Chapter 1

Oliver Hayes had opened his door to strangers all his life, but never to one bleeding on his step. The man lay across the porch of the village inn, one hand pressed to a wound in his side. Dark blood soaked the wood. Oliver knelt beside him and lifted his head. He had always dreamed of building a place in Moonfell where the wounded and the outcast found shelter. Tonight that dream had a body, and the body was dying. He dragged the man inside and laid him by the hearth. He pressed a folded cloth to the wound. It soaked through in minutes. Oliver had bread and blankets and a kind heart. He had no medicine and no healing skill. He counted the man's breaths. They came slower each time. "Stay," Oliver said. "Please stay." The man's eyes rolled white. Oliver understood then that comfort was not enough. Someone in Moonfell could save this stranger. He knew of only one. He wrapped the wound tight, grabbed his lantern, and ran into the dark. He crossed the village to the tall stone tower that rose above every roof. Colored light glowed in its high windows. He pounded on the door until his knuckles split. The door opened. On the threshold stood a small figure in a green robe stitched with leaves. Twigs and tiny flowers grew tangled in their hair. A raccoon clung to their shoulder and blinked at the lantern. This was Rowan Oakwhisper, the forest druid, the one hand in Moonfell that could mend what a blade had torn. Oliver had never spoken to them, only heard the whispers about the strange healer who lived among the arcane experiments. "A man is dying at my hearth," Oliver said. His voice shook. "I can't stop the bleeding. Please." Rowan studied his face. They looked at the blood on his hands, not his eyes. "You carried him already," they said. "Good. Blood is a river. We must dam it before dawn." They turned, snatched a leather satchel from a hook, and stepped past him into the night. The raccoon rode their shoulder like a passenger who had done this before. They ran back together. Inside, Rowan dropped beside the man and tore the cloth away. Their green hands moved fast, packing the wound with crushed leaves, pressing, binding. They chewed something and spat it into the cut. Oliver held the lantern and did whatever they asked. Hours passed. The fire burned low. Near dawn the man's breathing steadied. Rowan sat back and wiped their hands on the floor. "He lives," they said. "But he did not fall by accident. Look." They lifted the man's torn shirt. A brand marked his shoulder, a shape Oliver did not know. "Men who carry this are hunted. Whoever cut him will come looking. You opened your door to trouble, Oliver Hayes." Oliver looked at the sleeping stranger. He had saved one life. Now he had to protect it.

Chapter 2

The stranger slept by the hearth. Oliver sat near him through the morning, watching the brand on his shoulder. He did not know the mark. He did not know who had cut the man or why. Until he learned that, any knock at the door could be a friend or a killer. He could not tell them apart. So he waited, and dreaded every sound in the lane. Rowan Oakwhisper returned at noon with fresh leaves. The small druid set them by the fire and crouched to check the wound. The raccoon slid off their shoulder and sniffed the man's boots. Oliver trusted Rowan now. Together they had kept this stranger alive all night. "I don't know who did this," Oliver said. "If they come, I won't know to hide him or welcome them." Rowan touched the brand again. Their face went still. "I've seen this shape before," they said. "Not on a man. On a tree." They led Oliver out of the inn and through the woods. Oliver carried the lantern though it was day. Rowan walked fast on bare feet, pushing branches aside. At last they reached a clearing. A great willow stood there, its leaves a shimmering pink, its branches trailing to the grass. Sparks of light drifted through them. Rowan parted the pink branches and pointed at the trunk. The same mark was carved deep into the bark. Old sap had dried black inside the lines. "The hunters mark this tree," Rowan said. "They meet here. They cut their quarry, then burn the same shape into the skin. A trophy. A claim." They traced the carving. "I've watched them gather under these branches. They come from the north road. They wear gray. They carry curved knives." Oliver stared at the mark. His fear had a shape now. He knew the sign. He knew the road. He knew the color and the blades. The faceless danger had become a thing he could watch for. "Then I can tell them," he said. "If a man in gray comes to my door, I turn him away. Anyone else, I can let in." Rowan plucked a sprig of silvery leaves from a low plant near the roots. They pressed it into Oliver's hand. "Chew this if your heart races," they said. "It steadies the nerve. You will need steady nerves." They walked back together. Oliver felt lighter and heavier at once. He knew his enemy now. But knowing meant they were real, and they were coming. That evening, Oliver stood at the window of the inn. A rider crossed the far end of the lane. The man wore gray. He rode slow, scanning each doorway. A curved knife hung at his hip. Oliver's hand tightened on the silver sprig. The hunters had found the road to Moonfell. Now he had to decide what a man of shelter did when the hunter reached his step.
