Chapter 1

Nathan Roberts wanted the village to belong to him, and it never knew he existed. From his estate outside its borders, he had spent years steering it with quiet favors and whispered advice. Now a mob stood at his gate. Torches lit the cracked stone of his manor walls. The villagers had traced their panic to him, and panic was loud, and loud things got noticed. The cause stood at the tree line, as she had for thirty years. Elara Moss, tall and gaunt, her green dress rotted to rags. She never blinked. That morning she had broken her long silence and demanded a village child by nightfall. A mother's daughter, if the village would not choose. The village had chosen instead to blame the man in the manor, though they could not say why they suspected him. Nathan sent for Stephanie before the sun set. She was his childer, the one he had turned, and she moved through his land freely so long as her work served him. She arrived without a wasted step. "They think you started this," she said. "You didn't." "No. But their noise will bring outsiders. I need it quiet by morning." Stephanie looked at the crowd, then at the still woman under the willows. Their glowing sap ran green through the bark like veins. "Elara's bound to a pact," she said. "Someone left a hair cord in her spot. It forces her to answer." She did not explain how she knew. She rarely did. "Then remove the demand," Nathan said. He let a pause open. He wanted her to reach it herself. "What breaks the compulsion?" Stephanie's mouth twitched. "The cord. Take it, the demand ends." She caught his silence and gave him a flat look. "You already knew that." "I wanted you to say it." She went. Nathan turned to the gate and raised his hands. He told the crowd the truth would come from the trees. He named no plan. He only pointed them toward Elara and let their fear pull them there. Stephanie reached the spot first. She dug the braided cord from the roots and snapped it. Elara's head turned for the first time in thirty years. The demand died in her throat. She stepped back into the dark and was gone. The crowd found nothing but empty ground. Their anger had no target now, and it drained fast. They drifted home confused, the child forgotten, the manor already slipping from their minds. Stephanie returned holding the broken cord. "Done. Nobody died." "You led with the result," Nathan said. "Good." She held up the cord. "This wasn't Elara's doing. Someone made this. Someone who wants the village afraid." She dropped it in his palm. "You have a rival, Nathan. And they know the same tricks you do."

Chapter 2

The broken cord lay on Nathan's desk three nights later. He had turned it over a hundred times. The braid held colors no village dye could make. A neat charm hung from the tassel. Whoever wove it knew his craft. But the cord told him nothing about the hand that made it. His rival struck from the dark, and Nathan could not name him. So he went to the one who had held it first. Elara Moss stood under the willows where she always stood. Thirty years of stillness had ended when the cord bound her, and now she moved again, though barely. The glowing sap ran green through the bark above her. Her black eyes fixed on Nathan without blinking. He had steered a whole village for years and never once faced her. She frightened him, and he did not let it show. "You wore the demand," Nathan said. "You felt the maker's will. I want the hand behind it." Elara did not answer at once. When she spoke, her voice cracked from disuse. "You come to me. The village comes to me. All of you want the same thing. Someone to blame." She tilted her head. "The cord smelled of blood. A drop, smeared on the charm. Fresh." "Whose blood?" "Not mine. Not the mother's." She raised one thin arm and pointed past him, toward the tree line where an owl sat watching. Its yellow eyes glowed steady in the dark. "It watched the one who tied it. It watches you now." Nathan turned. The owl did not move. He understood then. The bird was no bird. His rival had left eyes in the trees, the way Nathan left favors in the village. He had been observed the whole time. "You knew," Nathan said. "You knew and said nothing for thirty years." "No one asked," Elara said. "They only feared me." She stepped back into the shadow of the branches. "The blood was a woman's. Young. Cold, like yours. She smells of your house." Cold blood. A vampire. Young. Someone tied to his own estate. Nathan's mind went to the one childer he trusted, and then away from her, because Elara had not named Stephanie. The rival was another of his kind. Perhaps one he had turned. Perhaps one who had survived when he thought her lost. Nathan looked back at the owl. He walked toward it slow. It let him come within an arm's reach, then lifted off without a sound and flew north, past his own walls, into the hills he did not control. He had his answer. The rival was a vampire, young, bound to his household by blood. She had watched him rule from the shadows and meant to take the shadows for herself. Nathan turned toward the manor. He no longer fought an unknown hand. He hunted a name he almost knew.

The owl still watched. Nathan had followed it north once and lost it in the hills. Now it perched in the ivy above his own gate, yellow eyes fixed on his door. Every night he left the manor, it lifted off and flew toward the ridge. Every plan he made to grow his network reached his rival before dawn. He could not build in the open while those eyes reported each move. So he stopped hunting the bird. He went to the woman who tied blood into rope. Deidra Arlan met him at a crumbling countryside manor beyond his walls. Cracked stone and a sagging roof, ivy through broken shutters. She had made the cord that reinstated Elara's pact. Nathan had never trusted her, and he did not now. She sat in the ruined hall like she owned it, turning a small charm between her fingers. "The vampire lord," she said. Her smile did not reach her green eyes. "You built a whole village on secrets. Now something keeps yours for you." She nodded toward the doorway. The owl had followed. It settled on a broken sill and stared in. "You bind things," Nathan said. "You called Elara off her path and held her at a threshold. I want that owl held. Not killed. Bound to me." Deidra tilted her head. "Binding costs. Blood, and a favor I name later." Nathan cut his palm on a shard of stone. He held the wound over the charm in her hand. His cold blood ran into the braid. "Take it. Name your favor when you dare." She worked fast. Her fingers threaded his blood through the cord's knot while she whispered under her breath. The owl shifted on the sill. It spread its wings to fly. Deidra pulled the knot tight. The bird froze mid-lift, claws locked to the wood, unable to cross. "It cannot leave," she said. "And it cannot send. The eyes are yours now." Nathan stepped to the sill. The owl glared but could not move. He understood at once what this bought him. His rival had watched him for weeks. Tonight the watching stopped, and the rival did not know it. Every report would simply cease. She would wait in her hidden room for news that never arrived. "Feed it false paths," Nathan told Deidra. "Let it seem to watch. Let it carry what I choose." Deidra's smile widened. "You want a lie with wings." "I want my rival blind while I move." Nathan lifted the bound bird onto his arm. Its glowing eyes met his without fear. For the first time since the cord appeared on his desk, he was not the one being read. He carried the owl back through his gate. Behind him, Deidra watched him go, still turning the charm. She held his blood in a knot now. The favor she had not named waited between them, unpaid.
