Chapter 1

Nellie the Nurse pressed her thumb to a feverish forehead and knew the town was in trouble. The boy had waited three days before his mother brought him in. Three days of coughing near the market, the bakery, the school. Nellie smoothed her pink scrubs and did the math. One sick child hidden at home could seed a whole street. Her job was to keep the town safe from viruses, and she was losing to a simple problem: nobody told her they were sick until it was too late. She walked to the clinic that afternoon, a pale blue cottage with a clean white sign. Dollie the Doctor stood at the front desk, curly hair pushed back, sorting patient files. Nellie had worked beside her for two years. Dollie trusted numbers. Nellie trusted people. "Three new fevers this week," Nellie said. "All caught them from someone who never called us." Dollie set down a file. "I can't be everywhere. I can barely track the ones who show up." "Then we stop waiting for them to show up." Nellie pulled a folded paper from her bag and spread it on the desk. It was a bright chart, rows and columns in rainbow colors, one box for each day of the week. "Every house gets one. Cough, fever, sore throat. They mark a box each morning and text me a photo. I see the trouble before it walks in the door." Dollie studied the grid. "People won't bother." "They will if it's easy. Stickers. Colors. Kids love it." Nellie tapped Monday's row. "If four houses on one street light up red, we know before it spreads." Dollie was quiet. Then she picked up her pen and signed the corner of the chart. "Print a hundred. I'll tell every patient who comes in." Nellie spent the evening at the copier. By morning she had a stack of charts and a route in her head. She knocked on doors, handed out sheets, showed a grandmother how to snap a photo. By dusk her phone held forty check-ins. Most boxes were empty. Two glowed red on the same block. She called Dollie. "Two fevers, one street. I'm going now." The system worked. For the first time, Nellie could see illness coming instead of chasing it. She drove home that night proud and tired. Her phone buzzed at eleven. Then again. Then it would not stop. She stared at the screen. Nine new red boxes, scattered across nine different streets. Not one block. Not one source. The photos showed the same three symptoms in every corner of town at once. Nellie sat down hard on her step. Her chart had done its job too well. It had shown her the truth she feared most. This was no single sick child. Something was already everywhere.
