Chapter 1

Ophelia Shadowmere had waited six days for the monster to show its shape. She knelt on the porch of her Victorian cabin, black paper pinned to a board, scissors warm in her hand. She wanted one honest portrait of the thing that crossed the lake at dusk. Not a painting. Paintings let you lie. Scissors only cut away what the light does not touch. She needed the creature to rise, catch the low sun, and throw a clean shadow she could trace. So she listened to the frogs. They sang every night from the shallow tide pool below the porch, where red and gold leaves spun on dark water. The sound steadied her. One fat pumpkin-shaped frog sat on a lily pad near her feet, puffing its throat. As long as the frogs sang, she knew the lake was ordinary. She watched the waterfall at the far shore drop leaves into the current and waited. Then the frogs stopped. All of them, at once. The tide pool went silent. The pumpkin frog froze mid-croak and slid under the water. That silence was the thing Ophelia feared most, worse than any shadow. It meant the creature was coming. It rose beyond the black willow that leaned over the water. A long serpent neck lifted from the lake, slick and dark, dripping. The low sun struck it from behind. Its shadow stretched across the leaves and landed clean on her board. This was the moment. The exact silhouette she had chased all week lay flat in front of her, waiting to be cut. She set the blade to the paper. Her hand shook. The silence pressed on her ears. No frogs. No wind. Only the shape growing larger as the creature leaned toward shore. Ophelia told herself to cut the neck first, then the head, the way she always worked. But the stillness crawled up her arms. The shadow seemed to reach for her across the water. Her fingers jerked. The scissors bit the wrong line. They sheared straight through the creature's head. She gasped and pulled back. On the board, a headless black shape slumped where the monster should have been. The neck ended in a torn, ugly edge. She had ruined it. Six days of waiting, cut away in one shaking second. Out on the lake, the creature sank. The dark neck folded under the surface and was gone. Water closed over it without a sound. Then the frogs began to sing again. The pumpkin frog bobbed back up onto its lily pad and puffed its throat, as if nothing had happened. Ophelia stared at the headless silhouette in her lap. She had captured the creature's shape at last, but she had killed it with her own fear. A portrait with no head was no portrait. It was proof she had failed. She set down the scissors and understood the real problem now. The monster she could wait for. Her shaking hands she could not.
