Chapter 1

Ophelia counted seven towns in ten years. She sat in the passenger seat, boots on the dashboard, and watched the eighth roll past the window. Her father had promised this one was different. She wanted to believe him. "I'm sixteen, Dad," she'd told him last week. "I need friends I can keep. A home." He'd only nodded. Now the car slowed, and she gripped her leather jacket tighter. The truck stopped in front of a stone house. Ivy climbed the walls. Tall arched windows caught the gray light. Dark gables rose against the sky. A garden spilled over the path, wild and green. Ophelia leaned forward. This wasn't a rental. This was the kind of house people stayed in. "Well?" Connor asked. He killed the engine and rubbed his scruffy beard. Gray threaded through his black hair. He looked tired, but his green eyes were hopeful. "This is it. If you want it." "You mean we're staying? For good?" "For good," he said. "I signed a five-year contract for the new job. No more packing boxes." She threw her arms around him. He laughed and held her tight. For a second she felt the years of moving lift off her shoulders. Then she pulled back and studied the house again. Something tugged at her, like she'd stood on this path before. They carried boxes to the door. Ophelia's box slipped. It burst open on the stone step. Books and old photos scattered across the ground. She knelt to gather them. One photo landed face up. She picked it up. A woman held two babies, one in each arm. The woman had long black hair, half up and half down. Her eyes were pale green, the exact shade as Ophelia's own. Ophelia had never seen her before but she felt drawn to her. She had never once asked about a mother. It had always been her and Dad. Just them. "Dad." Her voice came out small. She held up the photo. "Who is this?" Connor turned. The box in his hands hit the step. His face went white. He crossed the path fast and took the photo from her fingers. His hand shook. "Where did you find that?" he asked. "It was in this box." Ophelia stood. Her heart pounded. " For a long moment he said nothing. The wind moved the ivy. Somewhere a bird called. "Just an old friend no need to fuss over it.” Connor said quietly. He looked at the photo. “I must have taken it by mistake.” Ophelia's mouth curved and her eyes studied the photo. "If you say so dad.” Connor quickly grabbed the photo and shoved it into a box. He acted like nothing happened. “Let’s go see this house.” He said smiling.

Ophelia woke in her new room and looked at the stack of boxes by the wall. For the first time, she didn't feel like a guest. She pulled the first box open and set her books on the shelf. Her clothes went in the closet. Her photos leaned along the windowsill. Each thing she placed made the room hers. She lined up her boots by the door and smiled. This was a room she could keep. A home she could bring friends to. Downstairs, a pan sizzled. She followed the smell to the kitchen. Connor stood at the stove, flipping eggs, his sleeves pushed up. Gray showed in his black hair. He hummed while he worked, which he never did in the old towns. He slid two eggs onto a plate and set it at the table. "Sit," he said. "You need a real breakfast today." Ophelia sat and picked up her fork. "You're up early." "First day at the new job." He rubbed his beard. "And your first day too." He set orange juice beside her plate. "School starts this morning. Whispering Hollows High. You ready?" Her fork stopped halfway to her mouth. She had unpacked all night, imagining friends. But the real test was the school, not the boxes. Her stomach tightened. Seven schools in ten years. She'd learned to be new and forgotten fast. "What if it's like the others?" she asked. Connor pulled out the chair across from her. He looked at her steady. "It won't be. We're staying this time. You start today, and you keep them." He tapped the table. "You don't have to leave anyone behind now." Ophelia ate her eggs and thought about that. In the old towns she never let herself care. Caring hurt when the truck packed up again. But the boxes were empty upstairs. Her books were on shelves that weren't going anywhere. "Okay," she said. She stood and grabbed her leather jacket off the chair. "I'm going." Connor blinked. "Right now? Class isn't for an hour." "I want to walk it," she said. "I want to see it before everyone else fills it up." He studied her, then nodded. "Look at you. Deciding to stay before I even finished my coffee." He handed her a set of keys off the counter. "House key. Yours now." She closed her hand around it. The metal was cold and real. A key to a house that stayed. She pushed it into her jacket pocket. At the door she stopped. "Dad. I'm going to make real friends here." "I know you will," he said. Ophelia stepped out into the cool morning. The garden hung heavy with green. She looked back once at the stone house with its steep gables and arched windows. Her home. Then she turned toward the school and started walking, key in her pocket, ready to be new one last time.

Chapter 3

The walk took Ophelia past quiet gardens and shuttered shops. Then the school rose up ahead, brick and wide, with tall windows and a sign that read Whispering Hollows High. She stopped at the bottom of the steps. Cars pulled in behind her. Voices grew loud as students climbed toward the doors. She knew none of them. Her key pressed cold against her leg. Eighth school. Same first-day dread. She made herself take the first step. Her boot caught the edge. She stumbled and her bag slipped off her shoulder. Books scattered down the concrete. Papers fanned out under passing feet. Nobody stopped. A few students stepped over her things and kept walking. Ophelia dropped to her knees and grabbed for her books. Her face burned. This was how it always started. New girl on the ground while everyone watched. "Hey, they're animals in the morning. Don't take it personal." A girl crouched beside her. Red hair, braided to one side. She wore a leather jacket like Ophelia's, and brown boots scuffed at the toe. She caught a loose paper before the wind took it. Her pale brown eyes flicked up with an easy grin. She didn't ask if Ophelia needed help. She just started stacking books. "I'm Riley," she said. She handed over the stack. "You're new. I'd remember that jacket and it’s nice to see someone with style." "Ophelia." She took the books and stood. Her knees stung. "Thanks. Most people just walk over you." "Most people are half asleep." Riley slung her own bag higher. "First day?" Ophelia nodded. She waited for the polite goodbye. In the old towns, help ended at the door. People were kind once, then forgot her by lunch. But Riley tilted her head toward the entrance. "Come on. I'll show you where the office is. They'll want to hand you a schedule and lose you in the halls." She started up the steps, then looked back. "Well? You coming, or you gonna study the sidewalk?" Ophelia laughed. It came out real, surprised. She climbed after her. Inside, Riley walked fast and talked faster. She pointed at a broken water fountain, a hallway that flooded when it rained, a teacher to avoid. She waved at a few people, but she stayed at Ophelia's side. At the office door she stopped. "They'll take a minute," Riley said. "I've got history down that hall. What's your first class?" Ophelia checked the paper. "History." Riley grinned wider. "See? The school likes you already." She pulled out her phone. "Give me your number. So you don't eat lunch alone like a sad movie." Ophelia typed it in. Her hands felt light. She had a friend before the first bell rang. A real one, in a town that stayed.
