kids." Mother wrote it. Paul crossed his arms. "But mysteries are fun. The pea pod family could have a scary barn." Father leaned in. "Scary is fine. Cruel is not. What's the difference, Paul?" Paul thought hard. "Scary means you don't know yet. Cruel means somebody's already hurt." Mother stopped writing. Her son had just handed her the line she could not find. They kept going. No real people. No families they actually knew. Nothing that would scare Stacey at bedtime. Father made them test each rule out loud until it was clear. By the end the whiteboard held seven rules, all in the kids' own words. Mother read them back. For the first time, she could point to a sentence instead of a feeling. Stacey wanted to keep it. Mother copied the list onto a card and taped it to the van's dashboard, near the smiling painted face. "Now the game protects itself," she said. Paul grinned. "So we can still do the scary barn?" "If it follows the card," Mother said. He was already inventing. That night Mother felt the weight lift. She had her list. Then Paul spoke from the back seat on the next drive. "Stacey broke rule four. She made up a real family. The one next door." Stacey went quiet. Mother looked in the mirror. The rules were clear now. That was the problem. Someone had broken one, and both kids were watching to see what she would do.
