Chapter 1

Phoenix Blackwood came to Northern End to charm a woman who would not smile at him. He heard about her from a trader two towns back. One woman in the whole village, the man said, immune to a handsome face. Phoenix took that as a challenge. He rode north with a grin and no coat thick enough for the mountains. That grin froze on his face when the storm hit. Snow came sideways and buried the road. His horse balked, then bolted, and left him alone in white. Phoenix could not see ten feet. His fingers stopped bending. He knew the cold. It was patient, and it was winning. He had planned to arrive warm and confident. Now he only wanted to live long enough to meet anyone at all. He walked because stopping meant dying. He kept the wind at his back and counted his steps to stay awake. At three hundred he lost the number. His legs felt like someone else's. Then, through the churning snow, he saw a soft yellow glow. He stumbled toward it. A cottage stood in a clearing. Its walls were warm wood laced with frost, and the windows burned gold from within. Icicles hung from the eaves like teeth. Phoenix did not care how strange it looked. He cared that light meant fire. He climbed the low steps and pounded on the door. His fist barely made a sound. "Please," he croaked. "I'm freezing." No answer came. He pounded again, harder, and heard nothing but wind. His knees buckled. He pressed his shoulder to the door and shoved. It swung open. The cottage was empty. A fire snapped in the hearth, low but alive. A kettle sat beside it. A blanket lay folded on a chair, as if someone had left moments ago. Phoenix fell inside and kicked the door shut against the storm. He crawled to the fire. Warmth crept into his hands and stung like needles. He fed the flames two logs from the stack and wrapped himself in the blanket. Slowly, his shivering eased. He was alive. He laughed once, weak and surprised. Then he saw the small things. A woman's gray shawl on a hook. A single cup by the kettle, still faintly warm. Boots by the door, too small for a man. Someone lived here. Someone had walked out into that storm, and had not come back. Phoenix looked from the boots to the door. The person who owned this cottage was out in the white, in the same cold that nearly killed him. If she died out there, her home had saved a stranger and lost her. He was warm now. He was safe. And he could not stay that way. He pulled the blanket tight, forced his stiff legs under him, and stood. Then he opened the door and stepped back into the storm to find her.

The storm swallowed Phoenix the moment he left the cottage. He pulled the blanket over his head and squinted for tracks. Faint prints marked the snow, small boots pointing away from the door. He followed them fast, before the wind could wipe them clean. The prints faded within twenty steps. Snow filled each one as he watched. Phoenix crouched and pressed his fingers into the last clear mark. It pointed uphill, toward a ridge he could barely see. He guessed at her path and pushed on. The wind fought him. His guess felt thin, and the white gave him nothing to check it against. He climbed until his legs shook. Then the storm thinned for a breath, and he saw it. A castle of ice rose from the ridge above him. Spires climbed like frozen spears. The walls glowed blue-white, lit from somewhere deep inside. Icicles the size of doors hung from every arch. Phoenix stopped and stared. He had asked in the village about a woman. No one had spoken of this. A line of footprints led straight to the tall doors. These prints were fresh, sharp, not yet buried. Small boots. Her boots. Relief hit him harder than the cold. His guess had been wrong about the ridge, but the tracks had found their own answer. She had come here. He staggered to the doors and pounded. The ice rang under his fist. "I'm from your cottage," he shouted. "You left the fire burning. I'm freezing out here." The wind tore his words away. He pounded again and pressed his ear to the cold surface. A voice came from inside, flat and near. "Go back the way you came." Phoenix laughed, breathless. A voice meant a person. "I can't. My horse ran. I followed your tracks. I only want to know you made it." He waited. No footsteps. No lock turning. "You followed me into a storm," the voice said. "That was foolish. Men who chase me always think they're brave." So she knew what he was. Word had reached her before he had. Phoenix leaned his shoulder against the door and grinned, though she could not see it. "I'm not chasing you. I'm surviving. There's a difference tonight." The door did not open. But a smaller panel slid back at eye height. Two dark eyes studied him through the gap. They did not soften. They measured him like a problem to solve. "You'll die out there," she said. "I know." The panel stayed open a long moment. Then it slid shut. Phoenix heard a heavy bar lift on the other side. The great doors groaned inward, just wide enough for a man. Warm blue light spilled onto the snow. He had found her. She had let him in. And she had already told him, in five short words, that his smile would earn him nothing here.

Phoenix stepped through the tall doors and the storm cut off behind him. Warm blue light filled a great hall of ice. But warmth was a lie. The floor was ice. The walls were ice. His wet clothes clung to him, and his teeth would not stop knocking. He had found the woman, but he could barely stand. If he did not get dry soon, he would be too weak to say one useful word. The woman watched him from across the hall. She wore a pale blue gown stitched with silver. A thin crown of ice sat in her blond hair. She held herself straight, like someone used to being obeyed. Her blue eyes moved over his shaking body without pity. "You're dripping on my floor," she said. "I'll stop when I stop shaking," Phoenix said. He tried to grin. His mouth would not hold it. "Is there a fire in this place, or only ice?" She did not answer. She turned and walked deeper into the hall. He followed because he had no better plan. His boots slid on the smooth floor. Twice he caught himself against a cold pillar. They passed under an arch into a smaller room. Here stood a huge stone fireplace, broad and dark, out of place among all the ice. No fire burned in it. Logs sat stacked and ready, dusted with frost. "Warm yourself," she said. "If you can." Phoenix knelt at the hearth. His hands shook too hard to strike a spark. He fumbled and dropped the flint twice. Cold had stolen his fingers. He pressed his palms flat and breathed on them and tried again. Nothing caught. He looked up. "I can't feel my hands. I need help. Not charm. Help." Something shifted in her face. Not warmth. Surprise, maybe, that he had asked plainly instead of smiling. She crossed to the hearth and knelt beside him. She took the flint from his frozen fingers. She struck it once. A spark jumped. She struck again, close and sure, and the dry kindling caught. Flame climbed into the stacked logs. Heat rolled out and touched his face. Phoenix leaned toward the fire and shook harder as his body woke. He pulled off his soaked coat and spread it near the flames. Slowly the shaking eased. His fingers began to sting, which meant they were alive. "Thank you," he said. He meant it, and it came out flat and true. She rose and stepped back from the light. "I am Elara Wintermere," she said. "You may dry yourself. Then you will tell me why you truly climbed my ridge. And do not lie. I have heard every lie a man can tell." The fire held now. Phoenix would live. He was warm, and he had her name, and she had knelt in the ashes to save him. But she wanted the truth, and the truth was that he had come to win her.
