Chapter 1

Noxx wanted to choose her own love, and tonight her father meant to choose it for her. She woke to moonlight on her pillow and sat up, pulling a brush through her long black curls. A knock came at her door. Lola stepped in, braid swinging, her pumpkin-print apron rustling. "Your father waits in the throne room, miss," the maid said. She lingered, twisting her hands. "A messenger came. From another kingdom." Noxx set down her brush. Lola only wrung her hands like that when the news was bad. The throne room of Nightspire Keep swallowed every sound. Red light from the narrow windows striped the black floor. Count Vladimir Dracula stood at its center, her father, cape pooled behind him. His crimson eyes found her the moment she entered. In his pale hand he held a folded letter sealed with wax. "A suitor," he said. His voice filled the room without rising. "A lord from beyond our borders. He asks for your hand, Noxx. He has never seen your face." Noxx crossed the floor and stopped before him. "Then he asks for a stranger." "He asks for a Dracula." Vladimir turned the letter in his fingers. "That is enough for most men. His lands border ours. An alliance would secure both." He studied her. "You will meet him when he arrives." Noxx had waited years for love she chose herself. Not a seal on wax. Not a map stitched to a marriage. She lifted her chin. "I will not marry a letter, Father." The room seemed to hold its breath. Lola froze near the door. Vladimir's jaw tightened, and for a moment his fangs showed. "You would refuse before you have even met him?" "I would refuse any man who wants my name and not me." Noxx stepped closer. Her boots echoed. "Send him your answer. Tell him the daughter of Dracula chooses her own husband, or none." Silence. Vladimir looked at her a long time. Then, slowly, he smiled, and that frightened her more than anger. "Spoken like my blood." He crushed the letter in his fist. Wax cracked and fell to the floor. "Very well. I will not sell you to a man sight unseen." Noxx let out a breath. But her father was not finished. "Instead," he said, "I will invite every eligible lord in the land to Nightspire Keep. A gathering. You will walk among them, and you will choose one before the season ends." His red eyes gleamed. "You wanted the choice, daughter. Now you have it, and a deadline. Refuse them all, and I choose for you." The crushed letter lay between them. Noxx had won the fight and lost the war in a single breath. She had demanded true love. Now she had weeks to find it, or her father would decide what love meant. Lola met her eyes from the doorway. Neither of them spoke. The hunt had begun.

The hunt began tonight. Noxx stood at the top of the stairs and listened to the dining hall fill with strangers. Lola fixed the clasp of her cloak. "They came for your name, miss," the maid whispered. "Not your heart." Noxx knew that already. Her father wanted her married. These lords wanted her bloodline. She meant to find out which of them could stand beside her without flinching. She descended into the hall. Candles burned low. Count Vladimir waited near the head of the table, her father, cape pooled behind him. Beside him stood Edgar Grimshaw, the head butler, his skull-pinned coat catching the light. "The eligible lords, miss," Edgar murmured. His voice drifted like cold air through a crack. "They wait on your word." The lords watched her with careful eyes. She heard the whispers. Dracula's daughter. The dead woman's child. They feared her before she spoke. So Noxx gave them a reason. She raised one pale hand over the long table. "You fear my family," she said. "Then meet them." The candles guttered. Cold rolled across the floor. From the shadows a wraith rose, hollow-eyed and drifting, its ragged form reaching toward the gathered men. Noxx spoke to it low, in words only the dead understood. The wraith turned its skull toward the lords and moaned. Chairs scraped. A goblet shattered. The lords broke like startled birds. One shoved past another toward the door. A prince tripped on his own cape. Within moments the hall emptied, boots pounding the black stone, voices crying of dark magic. Edgar did not move. Her father's jaw tightened. Noxx lowered her hand, and the wraith sank back into shadow. The hall fell silent. She had driven off every suitor in a single breath. All but one. At the far end of the table, a man stayed seated. He wore black armor marked with skulls, and his hair was pale white and curled close. A dark sword rested against his chair. He had not flinched. He had watched. Now he stood and crossed the empty hall, slow and unafraid. "King Vesper," Edgar announced softly. "Of a kingdom beyond the veil." Vesper stopped before her. His eyes studied the spot where the wraith had been. "The others ran from the dead," he said. "I was raised among them. My father is the reaper himself. My mother screams for souls as they pass." He almost smiled. "You summon the dead. I have never feared them." Noxx's heart struck once, hard. Every lord had fled. This one remained. "Then you are the only guest left," she said. "Then choose me," Vesper answered, "or choose no one." Her father watched them both, and his smile returned. Noxx had cleared the room of every suitor who feared her. Now one suitor stood where many had. Her deadline had not changed, but her choices had narrowed to a single dark king who would not look away.

The hall still smelled of spilled wine. Her father, Count Vladimir, crossed the black stone floor, cape hissing behind him. His crimson eyes shone. "One suitor remains," he said. "That is enough. We will bind the match tonight." He raised a pale hand toward Edgar, the butler. "Fetch the vows." Noxx felt the walls of Nightspire Keep close around her. He meant to seal her future before she could read her own heart. "No," Noxx said. The word cracked across the empty hall. Her father stopped. "You gave me a choice. A choice made in one night is no choice at all." "You drove off the rest," Vladimir said. His fangs flashed. "You chose by chasing them out. Only Vesper stayed. Marry him." Noxx's heart pounded. She wanted true love, not a cage dressed as a wedding. But she had no words left to fight her father's logic. He stepped closer. The cold rolled off him. Then the dark king spoke. "Count." Vesper had not moved from where he stood. Now he set one gloved hand on his sword and faced Vladimir. "I will not take a bride who was herded to the altar. A wraith does not frighten me. Neither does a rushed vow." Vladimir's eyes narrowed. "You would delay your own match?" "I would earn it," Vesper said. He looked at Noxx. His white curls caught the low candlelight. "Give her a year. Let her walk beside me and learn who I am. If she turns away at the end, I will go without complaint." Noxx stared at him. No suitor had offered her time before. They had come for her name. This one offered her a door she could still close. "A year," she said. "And if I choose to leave, you honor it." "I honor it," Vesper answered. "Your choice. Not your father's." Vladimir's jaw worked. For a long moment the hall held its breath. Then he lowered his hand. "A year," he said, bitter. "But the match holds unless she refuses it. Those are my terms." He swept from the hall, cape dragging over the stone. Edgar followed, the vows unread in his hands. The tall doors closed. Noxx and Vesper stood alone among the guttered candles. Her breath came easier now. "Walk with me," Vesper said. "These halls are yours. Show them to me." They walked the dim corridors of the keep. Red light fell through the narrow windows. Noxx told him of her mother's magic. Vesper told her of the reaper who raised him and the halls beyond the veil. He did not flinch at the wraiths carved in the stone. He asked her questions, and he waited for her answers. By the time they reached the great stair, Noxx had not found love. But she had found a year. For the first time, the choice was truly hers.

Morning light fell gray through the keep's high windows. Noxx came down the great stair and found Vesper waiting at the bottom. He held a single white rose. His armor still bore the dark skulls, but his face was softer now. "For you," he said. "I want to see who you truly are. Not the woman who hides behind a wraith." Noxx took the rose. She had tested his nerve. She had not tested his heart, and a year was not long. She knew nothing of him but his courage. "Then come," she said. "I will show you." She led him across the cold grounds to a small garden house. Carved pumpkins crowded its windows, their faces glowing orange in the dim shed. Vines twisted over the old wood. Noxx stepped inside and lifted the largest pumpkin from the floor. "Watch," she said. She set the pumpkin on a bale of straw. She held her palm above it and let her magic rise, the power her mother Morgana had passed to her. Heat gathered in her hand. The straw stirred. It gathered into limbs, a torso, two rough legs. The pumpkin split a wide grin and glowed from within. The straw man stood and turned his carved head toward her. "I am Jack Hollow," the scarecrow said. His voice scraped like dry leaves. He looked at Noxx with firelit eyes. "You made me, so you command me." Then he swung toward Vesper, and his grin widened. "A king in my shed. I could frighten him for you, mistress." Noxx watched Vesper. Another suitor would have drawn steel. Another would have fled. Vesper only studied the burning face before him. "You would not be the first thing from the dark to try," he said. He reached out and touched the straw shoulder, unafraid. "She made you well." Jack Hollow tilted his head. "He does not run," he told Noxx, almost disappointed. "No," Noxx said. "He does not." She felt something shift under her ribs. She had shown Vesper her darkest craft, the thing most men feared in her. He had leaned in instead of away. "Why show me this?" Vesper asked. "Because every other man wanted my name and my blood," Noxx said. "None wanted this. You did." She lowered her hand, and Jack Hollow sank back into straw and a hollow pumpkin. The glow died. Vesper stepped close. "I want all of you," he said. "The wraith. The magic. The woman who holds a rose." Noxx's breath caught. For the first time, she wondered if real feeling could grow before her year ran out. The answer was no longer blank. It was a yes, small and fragile, and it frightened her more than her father ever had. She wanted to trust it. She did not yet know if she could.

Three weeks after the garden house, Vesper found Noxx on the keep's cold steps. His kingdom lay beyond the veil, and it could not rule itself forever. "I must go home," he said. "Come with me. See where I live before your year ends. Judge me by my land, not just my words." Noxx held the white rose he had given her. She wanted to say yes. But leaving meant her father, and her father did not give leave easily. She found him in the hall. Count Vladimir Dracula stood by the window, his crimson eyes fixed on the gray sky. His cape hung still. He had spent a season herding lords to this keep, all to see her wed. He turned when she entered, and his pale face sharpened. "Vesper asks me to travel to his kingdom," Noxx said. "I wish to go." Vladimir studied her. "Beyond the veil. Among the dead." His voice was low and cold. "You would leave my protection." "You wanted me to choose a husband," Noxx said. "I cannot choose a man I have never truly known. Let me see his home." Her father was quiet a long moment. Then something in his face loosened. "You sound like your mother," he said. "Go then”. It was the closest he came to a blessing. Vesper met her in the courtyard. He had brought gifts. A black horse stood saddled in deep purple, its long mane brushed smooth. A small bat clung to his shoulder, dark fur soft, one ear twitching toward Noxx. "The horse is yours," Vesper said. "The bat too. She will guide us through the veil. The dark does not frighten her." Noxx stroked the horse's neck. The bat lifted off and circled her head, then settled on her cloak as if it had always belonged there. For the first time, a gift from a suitor felt like a gift and not a chain. She turned back to her father. Vladimir stood at the top of the steps, straight and still. Noxx climbed to him and held him tightly. He was stone against the world, but his hand rested on her hair for one breath. "Be safe," he said. "I will," she answered. She mounted the black horse. The bat clung close. Vesper rode beside her on his own pale charger, its dark armor bright against the white coat. They passed through the keep's gates and toward the thin place where the veil waited. Noxx did not look back. She was leaving her father's land and her wraith's safety both. For the first time, she rode toward a man of her own choosing, not away from one forced on her. The year still pressed on her. But now the choice felt like hers to make.

Chapter 6

Four days of travel brought them to a thin place in the air. The ground went quiet. Even the bat on Noxx's cloak stopped twitching. Vesper reined his pale charger to a halt and dismounted. He stepped toward a shimmer that hung between two dead trees. The shimmer was a veil, and Noxx felt it pull at her skin like cold water. Vesper raised his gloved hand to the veil and whispered. Noxx could not catch the words. The air split open with a sound like a held breath let go. Beyond it, water stretched flat and black under a gray sky. A great ship stood in that water, its sails dark and still. No wind moved them. No sailors walked the deck. Noxx did not move. Her black horse shifted beneath her, uneasy. She looked past the ship to the far shore. There, pale figures walked among lit windows. Some of them glowed. Some of them did not. She could not tell the living from the dead. Her hands tightened on the reins. This was his home, and she had never seen a land like it. "I want to turn back," she said. Her voice came out small. She hated how small. Vesper led his charger onto the ship's ramp. The horse's hooves rang on the wood. Then he hopped down and walked back to her. He did not pull. He did not promise the land was safe. "I was raised among these people," he said. "The dead here are not cruel. They are only dead." He held up his hand, palm open, the way he had opened the veil. "You frightened every lord in your father's hall. You are not someone who runs." Noxx looked at the open hand. She had chosen to come. She had crossed the veil for a man she picked herself. Running now would unmake that choice. The bat lifted from her shoulder and flew toward the ship, unafraid, as it had always been unafraid of the dark. She dismounted. Her boots touched the strange ground. She took Vesper's hand. It was warm, and that surprised her more than any ghost on the far shore. "If I hate it," she said, "I leave. You take me back." "I take you back," he said. "That was always the bargain." She led her black horse up the ramp behind him. The dark sails caught a wind that came from nowhere. The ship slid forward across the black water. Noxx stood at the rail and watched the veil close behind her. The pale figures on the shore grew clearer. One of them raised a hand in greeting, and Noxx, after a breath, raised hers back. She was in his kingdom now. There was no veil left to run through.

Chapter 7

The ship touched the glowing shore. A castle rose above the water, its spires tangled in thick black roots. On the stone steps, a family waited for them. Vesper took her hand and climbed toward them. His mother stood first, her white hair falling long past her shoulders. Beside her stood a girl, perhaps fifteen, with white hair in a neat braid and a gown as pale as frost. Behind them loomed a hooded figure in a ragged black robe, a scythe resting in one bone-thin hand. "My mother, Moira," Vesper said. "My sister, Lillith. And my father." He nodded to the hooded shape. "Mortis Grimm." Noxx bowed her head. Moira studied her with pale, hollow eyes. "You crossed the veil for him," the banshee said. Her voice carried an echo, as if two people spoke at once. "Few of the living would." She did not smile, but she did not frown either. Lillith stepped forward and touched Noxx's sleeve with cold fingers. "Your gown is beautiful," the girl whispered. The reaper said nothing. He only tilted his hood, and Noxx felt the weight of eyes she could not see. A bell rang somewhere deep in the castle. Vesper's shoulders dropped. "The throne calls," he said. "My people gather at dusk. I must hear them alone. It is the law here." He turned to Noxx. "I cannot take you in. I am sorry." Noxx watched him go. The great doors swallowed him. His family drifted back inside, and she stood alone on the steps with her bat on her cloak. The gray sky held no sun to mark the time. She had no book, no task, no way to fill the empty hours. She felt the old smallness creep back. Then Lillith reappeared at the door. "You don't have to wait like a statue," the girl said. She held out her pale hand. "Come. I'll show you the garden." Noxx hesitated, then followed. The garden grew behind the castle, black roses blooming under cold light. Moira waited there among the thorns. "My son chose well," the banshee said. She handed Noxx a pair of shears. "Cut one. The dead cannot, but the living can." Noxx cut a single black rose. It did not wilt in her hand. Lillith laughed, and the sound was warm, not ghostly. For the first time since crossing the veil, Noxx forgot to be afraid. She spoke with them of HallowMere, of her magic, of Vesper. The hours did not drag. They passed like water. When the doors opened at last, Vesper found her laughing in the garden with his mother and sister. He stopped and stared. Noxx met his eyes and held up the black rose. She had not waited for him. She had found her own place in his home.
