Chapter 1

Nicola crouched on a curved bank of small, smooth rocks and pressed one scaled ear to the water. The flame's heartbeat came through faint, slower than her own. She was a unicorn-raven, feathers and scales, born from this river when it still burned bright enough to hurt the eyes. Her kind had faded with the flame. She was the only one left who could still hear it, and she meant to wake it before the sound went out. The river had turned against her. Upstream, black water pooled around cracked stones lit from beneath by red embers. Dark-adapted things lived in that stretch now. They had claimed the deep channels, and their claim thickened the water like oil. Every year the flame's pulse grew quieter under their weight. This morning it was the softest she had ever heard. She waded in up to her chest. The current pushed hard. Further down, the river narrowed and spun into a wide, slow spiral — a whirlpool that dragged sound into itself and gave nothing back. If she crossed into that pull, the heartbeat would drown, and she would not find the flame again by ear alone. She had maybe an hour before the noise swallowed the signal for good. She drew the tuning fork from the harness across her back. It was a small trident, etched with fine lines, given to her by the twin she still called Riverspark. She struck it against a wet stone. The prongs sang one clean note. She held the shaft under the surface and closed her eyes. The note found the flame. She felt the pulse climb back into her chest, steady as a second heart. She began to walk downstream, fork submerged, matching each step to the beat. Then something rose in front of her — a tall shape of dark water and silt, shoulders wide, eyes pale. It did not speak. It reached for the fork. She jerked the trident up out of the water and slashed. The prongs cut through the shape and it fell apart into current, but the note broke. The heartbeat vanished. She stood in silence to her chest, and for one long moment she thought she had lost it. She struck the fork again, harder. The note returned. Under it, thin but certain, the flame answered. She locked onto the pulse and did not let go. She turned her back on the whirlpool and moved upstream, into the red-lit water the dark things had claimed, because that was where the heartbeat led now. She had traded the safe bank for the fork's tether. She could follow the flame as long as the note held. She could not stop walking, and she could not go home.

Chapter 2

Nicola waded on, fork submerged, the flame's pulse tapping in her chest. The red-lit water thickened around her legs. Her own glow, faint as it was, still showed her — a pale smear of feather and scale in a black river. Shapes moved toward the light. She counted three, then five, then more. Long bodies slid under the surface. Pale eyes broke the water and sank again. She was the brightest thing here, and that was the problem. She stopped on a flat stone. If she kept walking lit, they would reach her before the next bend. If she doused her glow, she would lose the fork's rhythm and the heartbeat with it. She needed to hide the light without killing it. She pulled the folded cloth from her harness — a dark cloak given to her long ago, silvery-black, made to drink light and hold it close. She threw it over her shoulders. The hood swallowed her head. She felt her own shine press against the inside of the fabric and stay there. The water around her went dim. The pale eyes drifted, confused, searching where she had been. But hiding was not enough. One would find her by scent or sound, and she could not swing the tuning fork as a weapon without breaking the note again. She needed something else in her free hand. She pictured the flame she was walking toward. She pictured her own glow, the part of it she had spent her whole life carrying. She drew a slow breath and pulled that light out through her palm, the way you pull thread through a needle. It gathered. It hardened. A blade of cyan fire lit in her fist, humming like river water over stone, sparks trailing along its length. The cloak held her body glow in. The blade let out only what she chose to spend. The first shape came fast, jaws wide. She stepped and cut. The blade passed through it and the water hissed. The shape came apart. A second lunged from her left. She turned and cut again. Steam rose. The pale eyes pulled back. She walked. Cloak forward, blade low, fork under the surface in her other hand. The heartbeat kept time. The dark things followed at a distance now, watching, unwilling to close. She had bought herself the corridor she needed. At the next bend, the river opened into a wide black pool ringed with cracked stones. Embers pulsed red under the water at its center. The heartbeat here was louder than she had ever felt it, and slower. This was the place. The flame lay under that pool. She stopped at the edge. The cloak steamed. The blade sang in her hand. She had reached the door. She had not yet found how to open it.
